Student Success Story: Ace Photography Student Victoria Ferguson

She takes her photography seriously, and that’s why Victoria Ferguson spent part of last June taking our photography course.

A 13-year-old Texan from Fort Davis, she attended one of DMA’s tech camps at UT Austin, in the heart of the Lone Star state.

Her Mom updated us on what Victoria’s been up to lately. “She is keeping up with her photography, and in fact showed some work at our local Art Walk festival this fall, with excellent results,” she told us. “She got wonderful feedback from professionals, and sold quite a few pieces.” Bottom line: Victoria’s now rocking it as a pro artist!

Check out what she told us about her camp experience:

Victoria, what did you actually create at DMA tech camp?
A portfolio of my best works. I found that I have an aptitude for macro-photography, and lean toward brightly colored nature photos. Photos from my portfolio from the camp were displayed at the 2016 Art Walk in Alpine, Texas, where my installation was called “Nature in Hues.”

How exactly did it make you feel when you completed your final project?
I was exhilarated when my portfolio was completed. I was so proud of my work and my photos.

So what do you think were the most fun things about attending DMA tech camp?
I loved getting to go on “missions” around the campus to find different photo opportunities. Once we had to make a story with just photos. It was also fun to spend time with the other overnight campers after classes. We had water-balloon fights, a volleyball tournament, and tons of foosball games.

That sounds like big fun. Did you make friends at DMA camp this summer?
Oh yes, I made eight or nine friends, many of which I’m still in contact with and hope to see again at another DMA Academy camp.

Do you think you’ll use what you learned at DMA back at your regular school?
Most definitely! I am in the local photography club, and hope to continue taking photography classes throughout high school. It helps to have previous knowledge and some idea of what you’re doing, which gives me a leg up on the other students.

Would you like to come back to a DMA tech camp next summer?
Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times YES!

Would you suggest DMA tech camps to your best friends and their parents?
Of course! I had a blast!

Were your parents pleased with your DMA experience?
Yes. They were amazed at how much my skills progressed in such a short time. They said seeing my photography allows them to see the world through my eyes.

If you are or you have in your household a kid or teen who enjoys shooting selfies and other pictures, maybe you should consider taking your photography skills to the next level – by learning about it at one of our summer photography camps, where average shooters discover how to advance their skills and improve their picture ideas.

We meet you at your particular skill level, so you don’t need to worry about being unqualified to attend. And courses are held on some of the greatest college and university campuses in the U.S. and Canada.

Summer will be gearing up soon, and that’s when our camps come alive with the creativity of the kids (ages 9-12) and teens (12-18) who come from all over to fantastic tech camp locations to get the world’s best tech-camp experience…at DMA!
