View full reportPrivate schools, of course, intend to offer an alternative, and Kendellhurst is a great example of that. The program is founded in an approach to ECE that borrows the best from Montessori and other alternative approaches, yet does it in a very tailored, intentional way in order to best address the needs of the students that attend. It's less about doctrine than meeting the specific needs of student population. There are three locations, though all feel a piece of the communities that they sit within, something that the Streetsville location is a particularly good example of. The educational context is local, small, and integrated with the needs of the families that enroll here. The feel is homey, comfortable, and supportive, and camp sessions allow families to extend that experience into the summer months, providing an opportunity for continuity between school terms. Organic meals and after school programs are included with tuition, something that can provide a welcome support to the daily management of family life.

Fieldstone was founded with two goals in mind. The first was to provide a strong foundation of knowledge upon which each student could build as they move into adult life. Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
These programs have an equal emphasis on receptive and creative learning.
Our courses focus on enabling students to create and present art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Our hands-on approach invites students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques and apply these to their own artistic projects. Reflection is also a key component of art-making. Students use the critical analysis process to critique art works and connect themes to the wider world. They are also encouraged to make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts.

SK to grade 3 students have recorder lessons bi-weekly while students in grades 4 and up may choose guitar, piano or flute. A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.
Fieldstone believes that studies of computers and technology are relevant for all our students because they incorporate a broad range of transferable problem-solving skills and techniques, including logical thinking, creative design (our 3D printer is very popular), synthesis, and evaluation. These courses also teach useful skills in such areas as communication, time management, organization, and teamwork. Students live in a technologically-rich world, and courses in this field will provide them with the knowledge and skills to understand the underpinnings of current computer technology and prepare them for emerging technologies of the future.
All classrooms have 80 inch digital interactive displays allowing a complete and seamless teaching and learning environment in the evolving digital world. Computers (both Mac and PC) are available to every classroom from preschool to grade 8. Preschool and kindergarten focus on basic usage including phonics games, basic typing and respecting the computer. Grades 1 through 4 have light usage in class with typing tutorials and basic understanding of some programs and apps. Lessons are bi-weekly. Grades 5 to 8 use computers almost daily to assist in research, reports, presenting, printing and typing. Fieldstone's approach to teaching Physical Education is to educate students on the importance of active living as a part of a healthy lifestyle. Students are given the skills necessary to participate in a variety of individual and team-based activities. Emphasis is placed on skill development, leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Students of all skill levels are able to participate in activities in a safe environment with positive messages about participation and the benefits of activity.
Physical education and staying active are vital to all students. We encourage various team and individual sports, including soccer, floor hockey, basketball, running, track and field, baseball and much more. Kendellhurst has four school house leagues that incorporate all age groups for internal school games and events. We offer monthly rotating classes of yoga, Zumba, box fit and hip hop dance through experienced and specialized instructors. These programs are included in our tuition.

Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
The Fieldstone Global Knowledge curriculum was carefully designed to be rich in content and sequential in presentation. Kindergarten students are introduced to all academic disciplines, including French, History and Geography. Students experience an engaging and enduring subject matter that lays a foundation for their future schooling and instills a love of learning in them. The English, Math, and Science curriculum is administered following the Cambridge Primary guidelines and philosophies. This prepares students for the completion of the entire Cambridge programme.
While Kendellhurst takes a whole child approach to education, we also have a structured and academic curriculum with traditional components such as phonics, reading, printing and lessons on mathematics, science, social studies via theme-based, fun and engaging songs and activities. We have French lessons everyday with a balance of conversational French and vocabulary building, preparing students for our grade level writing, presentations and reading programs in JK-Grade 8. We offer an enriched, well-rounded curriculum with weekly arts (music, drama and visual) and hands-on projects that delve deeper into curriculum strands. Our technology program prepares students for the broader world by incorporating educational software into the Pre-K and Kindergarten curriculums.
Accelerated
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).
Students are grouped according to ability in the classroom. They all complete and study the same programme; however, assessments and expectations vary depending on ability.
Teachers approach each student as an individual learner and thus work with strengths and challenges to ensure student progress and growth at each grade level. Many of our students move beyond grade level - if they are able to move forward with guidance.
Supportive
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
Fieldstone promotes a rich academic environment and celebrates academic performance. Students are provided with additional academic support in both curricula through the use of our after-school tutorial sessions. Students are also encouraged to demonstrate their academic abilities in math contests, science competitions, and after-school clubs.
Kendellhurst students excel through supportive, caring and qualified faculty who excel at teaching. Kendellhurst follows the Ontario curriculum with longer class times and low student-to-teacher ratio. Our students often exceed their grade level. Students with a clinically-diagnosed learning disability are invited to apply. Our school will review psychological education reports, report cards, and any other reports to assess if our school is the right fit for the student. A 'Buddy Day' (half or full-day visit to our school) and assessments may be required before acceptance is offered. If enrolled, a Student Success Plan (SSP) will be developed to support the student. This plan will outline the students' strengths and needs and will include accommodations and modifications necessary to promote student achievement.

When one of our teachers has a concern about a child's learning, they first meet with our Head of School. Our Head of School will then work with the student both in the classroom and in a one-on-one setting in order to get a better idea of the student's learning needs. The teacher and Head of School will meet with parents to develop a student success plan that outlines individual learning goals and accommodations. If, after the plan has been implemented, it is believed that more support is needed, the school will recommend a psychological education assessment, occupational therapy support, or speech therapy.
We suggest parents first visit our school with their child for an initial tour to assess whether the academic climate is appropriate for their child. We then offer a one day visit for us to assess each student's needs and how/if we can accommodate any special needs.
