Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is all around us; in our phones, in our cars, on our computers and, slowly, even in our bodies. A.I, and the underlying mechanics behind A.I, is one of the most important things for the students of tomorrow to learn today, and in this short program we will tackle the concept of A.I in our world today, A.I bias and the simple mathematical methods A.I uses to gimmick humanity. Lastly, students will get hands on experience building a simple, Chatbot A.I of their own; will it pass the Turing test? Find out!

Course summary: How does a computer recognize an image? Facial recognition, a technology that was once a topic of high-tech and science fiction - is slowly becoming prevalent in our world today. We use facial recognition in our phones, on our computers and, unknowingly, in public spaces every day. In this course, students will learn about the uses of facial recognition, the ethical considerations for the future of facial recognition and - through a comprehensive project - the basic methods computers use to “see” the world around us.

Class 1: Introduction to Image Recognition

Today, we begin our exploration of image recognition in its form as an extension of the world of Artificial Intelligence: What does it mean? How does it work? Why is it important?

Project: We refresh our knowledge of python and set up our workspace for the final project. We learn about the OpenCV library and how it will help us create our facial recognition bot.

Class 2: Image Recognition in humans

The human brain is the most advanced pattern-recognition system in the known universe: understanding how it works is critical to the our current and growing understanding of image recognition and A.I. So, how does the human brain process images? How do we learn the differences between things? It’s a process that comes so naturally to us that we rarely take a moment to examine it, but in this class, we’ll take a “peek under the hood” of the human mind.

Project: We’ll begin building the datasets we’ll need to construct our image recognition bot. This can take a long time, but we’ll make it fun!

Class 3: Facial recognition/Algorithmic Bias

A.I is taking our world over and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. It becomes more and more important to ask ourselves; is A.I safe? Is it fair? Is it ethical? Today we tackle the consequences and considerations of Facial Recognition and A.I in society.

Project: We begin adding code to our project, teaching our bot how to differentiate between different images and faces.

Class 4: Image Recognizer!

In our final class, we review the things we’ve learned, play quiz games to test our knowledge and spend some intensive time perfecting our Image Recognition project.

End-of-week Project:  By the end of the 4-class series, our students will have built an image recognition machine that will be able to differential between images of their choosing.

Character Development: This program helps build the following traits

  • Curiosity: Love of learning. Intellectual engagement. Enthusiasm for experiencing the world. Proclivity to develop passions and interests.
  • Independence: Ability and willingness to do things on one’s own. Self-initiative, self-motivation, self-care. Decisiveness.
