Intermediate course for kids aged 9-15 is the only program designed to teach children the essential skills necessary to ride their bike for recreation and transportation. Our focus is on safety, but fun is a big part of what we do as well as we believe cycling must be fun or it won't be done.

Pathways and other infrastructure will never go from every front door to every destination, so biking on the road is an essential skill that must be learned in order to effectively utilize the bike for transportation. The Intermediate course offers both theoretical learning and physical training on essentials such as bike maintenance, nutrition, route planning, handling skills, rules of the road and the rights and responsibilities of cyclists. All theory is delivered as part of this course.

Participants will receive printed copies of theory materials or continued access to online material, as well as detailed feedback on the condition of their bike, their skill development and knowledge.

After completing this course, all participants should feel comfortable and confident to determine if their bike is safe to ride, fix a flat tire, share the pathways with other users and ride their bike on residential roads. Parents should feel confident that their child is capable of independently cycling to school, library, friend's homes, nearby stores or nearly anywhere they want to go.

Course outline:

  • Session 1: bike fit, bike check, tools, flat tire repair, safety equipment, bike security, nutrition for cycling, handling skills.
  • Session 2: laws, rules of the road, traffic dynamics, route planning, group riding, first road ride (community).
  • Session 3: second road ride (community), hills, train tracks, bridges.
  • Session 4: third road ride (community), road evaluation, written quiz.

Course structure:

  • Maximum 6 participants with 1 instructor & 1 assistant
  • Minimum age 9 years (no exceptions)
  • Participants must be able to ride a bike without training wheels and provide a properly fitting bike (gears recommended) and helmet each day
  • Participants must provide & carry their own water bottle, snacks and other necessary items
  • All sessions must be attended in full: we cannot accommodate participants for the remainder of the course if any part of a day is missed.
  • Course runs rain or shine.

About the instructor:

Melissa Malejko is the owner and a Certified Cycling Instructor. Certified since 2011, I am currently the only instructor with SCC offering the full range of courses.

I have taught over 300 people how to ride a bike in the last 8 years with the youngest being 4 and the oldest 84. In addition, I have taken over 100 people on the road through courses that I was involved in. I am pursuing upgraded status and am hoping to soon be able to offer the Instructor Training course. My city bike is a Norco Plateau and I also have an older Norco Bigfoot for mountain biking. You'll be able to recognize me because I always wear a zebra helmet cover.

I believe in life-long learning and that there is always something new to learn. My personal goals include: learn how to do a wheelie (on my mountain bike), kick my fear of the balance beam at the Chestermere bike park, attempt/master weave poles on my bike.  I would also like to complete upgraded certification to be able to deliver instructor training. I have completed a MOOC on concussions and the NCCP Let's Ride & Basic Cycling Skills courses. Very recently, I completed ski instructor certification so I can now teach people how to ski in the winter.
