Begun in 1978, Bond has grown to include a wealth of programs, including those beyond the prospectus of the academy. Because of the association with them, the Academy is proximate to a full range of physical resources and a rich athletics program. Boarding supports international students, including a language centre offering ESL classes and tutorial in addition to core curriculum, as well as provisions for foreign credit equivalency. With AP courses and independent study options, the ideal student is one who is preparing for university enrollment.

Bond Academy began its life in 1978 with a different name and a fairly narrow mandate. It intended to be an academically-oriented school, one designed to meet a well-defined constellation of needs. Time has marched on, and Bond has as well. There are still the supports necessary for students who arrive from away, if not more so, but the program intends much more than just giving them the tools they will need to be successful at university and beyond. Instruction makes the most of the international learning experience, but also the students’ experience, addressing a greater social, cultural, and academic diversity. In that Bond has taken the goal of a liberal arts education—to educate responsible citizens, ones with the tools and the postures required for empathetic, productive civic behaviour—and applied it in the service of educating citizens of the world. If the school was once a place for international students to prepare for post-secondary study, today Bond is that and much else, having developed programs and approaches to deliver a robust academic and social experience, from Kindergarten through graduation.
View full reportDurham was founded in 1984 in order to address learners who are at the top of their peer group and require an enriched program in order to reach their potentials. Families are drawn by the small class sizes—they average between 8 and 12 students—as well as the full grade continuum, from preschool through Grade 12. The nursery and primary levels are taught through a Montessori approach, and while it’s not carried through the upper grades, the values are nevertheless shared throughout the school. Students arrive to an academically inflected environment, and a peer group that shares a predilection to achievement. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a close-knit, challenging yet supportive instructional environment.

In addition, our Bond Girls Basketball team continues to grow as they compete in the elite OSBA league. The SSAF sports league also gives a chance for our Girls and Boys teams to compete in a variety of individual and team sports.

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.
Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.

Our small classes and dedicated staff promote both the character and skills development of our students within a kind, caring and nurturing environment. We offer early literacy, arts and physical education programs as well as our strong academic curriculum. Through our preschool Montessori Casa program for students three to six and our enriched curriculum at both the Elementary and Secondary levels, Bond cultivates intellectual curiosity and prepares students to be successful in our global society. Our enhanced grade 6, 7 & 8 French program uses the computer-based "Rosetta Stone" program which teaches language through images, text, sounds and video, to support our regular program. Bond promotes a healthy active lifestyle with daily physical education classes and weekly swimming lessons. Students are encouraged to participate in our extracurricular sports activities both intramural and team sports. Bond recognizes the importance and benefits of a strong foundation in the arts. Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.
These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
We follow the Ontario Curriculum at an enrichment level. Students are given extra help (tutoring one on one) and support if there is a weakness in mathematics. Our students are introduced to phonetic sounds in the Toddler class and this carries through to the Casa 1,2,3 class. At age 3 and 4 our students will recognize their sounds including short vowel. At age 4 our students will be reading short phonetic sentences and completing comprehension worksheets. In Casa 3 our students will recognize all of their phonetic sounds, short vowel, long vowel, diagraphs and they will be progressing through readers and completing the corresponding comprehension worksheets, working at a grade1 level. Each year our students from grade 1 to 8 research a topic to write a speech and they compete and present in our annual speech contest at our school and in the province. Our secondary school teaches English at the Academic level. Our schools purchase Canadian resources that cover penmanship, cursive writing, spelling tests, grammar and literature.

Our students start penmanship at age 3. They start with sandpaper letters and then start simple journal entries. In Casa 2 (age 4) our students focus on penmanship and daily printing as well as simple journals. In Casa 3 the students continue their daily penmanship, journal writing. Casa 3 is introduced to copying from the board and writing simple sentences in preparation for grade 1. The Montessori program also focuses on building words (spelling). Daily penmanship/cursive is a focus for students grades 1 to 8 as well as weekly spelling tests.

Asperger's Syndrome On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour. | ||||
Down syndrome his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics. | ||||

Clinical Depression This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life. | ||||
Clinical anxiety This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror. | ||||
Suicidal thoughts This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life. | ||||
Drug and alcohol abuse This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning. | ||||

Cerebral palsy his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture. | ||||
Muscular dystrophy Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals. | ||||
Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine. | ||||
Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder) This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech. | ||||

We suggest that families come in for a tour and have their child visit at no obligation for a morning or a day. D.E.P.S and Durham Academy students are required to bring in previous report cards. Durham Academy Secondary School students are required to answer simple questions in written form and have an interview with the Principal.
