Schools are founded for a range of reasons, though a few are founded out of a very acute need, and that’s the case with Heritage. Louise Brazeau-Ward’s son had dyslexia, and she had watched him struggle in traditional academic settings, something which inspired her to make a difference in his life and the lives of others like him. Today she’s a world renowned expert in dyslexia, and a proponent of the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach to instruction which she then adapted. All of that forms the foundation of Heritage Academy, the school that Brazeau-Ward created in 1989. Today the school is run by her daughter, and the program, though having grown over the years, remains consistent to its founding mission. The school provides support for students with dyslexia as well as other challenges. The environment—one that is created to address the needs of the students—can itself be transformative. For many students, that’s what Heritage principally offers.
View full reportAvalon began in 2000 with a single toddler room and one casa classroom and has happily grown ever since. The program today extends through Grade 8, offering a consistency for children through the primary and elementary grades. Likewise, the breadth allows for a greater interaction between generations than elsewhere, something that is rightly a cornerstone of the Montessori approach. The best Montessori schools are those that retain a fidelity to the core of the method while also meeting the needs of the community it serves, expressing their diversity and their values. Certainly, that’s a great strength of Avalon, and one of the reasons that families consistently turn to it. In the nearly two decades of the school’s life it has earned an impressive reputation for good work, professional development, and a strong delivery of the core curriculum. No doubt, it continues to provide all of that and then some.

Heritage Academy of Learning Excellence, founded by Louise Brazeau-Ward, has come a long way since its inception. In the early 1980s, Louise (as she is known at the school) was a frustrated parent tired of watching her dyslexic son continually struggle in school. This compelled her to focus her time and energy towards dyslexia research in order to help her son and other children struggling with this learning exceptionality. Through her involvement in this issue, Louise became an internationally recognized expert in the field of dyslexia research and therapy. With the goal of providing an academic environment that met the unique needs of students with dyslexia and other learning exceptionalities, Louise opened Heritage Academy in 1989.
As Louise began to train new teachers, she recognized the necessity for a specialized system to support the development and strengthening of written language skills in dyslexic students. To meet this need, she developed the Simultaneous Multisensory Teaching method (SMT), a unique learning system available in both English and French. Since its introduction, teachers, students and parents alike have found this system to be a highly effective way of improving and enhancing reading, writing and spelling skills in dyslexic students. SMT is still taught at Heritage Academy, with the concepts being integrated into all aspects of the curriculum. SMT is also utilized in schools and homes throughout Canada and abroad.
With Louise Ward’s retirement in 2006, Heritage Academy is now under the watchful eye of Cheryl Ward, Louise’s daughter. The school has grown larger, but remains true to its original purpose. We continue to specialize in supporting dyslexic students, and have expanded our expertise to provide additional comprehensive support to students with a variety of learning exceptionalities. By promoting the values of honesty, perseverance and respect, Heritage Academy fosters acceptance and growth amongst our students, and enables them to reach their full academic potential.
Awareness of learning exceptionalities has been steadily increasing in recent years. Learning exceptionalities are being more readily diagnosed and progress is being made to lift the negative connotations traditionally associated with such exceptionalities.
Recent research has concluded that dyslexia, ADHD and many other learning exceptionalities are not linked to levels of intelligence. Rather, this indicates that students who receive appropriate accommodations to support their learning challenges can still excel academically.

Our annual school production is the highlight of the year and we just staged an amazing version of Alice in Wonderland. Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.

Mathematics are an exciting part of the Montessori classroom. In the early grades ( K - grade 3) students use specially designed concrete Montessori materials to explore mathematic concepts. Our older elementary Montessori students ( Grades 4 - 6) begin to move away from the materials to a more abstract study of increasingly complex mathematics, geometry, and algebra. At this point, the JUMP method is introduced as it complements the Montessori approach. Middle school students use the JUMP method and their work is often supplemented with text books at a grade level ahead.
We utilize textbooks that follow along with the Ontario Curriculum as well as online resources (ie. Mathletics, Gizmos).

Our physical education program is driven by our philosophy which stresses balanced opportunities in skills acquisition, leadership athletics, personal growth and healthy competition. Our goal is for students to develop healthy habits that will remain with them for life. All students are members of the cross country and track and field teams and participate in a variety of sports, onsite and in the community. These include skiing, snowboarding, and tennis. On a competitive level, Avalon is very successful at both cross country and track and field. We currently hold the trophy for the senior track and field event and look forward to defending our title.

The Montessori Casa program provides a prepared environment for children ages 2 1/2 to 6 years. The didactic materials used in the classroom are based on the pedagogy developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, and aid the child in the learning process. Student-paced
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Flexible pacing allows the students to fully comprehend a concept before being 'forced' to move on. Differentiated instruction allows students to work at their own pace, remaining engaged and challenged.

Because of our small class sizes and supportive approach, Avalon is often able to enhance the curriculum to include student interests, making classroom experiences more exciting and promoting greater student engagement. Avalon's Learning Support Programis carefully designed to support students with diagnosed learning disabilities and IEPs. The goal of the program is to support the academic, social, emotional and physical development of the student. Support will be given in a variety of ways, including indirect support, resource assistance, withdrawal assistance and special education within an integrated program, Program specifics are based on the individual needs of the student, in collaboration with the support team and parents/guardians. At the Casa and early elementary level, it is important that parents/guardians have an understanding of or a willingness to learn about the Montessori method of education. As older students apply to the school, it is important that families understand the nature and benefits of a small school and are committed to not only the growth and development of their own children but to the Avalon community as a whole. Late applicants may be accepted depending on available space. In this instance an individual pay schedule will be created on a case-by-case basis. Interested families are invited to contact the school to set up a visit and classroom observation. A classroom observation is a mandatory part of the application process. Following the observation, interested families will sit down with an Avalon Director to determine if the application process should proceed.
At the Elementary level, students are invited to spend at day at Avalon, allowing for an informal observation by the teacher and an opportunity for the student to gain experience in the classroom. The elementary application must be accompanied by copies of the 2 most recent report cards.
Students applying to the Middle School are required to complete a questionnaire in addition to the above. We believe that the adolescent student must have a strong desire to attend Avalon and be willing to be active participants in their own education.
