    Developmental Priorities

    Intellectual
The goal is to cultivate "academically strong, creative and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions."
    Social
The goal is to cultivate "socially aware and active citizens, motivated to change the world (or their community) for the better."
    Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.

    Curriculum pace

    Student-paced
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
    Accelerated
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Reggio Emilia
Reggio Emilia programs aim to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of “projects”, (as opposed to “activities” or “lessons”). Teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. Projects can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. A high degree of parent involvement is also encouraged, particularly when forming curriculums and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).

    Our Take

    Our Take

    ARROWSMITH SCHOOL

The Arrowsmith School was founded in 1980 by Barbara Arrowsmith-Young to provide support for struggling learners. The school has been an object of interest ever since, due to the concept that Arrowsmith-Young built her program around. "If we look at a lot of special education programs, the majority assume the learner is fixed," she said. "What my program is saying is that we can change the learner so they can learn." While there are many things that set the school apart, that sense of what is possible is prime among them. The Arrowsmith School works closely with students to develop their strengths, address weaknesses, and build academic, social, and vocational competence. That the method works may be evidence of neuroplasticity, and science may yet underscore that. In the meantime, daring to dream as well as creating a supportive, caring, understanding environment can itself provide what many students need in order to succeed, and that's what the Arrowsmith school principally addresses.

    BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

Balmoral Hall is one of those schools that perhaps doesn’t command as significant a profile in the world of private education in Canada, but it should. Established in 1901, it’s seen a few changes along the way, including moves and name changes—it was founded as Havergal College, then later known as Rupert's Land College—as well as amalgamation with the Riverbend School. It’s long been an expression of the civic community, demonstrated by the endowments it’s received through the years. The current campus reflects that; the site was bequeathed to the school by Sir James Aitken, and Aitken house remains in use there today.  More recently, through a significant capital campaign, the school opened Benidickson Centre for Arts & Design. Throughout its life, Balmoral Hall has offered a window onto a wider world, offering innovative programs, and developing its own set of best practices, all of which are in ample evidence today. The boarding program, too, offers an added layer to the student experience, both for day students and those living on site. Instruction is student-centred, hands-on, including a robust internship program to provide real-world experience tailored to students’ interests. Indeed, a primary goal is to allow girls to follow and capitalize on their interests, and the list of alumnae hints at that, given its breadth. Included is senator Patricia Bovey, journalist Ashleigh Banfield, and hockey player Taylor Woods (who, as a member of the Balmoral Hall Blazers, set a number of team records that still stand today). The arts are represented, too, most obviously in Loreena McKennitt and Chantal Kreviazuk, both of whom are alumnae. In so many ways, the school has been doing great work for more than a century.

    Message from school leadership

    Message from school leadership

    Welcome to Arrowsmith School!

Our goal is for our students to become independent, confident, and self-directed learners who are equipped to achieve academic, career, and life success.

Students with learning difficulties and individuals wishing to strengthen their cognitive capacity join Arrowsmith School to engage in a life-changing journey that has the neuroplasticity of the brain and our students’ lifelong success at the forefront of our educational program. The neuroplastic brain, in response to our cognitive exercises, creates and strengthens neuropathways that allow our students to walk the pathway to their preferred future with greater independence and confidence.

At Arrowsmith School, whether attending our Toronto in-person classrooms or our worldly online classrooms, our students engage in a positive school climate that promotes academic success, social connectedness, and overall well-being.  We provide an exemplary personalized cognitive program to students of all ages within a learning environment that includes families as a key part of the journey.

On behalf of the entire Balmoral Hall School community, I'd like to personally thank you for considering our IB World School for girls, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

    About us

Founded in 1901, with an average annual enrolment of 450 students (Child Care to Grade 12), Balmoral Hall School (BH) is dedicated to the education of girls and young women in preparation for university, and subsequently, for professional careers. Throughout our history and throughout recent years, Balmoral Hall School has welcomed students from around the world, to study and to make themselves at home in our residence. We accept female residence students from Grade 6 through to Grade 12.

