The Brighton program begins from the understanding that not all students are able to adapt themselves to the curriculum; rather, in order to reach their potentials, they require an academic environment that adapts itself to them. That can take many forms, and Brighton offers the full range, from small, student-centred groups, to a balanced daily schedule, to a staff with the tools and supports—and the time—to really work individually with each of the students. Certainly, that’s something which distinguishes the school within the region, and often is the first point of contact. What families find in the school, however, is both that and whole lot more. Given the size of the school, Glenmore is also able to offer a very rich, diverse range of programming, something that understandably is also very attractive. There is a full program of intramurals, and the breadth of the music program—including options for individual lessons—is something that also distinguishes the school. A mission program at the grade 9 level offers an international experience earlier than in a majority of programs, and can provide a very nice punctuation to a student's experience at Glenmore. The ideal student is one who will thrive within a vibrant, challenging, community-centered learning environment.

From K-Grade 5, students are engaged in physical activity on a daily basis. We have specialized phys ed teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 9.
Academic
Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

Rigorous
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
Teaching of our core subjects in the elementary school is done in small Learning Groups of between three and six students. Brighton School elementary program is designed for students who are experiencing challenges with academics or social skills, our program provides both curriculum-based and remedial programs in all core academics. Brighton's innovative Secondary program is designed to meet the needs of students who would have difficulty meeting the demands of a typical high school program and social environment. We offer Ministry of Education credit courses, pre-credit courses, and an alternative non-credit Transition to Adulthood program, which provides employment preparation and independent living skills.

Parents interested in applying to Brighton School may wish to start the process by attending one of our Open Houses to tour the school, meet the teachers and hear an overview of our program. If that is not possible, parents may call to arrange a personal appointment with the Principal or the Director of Admissions. You may also request an application package be mailed to you, or you can download the appropriate Application package here: The application fee is $150, or $450 for International applications. Once we receive your Application Form with the requested information, including psycho-educational assessments (if available), report cards and other pertinent information, we will set up a student assessment. The assessment takes between one and two hours, depending on the age of the student and the information provided. If there seems to be a reasonable fit between the student and our program, a half-day class visit will be arranged for the student. Following this, the parents will be called to discuss the results of the assessment. We make every effort to expedite the process once the application is received. Our Facility Fee is a one-time, NON-REFUNDABLE fee that applies to all NEW Kindergarten to Grade 9 students.
