Safer Cycling Calgary offers a range of programs for various ages and abilities. We are the only organization in Alberta to offer this range of educational courses.

One must first learn to ride a bike: we offer First Time (learn to ride) courses for children aged 4-13 and those aged 14 and up as well. It's never too late to learn how to ride: the oldest person who offered their age was 84! Over 180 successful adult participants since 2012, 200 successful child participants since 2015.

The First Time course will teach you the basics of bike and helmet safety, how to perform a bike safety check, learn to balance, steer and pedal. A small group setting - maximum 4 participants per instructor - ensures each participant gets plenty of individual attention while allowing for learning from other participants as well. This single-day, 3 hour course allows for plenty of on-bike learning time as well as breaks to rest and/or engage in alternate activities, including learning about bike security.

All participants will receive detailed feedback on the fit and function of their bike and skills progress as well as information on next steps and how to continue their progress. Successful participants will be eligible for discounts on future courses.

Additional support available, including guidance on bike fit, how to choose a bike, biking as a family, cyclist etiquette and more.

All registrations must go through Safer Cycling Calgary's website. Please see the First Time course page here.

About the instructor:
Melissa Malejko is the owner and a Certified Cycling Instructor. Certified since 2011, I am currently the only instructor with SCC offering the full range of courses.

I have taught over 300 people how to ride a bike in the last 8 years with the youngest being 4 and the oldest 84. In addition, I have taken over 100 people on the road through courses that I was involved in. I am pursuing upgraded status and am hoping to soon be able to offer the Instructor Training course. My city bike is a Norco Plateau and I also have an older Norco Bigfoot for mountain biking. You'll be able to recognize me because I always wear a zebra helmet cover.

I believe in life-long learning and that there is always something new to learn. My personal goals include: learn how to do a wheelie (on my mountain bike), kick my fear of the balance beam at the Chestermere bike park, attempt/master weave poles on my bike.  I would also like to complete upgraded certification to be able to deliver instructor training. I have completed a MOOC on concussions and the NCCP Let's Ride & Basic Cycling Skills courses. Very recently, I completed ski instructor certification so I can now teach people how to ski in the winter.

Character Development: This program helps build the following traits

  • Courage: The older one gets, the bigger the fear and embarrassment of not being able to ride a bike. You can face fears, discover there's no shame in not having learned something and grow your confidence with this course.
  • Physicality: Riding a bike is an excellent form of exercise. Learning to ride a bike can be physically challenging.
