The program has grown considerably since the early days, which is always a good sign, and now operates two campuses. The interior spaces are bright, uncluttered, and inviting—the school understands that environment is important, and it shows. Instruction is cross curricular, and driven by student directed inquiry, in many ways very purposefully drawing on the best practices of the Reggio Emilia approach. The quality of the before and after care programs are a draw, so much so that a long roster of area schools have partnered with them in order to serve their own parent populations.

Discovery Math turns traditional math on its head: it frequently begins by introducing a novel problem to students, and works its way back to “discovering” a method of solving the problem. The goal is to ground mathematical procedures and algorithms firmly in their applications, and to challenge students to think critically about how they might go about solving the problem right from the beginning. Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
These programs have an equal emphasis on receptive and creative learning.
In Visual Art courses students are taught how to 'see'. They learn technical words and techniques to produce works which may be included for presentation in their senior years in a portfolio while applying to post-secondary programs. Assignments cover drawing, perspective, painting, printmaking, design, art history and Visual arts exams which are studio based. Each grade explores different mediums in the different disciplines.
Dance, drama, and artistic expression are critical vehicles for learning in a Reggio-inspired classroom. They are used to allow our students to interpret experiences on their own and express their understanding in a personal manner. VMA incorporates the arts in many of our investigative research projects and explorations. Students receive a minimum of one art exploration a week but often have much more opportunity for art, particularly in our Kindergarten classrooms Throughout the school year, VMA highlights different communities of artists through a school-wide artist study. A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.
Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.
Students are best served when the use of technology enhances the learning that takes place in the classroom. HNMCS embraces the use of technology throughout the curriculum, and our broad use of Smart Boards and interactive projectors in all classrooms recognizes the importance of technology in education. Our school is fully accessible through wireless connectivity, leverages on site servers and cloud based technologies, utilizes educational software and communities, promotes the safe use of social media, and offers a green room multimedia environment for study and exploration. The Holy Name of Mary College School Athletic Department provides opportunities for girls to pursue athletic excellence in a variety of sports while upholding Catholic core values and developing determination, resilience, balance, a sense of fair play, and pride in self and community. The athletic program at HNMCS is an integral part of the total growth experience. Student-athletes will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing commitment, balance, and resilience as part of a strong and caring community. Pride in self and school, integrity and commitment are continually strengthened through participation on our teams. We believe that the life lessons learned through sport help to strengthen the Catholic values that will guide our students well into the future.
In part of our approach to developing the whole child, we seek to ensure that our students take time to care for themselves throughout the day. On a daily basis, students are provided with time for meditation and are supported with ongoing conversations about taking care of our bodies and our minds. As a part of our physical education curriculum, VMA offers a minimum of 3 specialized sports programs for 4-8 week sessions. Specialized coaches from outside of VMA teach these programs. Sports may include but are not limited to karate, skating, soccer, basketball, and gymnastics. VMA's physical education program also extends into the community to participate in baseball, tennis, cross country, and tobogganing. VMA also has regular access to Franklin Horner community centers gym for indoor sports days such as Floor Hockey Day and Basketball Day.

Reggio Emilia programs aim to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of “projects”, (as opposed to “activities” or “lessons”). Teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. Projects can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. A high degree of parent involvement is also encouraged, particularly when forming curriculums and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).

The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

Holy Name of Mary College School welcomes applications from candidates eager to be a part of the school's enriched academic environment. There are no hidden social criteria; we simply want the best students to apply, regardless of their background. The admissions process to Holy Name of Mary Catholic School is a straightforward once you've decided that this is the school for your daughter:
1. Complete application online: apply.hnmcs.ca
2. Attach a recent student photograph.
3. Scan and upload to the Application portal, copies of the applicant’s Academic Documents (final report cards from the previous two years and the most recent report card for the current year and, if applicable, a current Ontario Student Transcript copy).
4. Complete the Confidential Student Profile and ensure that it is sent directly from the applicant’s current principal, guidance counsellor or teacher to HNMCS ([email protected]).
5. Submit a non-refundable Application Fee of $125. Application fee for international students is $250.
6. Please submit all the above application information by November 30. Applications received after this date will be accepted and reviewed based on available space.
7. Register for the Admissions Test, which will be written in early December. To register for the test, go to: holynameofmarycollegeschool.com/admissions.
8. Once all requirements have been completed, the Office of Admissions will contact the family to schedule a one-on-one meeting with the candidate.
9. Offers of Admission will be sent by email in late February.
While Holy Name of Mary College School is an independent school, the tuition is not intended to exclude students on a financial basis. An income-based bursary programme is available for those in need and we encourage families to seek financial assistance when it is required. Applications for financial assistance must be submitted by November 30.
