Families rightly turn to Brockton for strong academics, and it certainly has that, undergirded by the IB program. But families turn to private school for other reasons as well, prime among them an environment in which students enter a community of peers of a like mind, and who are academically inclined, and Brockton offers that as well. Even more importantly though is an aspect of the school that perhaps parents don’t think to first, though they should, and that’s the opportunity to have authentic experience with a range of endeavor that they wouldn’t otherwise. The community of the Brockton School is close-knit, while the academic and extracurricular programs are broad. No, it’s not always easy to try new things, and the school is cognizant of the barriers to participation, anticipates them, and seeks to provide a sympathetic introduction. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a vibrant, active, supportive yet challenging academic environment.

The school has grown since then to include the upper grades, and housed within modern facilities, with physical expansion completed in 2008. The attention to an intensive curriculum remains, one that seeks to straddle the goals of a traditional liberal arts education with a range of 21st century literacies. While not expressly intended as a gifted program, the ideal student is one who is able to thrive within a traditional, challenging, yet diverse learning environment inclusive of a relatively large student body.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Kuper follows a traditional approach to learning that nurtures the relationship between the teacher and students. In secondary school, grades 7 to 11, students are exposed to a structured six period school day focusing on the importance of self discipline. Learning is not limited to the classroom. These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
The early reading combines both mini word recognition and phonetic blending. Students are exposed to progressively more complex words and sounds. Very simple readers are used to reflect the child's pacing and ability.

These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

Arts education is a requirement at every grade level. This covers a wide range, including music and band, drama, dance, performing arts (Glee), and graphic arts. Focus at all levels is that students must be physically active in order to follow a health life style. Team and individual sports are practised. All instructors are also certified coaches who accompany students in formal sporting activities outside the classroom under the general umbrella of the Greater Montreal Athletics Association. Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

Although social interaction plays an important role in the development of early learners, it is also important to awaken the intellectual curiosity of students through teacher guided activities. Letter and number recognition and mini word reading, are an integral part of the learning process. By the end of the year most students are able to read short basic stories in English. Brockton’s Student Services Team is dedicated to meeting the needs of diverse learners. Within the scope of the school’s programming, Brockton School establishes and maintains support services for those who qualify for and/or have special education needs. Working in partnership with families, the team collaborates with teachers to employ a wide variety of strategies and tools, including technology, differentiation, and other adaptations and accommodations to address student needs. Our mission is to set students up for independence as they optimize their gifts and challenges.
At the elementary level, academic resource is available in order to bring students up to speed in the appropriate discipline. In high school students are expected to satisfy the academic requirements, though students may be given special accommodations in writing formal examinations, including, extra time and writing in isolation.

Specifically, a limited series of accommodations are available, including extra time on formal exams. Focus, remains, however, on students satisfying the school's academic expectations.

Student selection is based on both academic and non-academic considerations. These include but are not limited to: The ‘fit’ of the child and family with the school. The availability of space and class composition at the particular grade level. Character traits such as curiosity, independence, responsibility, self-discipline, and creativity.
Kuper Academy chooses motivated students who are ready for a complete school experience. We expect them to pursue their studies diligently and to participate fully in all aspects of school life. They should be able to express themselves clearly in writing and demonstrate a positive attitude towards learning.

Please note that applications are not considered complete until we receive all supporting documentation, and the non-refundable $300 application fee has been paid.

STEP 3: SCHEDULE ASSESSMENTS
Student applicants are required to participate in an entrance assessment to determine ‘fit’ and evidence of the applicant’s potential for success within our program. Parents will also be invited to meet with a member of our admissions/leadership team for a personal interview.
