About this course
What better way to bring out your child’s love of literacy by combining it with their favourite game – Minecraft! In Book Builders, students will choose a book to study each session. In our shared Minecraft world, Storyland, they will be challenged to summarize the story by creating at least three key scenes from the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Students will hone their own writing skills by creating books or videos hosted within Minecraft to connect their scenes together. At the end of class, students will be able to share their creations with their fellow students. Maybe they’ll even return next term with a new favourite story to share!
What you’ll learn
By the end of this course, students will....
Learn skills to summarize and identify key points of narrative works of their choice;
Use art, design, and engineering skills to create these scenes on a large scale and bring them to life for fellow students;
Refine their own writing and communication skills to summarize and communicate narrative elements connecting their key scenes;
Identify and reflect on the importance of narrative elements including plot, character, setting, theme, genre, and mood.
Students will be provided with all course material during each lesson, as well as their own personal section in our Class Notebook, which they are strongly encouraged to use for planning and reflection.
Each student should come prepared with a notepad and pen, as well as a growth mindset!
Students are encouraged to have their own testing worlds to test their designs in between sessions on the group server, and to watch and learn from experts to enhance their own skills in many different aspects of design and engineering.
