    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.

    Our Take

    GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TORONTO

GIST bases instruction on the curriculum developed in Thüringen, a state at the geographic and cultural heart of Germany. It’s also inspected regularly by officials from that region who come in order to ensure that the school meets the standards set out within the curriculum, something it does for all of the 140 German schools around the globe. They were formed to offer education to German expats, though their popularity grew in response to local demand. The schools offered a quality, a unique pedagogical approach, and a sense of globalism that was hard to find in other institutions. The school provides dual-immersion, admitting students for whom either of the instructional languages are mother tongues. The ideal student is one who is intellectually curious, keen to learn languages, and who is excited by the prospect of learning and living within a rich, diverse, and uniquely authentic cultural environment.

    FORT ERIE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Though relatively new, FEIA has a lot to offer, beginning with extensive physical resources. The campus includes two academic buildings, with some structures dating to the 1920s, and others, modernist, constructed in the 1960s. Learning and living areas are varied, spacious, and developed in ways that you simply don’t find in international schools of this vintage. To build a campus this large and well-appointed would be a feat for any school in its first years. Also beginning construction is a boarding facility that, once finished, promises to be jewel of the property. To say the school is proximate to the Canada-US border risks understatement—Buffalo, New York, is just across the Niagara River, the shore of which is just a block from the FEIA campus. Also close by is the largest customs port between the two countries. As such, the school has access a considerable array of transportation hubs, including both the Toronto and Buffalo international airports. The academic program is rigorous, created for students intending to go on to post-secondary studies in North America. The co-curricular program adds dimension to student life, and is rightly a priority of faculty. Given that the school is relatively new, FEIA perhaps isn’t the first option that comes to mind, though that will surely change, particularly with the completion of the dormitory. It’s a strong option, to be sure, and definitely a school to watch.

  • SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

    Message from school leadership

    Message from school leadership

The German International School Toronto is a private, co-educational, German immersion school which provides students with a unique international perspective by combining the best of both the Canadian and German curricula.

Non-denominational and co-educational, the German International School Toronto teaches German and English-speaking students side by side and offers its students a seamless transition into both the Canadian and the European school systems. With classes from Kindergarten through Grade 11, the school creates a unique, multicultural experience within a warm and nurturing environment.

By combining a strong curriculum with small class sizes, a wide array of cultural events and extracurricular programs, including Drama, Art and Music, the school allows students to excel academically and develop individually. As Ontario’s only German full-time day school and one of 140 recognized German Schools worldwide, we offer a very attractive alternative to other Canadian independent schools.

The German International School Toronto is part of a network of 140 German Schools Abroad which are sponsored by the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA) on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office. From Kuala Lumpur to Kiev and Toronto to Tokyo German Schools Abroad place particular emphasis on individual development, multilingualism and intercultural exchange. With the support of the Federal Republic of Germany and excellent teachers, students of German Schools Abroad receive a first-class education and obtain German as well as local qualifications. It is the German language and culture, education, as well as encounters and exchanges that form the cornerstones of German Schools Abroad.

I am honoured to serve as Fort Erie Academy's principal! This is my sixth year in educational leadership. Before becoming principal, I had many leadership experiences, including lead teacher, student life coordinator, and vice principal. Throughout these amazing experiences, teaching still remains central to my everyday practices.

I also have more than ten years of classroom teaching experience in private boarding schools in Southeast Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Canada. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English and History (University of Guelph), a Graduate Diploma in Education (University of Newcastle, Australia), a Teacher Leadership Specialist, a Guidance and Career Education Specialist, and an Ontario College of Teachers Principal qualification.

I am privileged to lead Fort Erie International Academy and the many talented teachers and students here! My goal is to continue to bring passion to education with a commitment to creating a supportive climate and culture at F.E.I.A. conducive to teaching the “Whole Child,” empowering staff & students by creating a conducive environment for teaching and learning, implementing meaningful initiatives, and inspiring life-long learning and well-being! I look forward to working with all stakeholders in our growing school community this year!

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TORONTO

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

      FORT ERIE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.

      Our Take: secondary curriculum type

      Our Take: secondary curriculum type

      GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TORONTO

Some private schools offer International Baccalaureate (IB) programming. The "Diploma Programme" is offered to students in the final two years of high school, while the "Primary Years Programme" (ages 3 to 12) and "Middle Years Programme" (ages 11 to 16) serve as preparation for the diploma program.

What the school says about their curriculum

What the school says about their curriculum

      GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TORONTO

Our curriculum is a synthesis of content and competency based pedagogy. It is enriched with subject matter from the Ontario curriculum, but its content, processes, methods, and assessments primarily focus on the German curriculum, as defined by the federal state of Thuringia. Academic proficiencies are coupled with competencies directed at developing students’ skills (studying, motivating, partnering, and participating) and their personal attributes (relating, cooperating, and communicating).

      FORT ERIE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

At Fort Erie International Academy, our academics are delivered with an experiential approach. We develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Students are highly engaged with this style of learning as they apply the concepts they learn in a practical manner. We achieve a balance between individual and group activities. Group activity is the norm in our classes with students taking on leadership roles. Together they learn to collaborate and to appreciate different opinions as they achieve common goals.

Our Kindergarten program is based on a traditional German model of discovery, examination, and the development of personal skills as they relate to oneself and others. The program is delivered in an atmosphere of caring, understanding, and compassion. Subjects that will become traditional tenets of elementary school are carefully and slowly introduced. The Kindergarten program is also enriched with aspects of Ontario’s Inquiry Based Learning Model. Its emphasis on the joy of new experiences and early learning strategies like conversation, sharing, and imagining play a significant role in our students’ growth as inquisitive and inspired learners.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TORONTO

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

The FEIA International Student Application Process includes four inclusive steps that must be completed in full before we can grant enrolment acceptance to any student applicant:

    1. Email the completed form and the confirmation code provided by your banking institution authenticating your $300CAD non-refundable application fee.
    2. Once received, our administrative office will contact you to set up an interview and assessment testing with a member of our Academic Leadership Team.
    3. After review of the results of the interview/assessment, successful students will receive an official invitation to join our FEIA Family. Within this acceptance letter, there will be a request to pay all applicable tuition, health insurance, residency, school uniform, banking and Study Permit/Visa application fees. If applicable, you will be assigned a registered FEIA immigration consultant to work with you to complete both a Canadian Study Permit and Visa application.
    4. When the Study Permit and Visa are granted and shared with FEIA, and all fees have been received, we will issue a letter of final acceptance and share further details about your school experience.
