Every private school exists to meet the needs of a specific set of learners, which is something that on the whole differentiates private education from the public system. And in that sense, you can’t find a better example than Applewood. It isn’t the right school for all students, but for a specific set of students—principally ones that require therapeutic support and individual learning programs—it is unequalled. When students arrive at Applewood they find themselves in an environment in which they are at the centre of the program, not somewhere ancillary to that. They also find a staff that is expert in their needs, and can envision their path to success. It’s a great school, and a great story. The ideal student is the one who is struggling elsewhere, and who can benefit from a dedicated, empathetic, specialized environment.
View full reportThe school began its life in 1901 as the Highfield School for Boys, though it has grown, amalgamated, moved, and changed its name a few times since then. All of that is reflected in the physical plan of the school, one that bears no outward signs of the school’s age. The development path included associations and amalgamations between Highfield, Hillcrest, and Strathallan schools and colleges, their names combining to form the one under which it is known today. The school has earned its strong reputation for all the right reasons, namely providing a basis for success in postsecondary school and beyond.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.
Many of our students have experienced frustration and lack of success in the school setting. Some also struggle with peer connections in this setting. We strive to create a program in which our students feel emotionally and practically supported in reaching their highest potential in the school setting. The elementary program focuses academically on the a direct instruction program model and Ontario curriculum. The high school program focuses on direct instruction programming and supported distance education through local community schools and Independent Learning Courses. Applewood Academy for Progressive Learning is structured around 5 key presentational competencies that support successful transition through school and into adulthood: 1. Academics: The student increases his/her academic functioning; 2. Internal Regulation: The student improves emotional and behavioural functioning; 3. Social Presentation: The student matures in social functioning equivalent his/her ability; 4. Safety: The student achieves and maintains a safe presentation; 5. HSC offers enriched academic, art and athletic programs to students 18 months through Grade 12. We are committed to shifting practices and methodologies from a teacher-directed, content-oriented environment to one that is strongly influenced by student inquiry, creativity and innovation. The role of the teacher becomes even more important in the learning process and changes to greater facilitation, coaching and mentoring. Knowing each student’s interests, talents and skills builds an effective learning partnership that will better enable students to reach their full potential. Students learn in a resource-rich, small class environment and are encouraged to seek academic challenges and to take risks in their learning. Our curriculum is designed to foster a love of learning, and to provide a great beginning for our students as they embark on their educational journey. Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.
These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
Applewood provides direct instruction programming until the student achieves Ontario Curriculum grade level in remedial math.
At HSC, our students will be able to connect mathematics to the world around them and confidently use these skills in their everyday life. In elementary grades focus is put on, developing number sense, developing and understanding patterns, and problem solving. Traditionally, teachers of mathematics have relied solely on direct instruction in which teacher deliver knowledge to the students, show them examples followed by a series of practice opportunities. HSC also provides students with more opportunities to discover the joy of mathematics and to have more exposure to hands-on activities and the use of manipulatives. In the Senior School, students are offered both regular and applied mathematics depending on their mathematical ability and learning styles. As part of HSC's Advanced Placement Program, HSC students may take the AP Calculus in their final year. It is our belief that all students should be exposed to challenging problems, such as mathematics contests.

Balanced Literacy
Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.
Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
Applewood uses the direct instruction reading programs. Kindergarten to Grade 2 level teach sounds and sounding out. Grades 3-8 focus on grade level vocabulary, reading fluency and reading comprehension. Students who are not receiving direct instruction are completing programs from the Ontario Curriculum and/or individual academic programs developed to enhance a specific academic skill.
HSC's Early Reading curriculum consists of learning sequencing skills - top to bottom, left to right progression, recognizing child’s own first name, introducing upper and lower case letters and their sounds, discriminating between upper and lower case letters, developing rhyming skills, and organizing thought process to share ideas and stories. By the end of the program, students will be able to read and write competently and comprehensively, will be exposed to a wide variety of literature (both fiction and non-fiction), na d will be encouraged to develop a love for the written word.

