Director's Message

principal

Sarah Stubbs, President and Founder of Life Gears Academy
Bachelor of Science (Physics, Math, and Studio Arts), Bachelor of Education (I/S Math and Visual Arts)

With 4 years of experience running a STEM outreach organization, she is excited to continue to do what she loves with the freedom of starting this new organization.

Grew up in Aurora, ON and has lived in Guelph, ON since 2010.

Sarah's favourite part about teaching/ training is building confidence and excitement in others and being a part of that moment when someone realizes their potential.

Started by a young teacher who has a passion for empowering and educating people, Life Gears Academy was developed as a way of providing education in areas that she felt she couldn't teach in the classroom. As important as the school system is, some students still have gaps in their learning and development which can sometimes lead to a future of frustration and lost hope. This teacher believes that every individual has potential to achieve greatness and find their value so she started Life Gears Academy as a platform for individuals to launch off of.

Why a focus on STEM? With youth finding their strengths and exploring their interests, a lot of youth crave new environments to dig deep into STEM in ways that can sometimes be limited in the classroom. STEM is a huge contributor to advancements in society and that is why we believe that it is important to expose youth to various topics in STEM in an attempt to inspire them to make a difference in these fields.

Life Gears Academy has Reached Their First 150 kids!

Since beginning programming in December 2017, Life Gears Academy has been busy running programs and bringing activities to the community in various ways.

Activities were brought to community events such as an Autism Awareness Event, Family Literacy Day, How-to-Event, Guelph Neighbourhood Support Group, and Helloyoyo Camp Expo. At these events we would present various building and design challenges that would keep kids busy for hours and even get some adults wanting to take on the challenge. It was fascinating to see what different ages and abilities could bring to the table. Contact us if you would like us to be at your next event.

We have also been busy running Engineering workshops for the Library as well as all-girl groups such as Girl Guides and Indigo Girls. With workshops focusing on teamwork, communication, problem solving, and patience, it was great to see these kids apply the life skills that Engineers and Scientists use in everyday life.

Our March Break camp and after-school programs were a great success! Our March Break camp was held at the Boardroom Cafe in downtown Guelph which means we had access to over 500 board games and we sure used them. This week was packed with STEM activities as well as various board games including Crokinole, Monopoly, and Carcassonne. It was great to see campers teaching other campers how to play their favourite games. Our first round of after-school programs were held at a school in Guelph in partnership with a Neighbourhood Group and included STEM Team and Environmental Supporters.

This week we are starting 5 after-school programs, 2 run through the City of Guelph, 1 through a Neighbourhood group, and 2 with the same location as before. These clubs include Girl STEMpowerment, Girls Movement, Robotics, STEM Team, and Discovery and Design all run in Guelph. Stay tuned for our Conflict Management for Girls club running in Aurora.

Looking forward to learning and playing with hundreds of more youth to come. To find out what we're up to, email us at [email protected] to join our email list.
