The Calgary French & International School (CFIS) is one of the leading independent schools in Canada. View full reportThe purpose of any great private school is to support a segment of the learner population, giving them the attention that they require to be successful and to have their talents recognised and celebrated. By that metric, without a doubt, Edelweiss is a great private school. The approach is evidence based, keyed to a range of personal and academic outcomes, and delivered by faculty members who have direct, clinical experience. The range of exceptionalities that students arrive with are varied, though ultimately the approach is student-centred, working with each to ensure that they feel comfortable and grow and learn. Often, and this is true in the case of Edelweiss, the parameters of the environment are a key element—whatever challenges the students are experiencing, they don’t exist on the periphery of the school community, pulled from classes say for one-on-one with a teaching assistant. Rather they feel central within it, precisely because they are, in fact, central to it. In this environment, they don’t feel exceptional, but an equal part of a shared community that understands them.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. The chief objectives of school athletics are to provide students with opportunities for leadership development whether as an athlete, coach or official. Students follow the Ontario Ministry of Education's Health and Physical Education curriculum. Students participate in physical activities in the classroom, in the gym and outdoors. In addition, students participate in daily physical activities, and weekly yoga and swimming classes that have beneficial effects on both body and mind.

Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
Our emergent curriculum for children starting as early as 19 months, provides individualized learning based on children's interests. Intentional learning stations and activities are influenced by student interest and the development of language, pre-literacy, pre-numeracy, social and emotional skills. A wide variety of projects focus learning strategically on areas such as developing fine and gross motor skills, literacy and numeracy through play.
The Transition Class (JK/SK) maintains a very low, 1:3, adult-student ratio with EA support available at an additional cost. This program is designed for children who are school aged but are not ready to participate in a typical classroom setting or still have ABLLS-R programs to acquire . Students in the Transition Class participate each day in fun educational activities that promote social emotional learning, gross and fine motor development, and language development. Early math and literacy will also be studied. The Transition Class is available as a full or half day program where students spend the remainder of the day working one on one with an IBI therapist.

Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. Asperger's Syndrome On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour. | ||||

Clinical Depression This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life. | ||||
Clinical anxiety This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror. | ||||

Muscular dystrophy Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals. | ||||
Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine. | ||||
Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder) This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech. | ||||

Edelweiss Private Academy caters to students with ASD and/or other exceptionalities, particularly students who are experiencing academic or social difficulties in a traditional school setting. Many of our students have completed or are working on the ABLLS-R program and IBI therapy.
Calgary French & International School is a full French immersion school that prepares children with the tools to learn Spanish and graduate with internationally recognized mastery of French and English.
Most students new to CFIS do not speak French at home with their families. At CFIS, our French immersion learning environment is designed to meet the needs of students who are new to the French language.
Our application process is intended to find a mutually good fit between families, students and the school. Our Admissions team considers each applicant’s academic record, character, and citizenship qualities.

Student Eligibility: No previous experience in French is required for admission to our Early Childhood Division — Junior Preschool, Preschool, Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten — and for Grades 1 to 4 through our Embark transitional immersion program.
Our Elementary and Secondary divisions welcome applicants currently attending a Francophone or French immersion school in all grades. Students entering Grade 5 to Grade 12 must be currently attending a Francophone or French immersion school to be eligible to apply and attend CFIS.
Application Process:
Step 1: Visit CFIS for a tour and information session.

Step 3: Applicants complete an educational assessment (Junior Preschool excluded). Preschool and Junior Kindergarten applicants participate in an assessment with a parent.
Step 4: The Admissions Office offers placement to the applicants' family.
Step 5: The applicants' family confirms enrolment by signing a tuition agreement and paying a deposit.
International Students: CFIS welcomes applications from international families. Families who do not have Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status are considered international. CFIS also requires:

Admission is ongoing throughout the school year. Students are placed according to skill level and grade, while also considering how best to facilitate social growth and development among peers. Parents are encouraged to bring all assessments and documentation to assist staff in determining placement. Students are required to have a baseline assessment done to help determine their appropriate skill level.
