Bodwell began in 1991 with just six students, and has grown exponentially since then. It’s now one of the largest international boarding schools in the country. Throughout, the school has been developed to support learners arriving in Canada from overseas, including counsellors who can provide guidance on travel and visa requirements, and international credit equivalencies. The atmosphere in many ways in an expression of the surrounding city. Like Vancouver, the school is diverse, positioned to grant a global perspective. Graduates are encouraged to grow a sense of who they are in that wider world, both of the pacific rim and beyond. The ideal student is one preparing for university and, afterward, a professional engagement within an international context.

Supports are varied and vast, though there’s a personal touch as well. When students enroll they enter a setting in which they are truly understood and appreciated; here, they aren’t unique, being called out of the room to engage with supports, but access them around the clock. Life and community skills training is a draw for many, as is the evidence-based attention to regulation and executive functioning. The facility is absolutely up to date, and attention is personal and individualised, empathetic and compassionate. Founder and director Suki Choi is a draw, as well she should be—her passion is clear, as is her ability to work effectively with families, and she naturally draws those of a like mind to the programs and the staff. AIM is the kind of place that can change lives, and it’s proven its ability to do precisely that for more than a decade.

Autism In Mind Children’s Charity (AIM) was founded in 2011 to give children with autism an equal opportunity in life.
It started with just one child. When I first started a daycare business in Markham, I was approached by a family whose son had been on the government waitlist for autism therapy for 4 years. Moved by their situation, I organized a fundraiser. The response from the community and the daycare parents was so generous, I knew we could do even more.
My team of volunteers began fundraising on behalf of other local families, to help their children access professional therapy. We also began organizing free Social Saturdays for children with autism and that's how this all began.
The momentum of these small acts of kindness gathered. Within just a few years, AIM became a Canadian registered charity and one of York Region's leading service providers for children with autism.
This year, we opened our door for AIM Without Limits (AWL) Private School to offer the best quality elementary education program with our wonderful multidisciplinary professionals. AWL is one of a kind private school system in Ontario that offers ABA/OT/SLP/Psychologist service on top of Ontario Curriculum with fun and engaging strength building afterschool programs like coding, music, art and fitness.
Our school project is another beginning of our big dream. With our dedicated staff who share the same value, we will continue to develop programs for children and individuals with autism in our community.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Some private schools offer International Baccalaureate (IB) programming. The "Diploma Programme" is offered to students in the final two years of high school, while the "Primary Years Programme" (ages 3 to 12) and "Middle Years Programme" (ages 11 to 16) serve as preparation for the diploma program.
Reggio Emilia programs are offered by some schools at the preschool and elementary level. The approach aims to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of projects (as opposed to activities or lessons): teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. They can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. The philosophy calls for a high degree of parent involvement as well, particularly when forming curricula and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).
Bodwell's linear system gives students several advantages. Firstly, there are three entrance opportunities every year, in September, January, and July, giving students schedule flexibility. Secondly, the system allows a motivated student to complete one-and-a-half academic grades in each calendar year. This allows students to complete high school faster and begin their university studies sooner. ESL students also have an opportunity to join from November and April in addition to Fall, Spring & July intake.
Our IEP focuses on literacy, math, life skills, emotional regulation/executive functioning, communication, classroom skills. Our curriculum is designed to develop children to be successful not only at school but also outside of school, our community. Unlike traditional curriculum that focuses on academics, we tailor our program for individual needs and skills that are meaningful for each student.

We offer Fine Arts for Grades 8 to 12, with Advanced Placement Visual Art 12 through submission of Art portfolios to the College Board. All Fine Arts courses follow BC Ministry current curriculum focus on core competency and connection to real life. The art teachers use a variety of medium. We are lucky to be on the North Shore with many boutique art galleries and studios with specialties plus the Vancouver Art Gallery and local art destinations that students go. Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
In Ontario, kindergarten follows a play-based learning approach which is proven to be effective for typical children. A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine. | ||||

Our school’s unique learning needs arise from a bigger group of ELL students coming from around the world. Therefore, we are carefully screening out students who might have other special learning needs that we cannot meet. If we discover students who might need assessment and eventually special education services, their parents will be carefully informed of how and where to get them.

We are looking for students who can actively and positively impact on our school student community by giving their best at both academics and student life. Prospective students must demonstrate this in their application, submitted transcripts, references and interview. All new students will start in our Boarding Program. Upon completion of the Boarding Program, students may apply to move to a Bodwell homestay.
