RCYC offers this well rounded program to give the participants an opportunity to explore all the FUN aspects of sailing that the Club has to offer. The main objective of this program is to emphasize sailing as a lifelong sport. Sessions will be spent sailing an arrangement of different boats (see below), with an emphasis on learning as many different techniques and skills within the sport of sailing. With three to five hours of on water sailing each day, participants will get a chance to take on different positions such as helming, trimming, trapezing, navigating, just to name a few. Practical lessons on land will consist of learning to tie knots, weather theory, health and fitness, and both sailboat racing and recreational trip planning. Groups will be divided by age (10 – 12 and 13 – 16) as well as experience and skill level (beginner – novice and intermediate – advanced), participant size will also be considered for sailors who are under 115lbs (Optimist Sailboat). Two-week long sessions will be offered throughout July and August. In the spring and fall after school and weekend programs will be offered (eight weeks in duration). Participants will work towards obtaining their CAN Sail levels 1 – 4 and also be introduced to the CAN Sail Chutes and Wires program, which teaches trapeze and spinnaker skills. Sailors may also have the opportunity to attend one local regatta per session. Parents of regatta participants are responsible for regatta registration, car pooling, and occasional chaperoning.

Please note that CANSail 3-4 is broken into two 4 week sessions over the month of July and August.

This program will act as a stepping stone into the RCYC Development and Race Teams.