Balmoral Hall School offers one of the finest educations in Canada. As a traditional university preparatory school, we are dedicated to helping our students prepare for the university of their choice. This focus begins with our Child Care and Nursery program, which is based on the Reggio Emilia approach. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years (Nursery - Grade 5) and Middle Years (Grades 6 to 10) Programmes aim to enrich our ongoing emphasis on rounded, global education and citizenship. For Grades 11 and 12, Balmoral Hall School offers an Advanced Placement (AP) Program which allows students the ability to pursue university-level courses while still in high school.

Our educational philosophy includes a caring and individualized approach incorporated into a structured school setting. Considerable importance is placed on developing each student's maximum potential using small class sizes and the best teaching staff to help us to achieve our goal.

    Our Boarding Program

Approximately 10% of our school population lives in boarding. Our policy is to accept only a limited number of students from each nationality so that each girl can benefit as much as possible from learning and speaking English and from the Balmoral Hall educational experience. International students have come from as far away as Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the United States, Germany, China, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Israel and Saudi Arabia. The remaining students are from all across Canada and of course, our home province, Manitoba.

Interaction between different cultures is a very important aspect of life at Balmoral Hall School and as many Canadian experiences as possible are made available to our students. Arrangements can also be made for students to tour Canada and visit internationally renowned cities as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver or to arrange winter ski holidays in Banff, Alberta or Whistler, British Columbia. Fortunately, Manitoba is located in the middle of Canada and is in close proximity to the rest of Canada and the United States.

We look forward to the opportunity to speak with you further about the excellent opportunities offered here at Balmoral Hall School.

    Sincerely,

    Joanne Kamins
    Head of School

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      ARROWSMITH SCHOOL

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

What the school says about their curriculum

      ARROWSMITH SCHOOL

Arrowsmith School is a privately owned co-educational and non-denominational day school that is dedicated to helping students with specific learning difficulties. Students who come to Arrowsmith School have been struggling in school - some are just starting their schooling but their experience has already shown a pattern of learning problems. Others have been finding school a challenge for years. Each new student is assessed at Arrowsmith School so that we may identify his or her individual learning profile and then design a program of cognitive exercises for that student. Our program has been of benefit for students having difficulty with reading, writing and mathematics, comprehension, logical reasoning, problem solving, visual and auditory memory, non-verbal learning, attention, processing speed and dyslexia. Our goal is for our students to become effective, confident and self-directed learners for life and to enable them to achieve their goals of academic and career success.

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

Our teachers understand how girls learn. They are dedicated to bringing out the best in each girl, by encouraging her strengths and providing support in areas that are more difficult for her. While our programs are demanding and our expectations high, the atmosphere is co-operative and supportive. It is an environment in which every girl feels free to believe in herself, to speak out and take academic risks.

Within this model, students learn how to regulate their learning more easily and become amply aware of their daily performance with verbal and numerical feedback. The small classroom size provides occasions to collaborate with peers, while their virtual learning gives opportunities for autonomy. Students increase their motivational levels and take more ownership of their own learning, as the processes foster critical thinking skills, self-reflection and confidence.

        ARROWSMITH SCHOOL

In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

Each Division receives 50 minutes of Gym every Wednesday. When the weather is nice we utilize the Parks near the school and during periods of inclement weather, we book space across the road at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church. Gym is an opportunity for students to have a period of sustained physical activity and to, most importantly, have a lot of fun.

We promote a balanced program that guides girls to develop not only socially, but also in other areas of learning, encompassing academic, emotional, physical, and cultural needs. In our warm, welcoming facility, we encourage the development of the whole child with a child-centred experience based on inquiry and experiential learning. Nestled in the heart of Winnipeg, our secure campus on the banks of the Assiniboine River features a landscaped, natural playground, a life-sized playhouse, and hundreds of mature trees that provide natural shade in the summer.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      ARROWSMITH SCHOOL

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

    ARROWSMITH SCHOOL

The decision as to whether a student who is experiencing difficulty at school may be suitable for Arrowsmith School can usually be made based on discussion by telephone with parents and often with the students themselves.

Where necessary, we can also review school report cards and results of academic and psychological testing. Our experience has shown that most parents can identify with great accuracy the problems that their child is having at school.

Each student enrolling at Arrowsmith is assessed to determine the student’s learning profile and to plan the student’s program. Information about the assessment procedure is in the Assessment section of our web site.
