The school began its life in 1901 as the Highfield School for Boys, though it has grown, amalgamated, moved, and changed its name a few times since then. All of that is reflected in the physical plan of the school, one that bears no outward signs of the school’s age. The development path included associations and amalgamations between Highfield, Hillcrest, and Strathallan schools and colleges, their names combining to form the one under which it is known today. The school has earned its strong reputation for all the right reasons, namely providing a basis for success in postsecondary school and beyond.

Though when we pick up our kids from school each day, we’re not thinking about those things. Instead, we ask: “How was your day?” Maybe we ask it reflexively, but when it comes to how children learn, that’s actually where the rubber really meets the road. Kids learn best in a consistent, supportive, personal, safe, and community-focused environment. Providing that kind of environment is what forms a basis for all of the work at Kingsley. When they say “thrive” they mean it in the broad sense—gaining a strong academic foundation—but also in the sense of having fun, gaining confidence, and finding a voice within a community of peers. The programs are strong, the teaching staff seasoned, and the school has had consistent success for more than three decades. For the families that enroll here, all of that is important. Likewise, the strength and focus of the learning environment is often, quite rightly, a principle draw. After all, a child's ability to thrive in life begins in having a good day, today.

Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.
Reggio Emilia programs are offered by some schools at the preschool and elementary level. The approach aims to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of projects (as opposed to activities or lessons): teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. They can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. The philosophy calls for a high degree of parent involvement as well, particularly when forming curricula and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).
HSC offers enriched academic, art and athletic programs to students 18 months through Grade 12. We are committed to shifting practices and methodologies from a teacher-directed, content-oriented environment to one that is strongly influenced by student inquiry, creativity and innovation. The role of the teacher becomes even more important in the learning process and changes to greater facilitation, coaching and mentoring. Knowing each student’s interests, talents and skills builds an effective learning partnership that will better enable students to reach their full potential. Students learn in a resource-rich, small class environment and are encouraged to seek academic challenges and to take risks in their learning. Our curriculum is designed to foster a love of learning, and to provide a great beginning for our students as they embark on their educational journey. At HSC, our students will be able to connect mathematics to the world around them and confidently use these skills in their everyday life. In elementary grades focus is put on, developing number sense, developing and understanding patterns, and problem solving. Traditionally, teachers of mathematics have relied solely on direct instruction in which teacher deliver knowledge to the students, show them examples followed by a series of practice opportunities. HSC also provides students with more opportunities to discover the joy of mathematics and to have more exposure to hands-on activities and the use of manipulatives. In the Senior School, students are offered both regular and applied mathematics depending on their mathematical ability and learning styles. As part of HSC's Advanced Placement Program, HSC students may take the AP Calculus in their final year. It is our belief that all students should be exposed to challenging problems, such as mathematics contests.

HSC's Early Reading curriculum consists of learning sequencing skills - top to bottom, left to right progression, recognizing child’s own first name, introducing upper and lower case letters and their sounds, discriminating between upper and lower case letters, developing rhyming skills, and organizing thought process to share ideas and stories. As a result, we provide activities that allow students to express themselves in a variety of ways, such as formal, creative, and reflective writing, which is then shared as text, orally, or through multi-media presentations. Extension and enrichment takes place both in and outside of the classroom through activities such as the Writer-in–Residence Program, Unfinished Writing Tours, Public Speaking Contests and Writing Contests

Having a lovely piece of finished work to hang on our walls is a wonderful way to show our talents, but how we get there is the most important part. In Visual Arts, students create new and original artwork using a variety of media. In Middle School, music students in Grade 5 build on choral skills established in the Junior and Montessori schools prior to learning a musical instrument in Grade 6. Dramatic skills are developed through cross-curricular opportunities and the Drama program in Senior School. At HSC, students are encouraged to expand their artistic interests by taking part in the extensive co-curricular program, ranging from musicals, plays, wind ensemble, jazz, and visual arts clubs. Whether they are performing on stage or having their artwork on display throughout the College, our students form a real sense of pride and self-confidence in their artistic abilities.
MUSIC: Students receive four weekly periods of specialist music instruction and perform at two concerts per year. They begin recorder in Grade One, read music by Grade Two/Three, and join Band in Grade Four/Five. In choir, they learn proper singing techniques and sing in parts. We take fun music field trips, including a bus trip to the symphony every April. Students have the opportunity to join a lunchtime ukulele club or take private lessons after school in singing, piano, guitar, ukulele, and theory. A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. The HSC Physical Education program offers participants exposure to a variety of physical activities in a co-operative and enjoyable environment. The emphasis is on experiencing fun and fitness through physical activity and on actively participating. Creativity, confidence and general physical fitness are developed through movement exploration and an introduction to basic sports skills. Academic skills are reinforced through the use of games that emphasize active learning. The health units explore healthy active living, growth and development and substance use/abuse with a focus on preparing the students to make informed decisions. In upper years of Senior Schools, students are provided the opportunity to spend a week in Hawaii where they will earn their "personal trainer certification".
We have a fun and rigorous physical education program that begins in pre-K and is taught by a specialty teacher. There are also ample opportunities throughout the day for outdoor play engaging gross motor skills. Students are outdoors 2-3 times daily.
Play-based
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.

Kingsley offers both a half-day and full-day kindergarten program. Our play-based (Reggio Emilia-inspired) class offers many avenues for our young learners to thrive. Our small class sizes allow for individual attention and a balance of teacher-led lessons as well as time for each child to explore on their own and with peers. Our enriched curriculum consists of French, music, and physical education classes taught by specialty teachers beginning in kindergarten.
Student-paced
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Our school approach is to meet each child from the place of their development and work from there. We believe in a differentiated approach for all children at our school. Classes are teacher led, and differentiation then applied.
Supportive
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
HSC provides a rigorous academic learning environment to best prepare our students for post secondary success. This programming is delivered in a supportive and individualized fashion, to ensure that the unique learning needs of each student are met.

At Kingsley we believe in partnering with our parents. If a child is demonstrating learning difficulties we make sure to bring this to the parents attention. We work together to find the right solution for the family that we are able to support as a school. Families often have a team in place that we will work with, and if appropriate to our school environment as a whole, we welcome them into the school as support for the child.

Through our admissions process, we endeavour to select students who will be active participants in all aspects of College life.
Kingsley School focuses upon achieving individualized student success, and best serves students who demonstrate: 1.
