Glenlyon Norfolk School started its long life in 1913 as a girls school, the founders intending to establish something better, something more forward thinking, much like other girls’ schools that have a similar pedigree. Later, a boys school was established nearby, and in 1986 they combined to become the school, at least in broad outlines, as it exists today. In keeping with the initial vision, the school intends to be at the leading edge of instruction, continually evaluating what it offers and ensuring that it’s in keeping with what students will need for success at post-secondary studies and beyond. In 1996 it became an IB World School with the adoption of the Diploma Programme, adding the Middle Years Programme and Primary Years Programme in 2004 and 2007, respectively. With them, GNS became one of the first schools in the country to offer the full continuum. The tradition of evaluation and evolution continues today, in a very literal sense, with the school in the midst of an ambitious strategic plan, one intending to keep the school at the forefront of innovation while reflecting the values and ideals that have informed the life of the school for more than a century. The offering, rightly, is highly regarded, and serves as an example to other schools nationally. The ideal student is one who can thrive in a challenging, vibrant, dynamic learning environment.
View full reportNorthstar isn’t your average Montessori school, in part because of its size—with an annual student population of 300, it’s a fair bit larger than the average—as well as its resources. The school was founded in 1996, though has grown its programs considerably in the intervening decades. There are some things that understandably stand out, such as the training pool, which is a recent addition, though they only underscore a more general awareness of the broad range of programming and facilities throughout the school. There are lots of bells and whistles, all of them welcome, though the core program is here too, with a fidelity to the Montessori method as demonstrated through CCMA accreditation. The program is offered from preschool through Grade 8, allowing families a consistency of approach and experience through the primary and elementary years.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. The Montessori approach to Math involves providing the students with a physical and concrete experience of mathematical concepts and then moving toward the abstract understanding of concepts and the memorization of Math facts. Students will be initially be introduced to counting and number recognition and then move toward the understanding of the place value of numbers and the formation of 4 digit numbers. Once the students have mastered these concepts they will be introduced to the operations of Math. Areas of study in the Elementary Math curriculum include, the further understanding and memorization of Math facts, Geometry, Fractions and Algebra (program dependent). Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.
Reading is taught through the IB Primary Years Programme Units of Inquiry as well as a separate foundation skill. Teachers differentiate for all learners making it possible for all students to progress at their own pace.
The Montessori Language program is phonetically based. Students are introduced to the phonetic sounds of letters through tracing the Sandpaper Letters; where in addition to hearing the sound they are experiencing the letter formation (early writing). Once a student has masters 10 to 12 sounds they will be introduced to a variety of early reading materials including word building, phonetic reading lists and eventually readers. Student will progress at their own pace and with guidance from their teachers. Through repetition and daily reading students will gain total reading, which involves reading with comprehension.

Students work on this skill by using a writing continuum that has been co-constructed by them. The Science/Culture curriculum includes the study of animals, their habitats, fundamental needs, external and internal construction, classification and characteristics. The Expanding Communities approach organizes the curriculum around students’ present, everyday experience. In the younger grades, students might learn about themselves, for example. As they move through the grades, the focus gradually broadens in scope: to the family, neighbourhood, city, province, country, and globe. The curriculum tends to have less focus on history than Core Knowledge programs.
Usually focused on teaching history and geography at an early age, the core knowledge approach uses story, drama, reading, and discussion to teach about significant people, places, and events. The Montessori philosophy is still applied in the physical education program. Since students in each classroom have a 3yr mixed age range it is expected to see various degrees in their physical and social skills. By allowing the older students the opportunity to demonstrate for the younger ones, it increases their desire to participate even if their abilities are still developing. The younger ones are enthused with the effort and will apply the same effort. In addition, those that are not understanding clearly or have communication barriers, will use their observation skills to determine what needs to be done. Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Students are not limited by age as to the materials they are exposed too. The student\'s skills and abilities are assessed to determine if they are ready to move forward in the curriculum area.
Supportive
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
Northstar provides a supportive environment where students are involved in their leaning and assessments. Teachers consider the learning styles of their students as they deliver instruction. Students’ individual learning strengths and areas of concerns are discussed with students and we then set learning goals together. GNS has a team of learning strategists who are committed to inclusion and assistance in providing opportunities for all students to do their best. Through the collaborative partnership between subject and LS teachers, we nurture an environment that supports differentiation for each individual's learning differences. Support is provided through a model consisting of small group and in-class support. Emphasis is on individual learning in which students embrace how they learn and employ strategies independently to achieve success.

The function of our school is to augment the development of each child – intellectually, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically so that the child may eventually emerge as a well-rounded independent adult. Students requiring supports outside of Northstar’s expertise will be supported through all avenues possible, including welcoming community partners and other professionals into the environment to help build a better understanding of the students’ learning needs. We will support both child and the family by meeting with all necessary persons to understand the child’s needs and to learn about and implement any individualized plans and accommodations that have been put forth.

We are looking for well-rounded students that exhibit the 5 As: Academics, Athletics, Arts, Adventure, and Active Citzenship. A student who is curious, engaged and kind and who will appreciate the small, close-knit community that is GNS and will take advantage of all of the opportunities given to them here whether it be in the arts, athletics, the IB program, service, or the Round Square.
A child coming from another Montessori school would be able to transition in our school easier as they are familiar with how the class is set up, the materials and how to work with it.
Application requirements include receiving a completed application form along with a $250 application fee and the two most recent report cards for the applying student. Older students must then complete the entrance exams. We also require the completion of a confidential student report from a current teacher. For international students, we also require copies of passports for both the student and his or her parents, as these are necessary for preparation of custodianship documents. Once these items are received, we perform an onsite or Skype interview. We also prefer, where possible, for the applying student to visit the school for a day.
Generally when we assess a child, we mainly focus on their language and math skills.
