The Dewey Institute is very much an international school in the modern sense, in that it attracts students from across Canada and around the world seeking to move on to university in North America. The student body is defined largely by its diversity—learning with students from around the world can be a galvanizing experience. Interiors are crisp, clean, and with a university feel, which of course is absolutely intentional. The school has designed the spaces so that when students arrive at university, the environment feels familiar. The school is close to larger urban centres—Toronto and Ottawa are within a few hours’ drive—and benefits from the proximity to the internatioal transportation hubs found there. That said, it’s also close to some of the natural environments that the country is famous for, and Algonquin Park is nearby as well. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a dedicated academic environment with peers who share a drive and desire to arrive at the university of their choice, and to thrive while there.
View full reportStanstead’s history is long and varied—it will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2022—apparent in the buildings as well as the traditions that continue at the school today. It was founded in 1872 by the Wesleyan Conference as a co-educational school, though both of those things have fluctuated over the years: it became a property of the Methodist Church, became a boys’ school, became a property of the United Church of Canada, welcomed girls again in 1979, and then ended its denominational affiliation. All of that history is very present and celebrated, and it imparts to students a sense of permanency and of belonging to something greater than themselves. The student population is relatively small, at 200, and the community is very strong and centralized, something the school rightly sees as a strength. The academics, as you’d expect, are very strong, but the culture of the school is a primary draw, especially for families looking at the boarding program. Stanstead accepts both boarding and day students, though the school is structured around boarding and maintains a very global perspective across the curricular areas.

As Stanstead College’s head of school – the first female head of school in the College’s 150-year history – I am filled first with a great sense of responsibility for the task I am taking on.
But I also feel gratitude. Gratitude for those before me who built and sustained this amazing school community. Gratitude for the teachers and support staff who work tirelessly to create such an exceptional atmosphere. Gratitude for the parents who entrust their children to our care. Gratitude for the opportunity to live and work in this safe, beautiful corner of the world.
Finally, I am grateful for the students. I get to work every day in an environment that is teeming with young energy, hope and optimism. True, sometimes that energy is a lot to manage! But the students who come to Stanstead College are so excited to be here. They are excited to learn in small classes and forge relationships with their teachers and peers. While we welcome all students - domestic and international - Dewey offers specific programs which may suit students with certain interests. For the "Youth Scientist Program" : - Students who are interested in AI, robotics, coding, and/or life sciences For the Arts Program: - Students who are passionate about the fine arts (painting, drawing, graphic design, etc.) or music For the English Language Program: - Dewey is a member of Language Canada, and offers General English Program and Academic English programs - General English is for ESL students who are still learning the language - Academic English prepares students, providing them with written skills to help them succeed at the high school/university level including lab reports, business proposals, etc. For the Special Education Program: - Students who qualify for special education, both gifted/enhanced students, as well as students who may require some teaching assistance *This program may involve university students from the Department of Special Education.

Upon an evaluation, the school will issue a letter of acceptance to students who are qualified to study at Dewey for the upcoming school year.

Applicants must complete an online application, submit school reports from their last two years, provide two school references and one personal reference, submit a statement of interest letter, complete our admissions test or English language test and have an interview with a member of our admissions team in person or online.
