    Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school.     A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
     
    Rigorous
    A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Montessori
    Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

    CENTRAL MONTESSORI SCHOOL – MAPLEHURST CAMPUS

    Since it was founded in 1995, CMS has grown to include five locations in the GTA. The program is founded on the core ideals that Maria Montessori promoted in her work, those of respect, community, purposeful engagement, and self-directed learning. That said, Montessori didn't create her program as a museum piece, but rather as a starting point, and that's a spirit that CMS upholds as well. Dr. Montessori, as has been said, "adjusted and adapted her educational system to better serve children's needs, and well-functioning Montessori classrooms typically share many features reflecting those adjustments." One of which was, of course, a willingness to adjust and adapt. As such, the CMS program includes, as at the Maplehurst location, a computer lab, a library, and a music room. In all, the focus is very clearly on the child, and supporting child development, which is just as it should be.

    VOICE INTEGRATIVE SCHOOL

    Marie Lardino, the founder of VIS, began her teaching career within the public system in Ontario. As such, she witnessed first-hand the impacts that the province-wide reforms begun in 1998—in particular standardized testing—had on her students. Grades, she felt, became a regrettable focus, increasing student stress and anxiety. That was the impetus that lead her to found VIS in 2000. It builds from the strength of having a common curriculum, though presenting it in a more personal, supportive, student-centred environment. To date, the success of the school has been remarkable, gaining the attention of professional educators, and providing an example that many have chosen to emulate. Marie Lardino, now retired, continues to guide the school as its arms-length director, and believes that students learn best in environments where “belonging and safety are acknowledged, practiced, and celebrated.” The academic program is rigorous, though student success is a product of the empowerment that they feel each day when they arrive at school.

    Our campus focusses on the development of the young child.  Our caring and professional staff at the Sheppard Campus provides an enriching environment to enable your child to reach their potential.

    The founder and principal  of VIS, holds a B.A., B.Ed., Ed. Admin. and M.Ed. in curriculum with a focus in integrative education and is currently on sabbatical from her Doctor of Education at the University of Liverpool in order to focus on our school community.

    She taught for the Toronto District School Board for ten years and has qualifications in all primary, junior and intermediate divisions with additional Principal’s Qualifications (Part I).

    Marie has conducted workshops to teachers in the U.S. and Canada with the aim of helping them establish peaceful school environments.  She served as an Adjunct Professor at York University’s Faculty of Education for several years, and has given seminars at three of Toronto’s faculties of education on global and holistic education.  She developed guidelines on the topic of conflict resolution for the Toronto District School Board, and has published curriculum on children’s rights and other materials on global education for Primary Voices K-6 (1990-1994), UNICEF (1995), and for the Institute of Global Education at OISE/UT (1992-2000).

    In addition to her role as the Principal of Voice Integrative School, Marie was a board member for the Children’s Own Media Museum (COMM), and currently serves as a Liaison Administrator for the Faculty of Education/Master of Teaching program at OISE/UT.

    2.   ATTEND AN ORIENTATION - STUDENTS

    You will be contacted with a date for your child to attend a Student Orientation that includes the following:

    • Math and Language Assessment
       

    3.   ENROLLMENT STATUS

    A letter of admission status will be mailed to applicants upon decision.

    To confirm your child's acceptance to VIS, the Tuition Option Form, Refund Policy and Enrollment Agreement are required within one week of acceptance.
