View full reportThe Dalton School is a dual-language school, so it doesn't use the language immersion model that most Canadians are familiar with. First off, no prior Mandarin or English proficiency is required to enroll. Further, both languages are given equal weight, unlike in many public school immersion programs where students all share a first language and are all learning the same second language—at The Dalton School, 50% of the day’s instruction is in Mandarin, and 50% in English. The curriculum is balanced in order to allow students to achieve academic proficiency in both languages. So, it’s different, and as such, visiting the school can be, and often is, a striking experience. Most Canadians, truly, have never experienced an academic environment quite like it, with very young children functioning easily, casually in two languages. Both languages naturally open up a range of learning areas—both social and academic—not the least being an exposure to a wider range of culture influence, providing the groundwork for an expanding and empathetic world view. All academics follow an enriched presentation of the Ontario curriculum. Dalton has a very close, community feel, and parents are welcome to be involved in the life of the school. A new home for the school is set to open in 2018, allowing space to further grow the program and the enrollment.

Fieldstone was founded with two goals in mind. The first was to provide a strong foundation of knowledge upon which each student could build as they move into adult life. The second goal was to create a strong sense of self-worth and self-esteem within each student. The curriculum is used as a vehicle for accomplishing both of these goals. Students will grow in knowledge and self-confidence by being constantly challenged to achieve goals that appear to be slightly beyond their reach. Fieldstone students are presented with academic tasks that they may consider too difficult for themselves. Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.
These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
Our math classes are structured such that advanced students can jump a grade (sometimes two) to ensure students are appropriately challenged. Additionally, our Cambridge programme offers progression tests and Checkpoint Examinations as a capstone evaluation ensuring that full mastery is achieved. For an additional challenge our Grade Seven and Eight students can begin preparing Cambridge IGCSE mathematics which is typically written by high school students. Our programme offers limitless challenges for even the most exceptional students in mathematics.
Our math program is innovative and uses a variety of approaches. Using the JUMP Math systematic approach, along with a variety of hands on manipulative materials students develop a strong foundation in basic math skills. Teaching students to understand fundamental operations, along with the memorization of math facts helps students work quickly and accurately through daily math work.
We use a variety of texts and supplementary materials which are dependent on the course. Both Ontario and Cambridge-specific texts can be used in different courses.

Balanced Literacy
Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.
Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
We have a balanced approach to literacy. We use Core Knowledge Language Acquisition for phonics and incorporate "Jolly Phonics" resources as additional learning anchors. Children are given many opportunities to practice working with letters and sounds in order to develop a good initial understanding of how language works. As they progress through the grades, their oral language, including speaking and listening develops. Our children hear good literature, both fiction and non-fiction and read aloud often. They are asked to summarize and retell what they have read and engage in many conversations with peers and teachers.
The Dalton School has developed a very strong reading/literacy program beginning at the JK level in both Mandarin and English. In English, we have developed our reading program around the 5 Pillars of Reading: Phonetic Awareness, Phonemic Understanding, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension and Fluency. In Mandarin, recognition of characters begins at the JK level. We focus on simplified character development and the use of pinyin is introduced at the later SK/Grade 1 level. Guided reading and novel study is done in both languages throughout the elementary grades.

Our science programme provides students with a strong foundation for future studies while providing students with the chance to develop their analytical skills. Our aim is to provide at least one laboratory activity per week to support the theories learned throughout the week. In Cambridge tutorial, practice practical examinations are provided to prepare for practical examinations. Co-curricular activities are offered to our students to apply the theories from the classroom to the real world. Perennialism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes the idea of education being a kind of “conversation” between generations, and so frequently turns to “Great Works” and “Big Ideas” for teaching-content. Perennialist programs approach past works on their own terms; as if they might actually help students understand “today” better. Past works are not viewed as mere historical artifacts, but as gateways to a deeper understanding of the human condition. History (and, by extension, the humanities in general) therefore plays a large role in perennialist curriculums, though social sciences like economics, psychology, and sociology can still be taught. Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.

Our courses focus on enabling students to create and present art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Fieldstone believes that studies of computers and technology are relevant for all our students because they incorporate a broad range of transferable problem-solving skills and techniques, including logical thinking, creative design (our 3D printer is very popular), synthesis, and evaluation. Students live in a technologically-rich world, and courses in this field will provide them with the knowledge and skills to understand the underpinnings of current computer technology and prepare them for emerging technologies of the future.

Fieldstone's approach to teaching Physical Education is to educate students on the importance of active living as a part of a healthy lifestyle. Students are given the skills necessary to participate in a variety of individual and team-based activities. Emphasis is placed on skill development, leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Students of all skill levels are able to participate in activities in a safe environment with positive messages about participation and the benefits of activity.
The Dalton School uses the SPARK Physical Education Curriculum. SPARK (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) is a researched-based, public-health organization dedicated to creating, implementing and evaluating physical education principles that promote lifelong wellness. The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. Students with a clinically-diagnosed learning disability are invited to apply. Our school will review psychological education reports, report cards, and any other reports to assess if our school is the right fit for the student. A 'Buddy Day' (half or full-day visit to our school) and assessments may be required before acceptance is offered. If enrolled, a Student Success Plan (SSP) will be developed to support the student. This plan will outline the students' strengths and needs and will include accommodations and modifications necessary to promote student achievement.

When one of our teachers has a concern about a child's learning, they first meet with our Head of School. Our Head of School will then work with the student both in the classroom and in a one-on-one setting in order to get a better idea of the student's learning needs. The teacher and Head of School will meet with parents to develop a student success plan that outlines individual learning goals and accommodations. If, after the plan has been implemented, it is believed that more support is needed, the school will recommend a psychological education assessment, occupational therapy support, or speech therapy.

The Dalton School accepts children from Jk to grade eight who have an obvious enthusiasm and a love for learning. Our enriched academic curriculum is taught in English and Mandarin, and our students have an openness to the world around them that is not found in those learning a single language. We believe that all young children who are placed in a highly stimulating academic setting and a nurturing, caring environment will thrive regardless of their initial aptitudes however the child and their parents must fully engage in our curriculum to get the most out of it.
We support all families through the application process. In order to apply for our school, we require two years of report cards (not applicable to JK/SK candidates), a completed application form, observation, and an interview. We help your family to have a positive and successful start to your Fieldstone experience.