Applewood exposes the elementary students to the Ontario Science Curriculum standards through a variety of hands on activities and highly visual presentations. High School level students receive courses through community High School programs and/or academics individually developed to teach and expand academic skills.
At HSC, units of study in the science curriculum provide authenticity, academic rigour, components of meta-cognition, community involvement, process skills and the appropriate technology in addition to content. Pragmatism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes making learning relevant to students’ present-day experience. Assignments tend to centre around projects and tasks rather than argumentative essays; these projects will often have a “real-world” application or relevance. There might be more of a social justice component to a pragmatic program, though that isn’t always the case. Subjects like history and philosophy are still covered/offered, but they play a less prominent role in the overall program than in the case of perennialism. The social sciences (contemporary geography, sociology, psychology, etc), meanwhile, might play a more prominent role in pragmatic programs. The key goals are to make learning progressive and relevant, while teaching students real-life skills and critical thinking.

Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.

In Visual Arts, students create new and original artwork using a variety of media. Effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy through the curriculum. However, this is not a dominant focus.
A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.
Computer are used in the school to enhance learning experiences and/or as a defined accommodation but are not a focus which would distract from the core learning required by our students.
HSC is a BYOD school, allowing students to bring devices that they are comfortable using, and connect to the school’s Wi-Fi networks. Technology use is built into the curriculum through everyday use of software like Firstclass, Google Drive, and the use of Smartboard technology in every classroom. In the Senior School, all grade 9 students are required to take “Exploring Technologies”, where they will be work with a variety of tools, equipment, and software commonly used in industry. If they choose so, they can continue taking courses in HSC’s Technological Education program, including “Communications Technology” (print, web, radio, broadcast media), and “Technological Design” (interior design, architecture, robotics). The Ministry of Education supports and promotes the participation of students in daily physical activity. Consequently, Applewood Academy must ensure that all elementary students, including students with special needs, have a minimum of 20 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity each school day during instructional time. The goal of daily physical activity is to enable all students to improve or maintain their physical fitness and their overall health and wellness, and to enhance their learning opportunities. Daily physical activity may include walking, active games, yoga, dance, aquatics, sports, and fitness and recreational activities (where facilities permit). In addition to daily physical activity Applewood provides Ontario Curriculum based learning.
The HSC Physical Education program offers participants exposure to a variety of physical activities in a co-operative and enjoyable environment. The emphasis is on experiencing fun and fitness through physical activity and on actively participating. Creativity, confidence and general physical fitness are developed through movement exploration and an introduction to basic sports skills. The activities allow practice, repetition, modification, refinement, consolidation and application of physical skills to movement activities. Academic skills are reinforced through the use of games that emphasize active learning. The health units explore healthy active living, growth and development and substance use/abuse with a focus on preparing the students to make informed decisions. In upper years of Senior Schools, students are provided the opportunity to spend a week in Hawaii where they will earn their "personal trainer certification".
Academic
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
Applewood provides programming for Kindergarten students that is focused on developing the foundations of learning in a supported and structured environment. Students are provided direct instruction programming that is suited to individual needs in conjunction with a mental health supported structured environment. Play based and therapeutic play based activities is an integral part of the programming.

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
We tailor the instruction of multiple subjects to meet the individual needs of the students. Cyber learning and technology are used to support and enhance the learning/experience, enticing and encouraging learning that is not well served through traditional educational practices.

Rigorous
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. Applewood engages in regular assessment of it's students, supporting and accommodating those who have learning difficulties. The ongoing attention to a students Academic Care Plan allows the team to adjust a students plan as necessary while measuring goal achievement. AAPL works with students who have difficulty functioning within a regular classroom setting due to behavioural, emotional, social, and psychological problems. These students often have been previously diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, depression, learning disabilities, etc.
Through our admissions process, we endeavour to select students who will be active participants in all aspects of College life.
Given our focus on both treatment and academics, AAPL requires the completion of a detailed application form as well as consent to access and review any previous clinical information related to the student's problems (i.e., school, psychological, medical, psychiatric, etc. reports). This background information, as well as our independent clinical assessment, enables us to develop an individualized treatment and academic plan for the student.
HSC's application process requires you to submit an application form together with an application fee. School reports for the current school year and the final report from the previous two years are also required as supporting documents.
