It's a big world out there, with lots of big ideas in it, and Bayview Glen prides itself on offering students an introduction to all its breadth and complexity. View full reportThe Maples was founded in 1989 in order to provide a strong core program in the junior and elementary grades, and that remains the draw for parents today. The school is small, with an annual enrollment of 100 students, allowing for a very personal, individual approach to instruction. It was purchased in 2014 by the owner of St. Jude’s and Oakwood, and benefits through the association, including becoming an IB candidate school. Parents are drawn by the strength of the academic program as well as that of the arts offerings, including a robust instrumental music program. Parents are welcome to be involved in the life of the school, and communication between parents and faculty is direct and frequent. The school was founded to provide a welcome alternative to the public offerings in the area, and it’s been happily living up to that mandate for nearly three decades.

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students wishing to study at Bayview Glen are asked to submit a completed application form, along with a copy of their birth certificate, immunization records, a recent school report, a photo and an application fee of $100. Admission to the school is based upon a review of past school reports, an interview or class visit, entrance testing and space availability. The Admissions Office is available to answer your questions, provide you with more information, and arrange for you to visit the school. Clear expectations for behaviour and standards of achievement are specified in The Student and Parent Handbook. Daily communication between home and school is maintained through the student agendas, the teachers’ blogs and phone call communication.
Our admission process helps applicants and their parents become more familiar with Bayview Glen, its programmes and our educational philosophy. You begin by submitting a detailed application form. Then, students will visit the school to experience life in class, and will complete an entrance assessment. Once the admissions process is complete, students are notified in writing each March regarding their application status.
