Every private school exists to meet the needs of a specific set of learners, which is something that on the whole differentiates private education from the public system. And in that sense, you can’t find a better example than Applewood. It isn’t the right school for all students, but for a specific set of students—principally ones that require therapeutic support and individual learning programs—it is unequalled. When students arrive at Applewood they find themselves in an environment in which they are at the centre of the program, not somewhere ancillary to that. They also find a staff that is expert in their needs, and can envision their path to success. It’s a great school, and a great story. The ideal student is the one who is struggling elsewhere, and who can benefit from a dedicated, empathetic, specialized environment.

The dedication of our staff plays a huge role in the success of our students. Located in the diverse city of Toronto, Prestige School prides itself on a student body that reflects the multicultural city of Toronto. Our school boasts international students from all corners of the world, with some of our students speaking several languages. Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

Many of our students have experienced frustration and lack of success in the school setting. Some also struggle with peer connections in this setting. We strive to create a program in which our students feel emotionally and practically supported in reaching their highest potential in the school setting. At Prestige School, we offer an enriched and accelerated curriculum with subjects taught one to two grade levels above the standard curriculum. Our academic program provide students with a great opportunity to experience a multitude of courses and various learning styles and strategies. It challenges each student intellectually, artistically and physically through a rigorous and innovative curriculum and an extensive co-curricular program. Our academic curriculum is academically challenging, with students being taught by teachers who specialize in the content knowledge of each subject. Starting in kindergarten, students have specialists in French, computer science, music, art and drama. Starting in grade 4, students further specialize in science, which includes biology, chemistry and physics.

Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.
These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
Applewood provides direct instruction programming until the student achieves Ontario Curriculum grade level in remedial math.
Prestige School elementary students are taught an advanced curriculum in mathematics. They learn at least a year ahead of publicly funded schools. Younger students learn hands on strategies that will assist them in answering various forms of questions; textbook, worksheets, graphs, surveys, etc. Older students are learning very advanced mathematical strategies and equations. Our high school students are taught by skilled mathematics teachers that ensure students are understanding the concepts in order to receive their credits.
Variety of material are used to support the mathematics program. Each students receives an individual program that is developed by the teacher using several learning tools the meet the students need.
We use various textbooks for elementary and high school. We also use school generated textbooks.
Students are allowed to use calculators only when they have shown they are able to add, subtract, multiply and divide independently as a basic skill.
Younger students are not permitted to use calculators. They are learning various strategies that teach them to do the calculations on their own. Older students are permitted to use calculators since they are performing advanced mathematical equations.
Balanced Literacy
Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.
Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
Applewood uses the direct instruction reading programs. Kindergarten to Grade 2 level teach sounds and sounding out. Grades 3-8 focus on grade level vocabulary, reading fluency and reading comprehension. Students who are not receiving direct instruction are completing programs from the Ontario Curriculum and/or individual academic programs developed to enhance a specific academic skill.
Prestige School follows a phonics intensive steps to reading program which includes guided reading, weekend readers, word family books and more.

Applewood exposes the elementary students to the Ontario Science Curriculum standards through a variety of hands on activities and highly visual presentations. Pragmatism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes making learning relevant to students’ present-day experience. Assignments tend to centre around projects and tasks rather than argumentative essays; these projects will often have a “real-world” application or relevance. There might be more of a social justice component to a pragmatic program, though that isn’t always the case. Subjects like history and philosophy are still covered/offered, but they play a less prominent role in the overall program than in the case of perennialism. The social sciences (contemporary geography, sociology, psychology, etc), meanwhile, might play a more prominent role in pragmatic programs. The key goals are to make learning progressive and relevant, while teaching students real-life skills and critical thinking.

Applewood uses real life, current, and past examples of what students of similar age would be experiencing in other countries in present day as well as what experiences would be relevant to those in other historical periods. In Grades 7 and 8, students are taught history and geography. In history, students are taught to think critically using primary sources, and are tasked with considering the perspectives of those they learn about. Though the history courses focus primarily on Canadian history, students learn about what was going on in other parts of the world at the same time. In geography, students take part in many inquiry-based tasks, project-based learning, and case studies. The grade 7 course focuses on physical geography, while the grade 8 course is centred around human geography.

The Ministry of Education supports and promotes the participation of students in daily physical activity. Consequently, Applewood Academy must ensure that all elementary students, including students with special needs, have a minimum of 20 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity each school day during instructional time. The goal of daily physical activity is to enable all students to improve or maintain their physical fitness and their overall health and wellness, and to enhance their learning opportunities. Daily physical activity may include walking, active games, yoga, dance, aquatics, sports, and fitness and recreational activities (where facilities permit). In addition to daily physical activity Applewood provides Ontario Curriculum based learning.
Our approach aims at helping students develop an understanding of the factors that contribute to healthy development, a sense of personal responsibility for lifelong health, and a respect for their own health in relation to others and the world around them. Our approach focuses on the following three components: active living, movement competence and healthy living. Students actively participate in a wide variety of physical activities while also understanding the responsibility for their safety and safety of others. Student also perform movement skills and learn how to apply movement strategies properly. For the healthy living component, students learn about nutrition and healthy eating.

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
Applewood provides programming for Kindergarten students that is focused on developing the foundations of learning in a supported and structured environment. Students are provided direct instruction programming that is suited to individual needs in conjunction with a mental health supported structured environment. Play based and therapeutic play based activities is an integral part of the programming.
Prestige School's enriched kindergarten program incorporates learning opportunities in the subject strands of mathematics, language, science, social studies, music, French, physical health and education, dance and the visual arts. The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

Applewood engages in regular assessment of it's students, supporting and accommodating those who have learning difficulties. The ongoing attention to a students Academic Care Plan allows the team to adjust a students plan as necessary while measuring goal achievement. AAPL works with students who have difficulty functioning within a regular classroom setting due to behavioural, emotional, social, and psychological problems. These students often have been previously diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, depression, learning disabilities, etc.
We look for students who possess and can represent our three core values: wisdom, courage and integrity.
Given our focus on both treatment and academics, AAPL requires the completion of a detailed application form as well as consent to access and review any previous clinical information related to the student's problems (i.e., school, psychological, medical, psychiatric, etc. reports). This background information, as well as our independent clinical assessment, enables us to develop an individualized treatment and academic plan for the student.

Admission Criteria
On receipt of the application form, students applying to our kindergarten programme will be invited for a class visit. Applicants to the kindergarten programme are encouraged to bring a photograph or story book to generate conversation (please no toys), and to assist with verbal skills assessment.
