Private schools, of course, intend to offer an alternative, and Kendellhurst is a great example of that. The program is founded in an approach to ECE that borrows the best from Montessori and other alternative approaches, yet does it in a very tailored, intentional way in order to best address the needs of the students that attend. It's less about doctrine than meeting the specific needs of student population. There are three locations, though all feel a piece of the communities that they sit within, something that the Streetsville location is a particularly good example of. The educational context is local, small, and integrated with the needs of the families that enroll here. The feel is homey, comfortable, and supportive, and camp sessions allow families to extend that experience into the summer months, providing an opportunity for continuity between school terms. Organic meals and after school programs are included with tuition, something that can provide a welcome support to the daily management of family life.
View full reportWhen Albert College was founded, British North America was a group of colonies—confederation was still decades away—and Prince Albert, for who the school is named, was still alive. The college has had, clearly, a very long life, something that grants a unique life to the school and a unique perspective on learning. When students study WWII, for example, they learn about Lloyd George Bishop, an alumni who was killed in action in the first full year of that war. When they gather at the holidays, they sing the “Boar’s Head Carol,” just as their predecessors have done for, literally, more than a century. Yes, those are just details, but what they suggest to students can be quite galvanizing, namely that they are participating in something far larger than themselves. Moreover, the school, throughout its life, has remained at the leading edge of education in the country—when it was founded, it was co-ed, which was unusual for the time—offering a robust liberal arts education, with a focus on citizenship and character, preparing students for post-secondary study. Classes are small, the feel is close knit. More than ever, the school attracts a diverse student population, drawn from across Canada and around the world. The campus is very well appointed, with access to outdoor athletics and recreational spaces, and host to a long list of co-curricular activities. In every way, there's a lot to love.

Our math program incorporates a strong sense of traditional math skills, such as times tables, division, etc. However, we also include a broader math program with problem solving, group problem solving and more challenging math for students who are excel at this subject. We also incorporate technology such as IPads, computers and chromebooks to further our math program.
At Albert College, students are provided with the traditional skills through both a procedural approach as well as inquiry-based learning. They expand upon their understandings of concepts through collaborative discussions in 'thinking classrooms.' Teachers are keen on making sure that students have the necessary tools to show their understandings by using appropriate assessment techniques to ensure greater appreciation for metacognitive processes.

Kendellhurst uses formal printing, cursive and grammar programs. Our language arts program is structured with workbooks sent home weekly, weekly spelling quizzes and one book report per term. Our program is consistent and builds from grade-to-grade.
Our phonics-intensive program goes hand-in-hand with our writing program. As students learn to read, they also practice writing with a kinaesthetic approach that transfers to pen and paper writing. More formal lessons in printing and cursive writing continue into the elementary grades where students are exposed to writing in various genres. Usually focused on teaching history and geography at an early age, the core knowledge approach uses story, drama, reading, and discussion to teach about significant people, places, and events. Breadth of content and knowledge is emphasized. In our Junior School students are first introduced to French in our Kindergarten program to foster a curiosity and love for learning another language. As a well-rounded school environment, Kendellhurst has a strong arts program. SK to grade 3 students have recorder lessons bi-weekly while students in grades 4 and up may choose guitar, piano or flute. Kendellhurst offers a strong visual arts program with 3 curriculum driven field trips to the AGO, ROM, TSO or YPT! We offer hip hop dance on a monthly basis too! Our students prepare a winter and end-of-year production in French or English (language dependent on the year).
THE ARTS PROGRAM ENABLES STUDENTS TO BECOME CREATIVE, CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS. Students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 participate and engage in artistic instruction. All classes are led by faculty, specialized artists and instructors and are tailored to each student’s abilities to ensure a challenging program. Specialized courses are offered at the Senior School for credit. A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

All classrooms have 80 inch digital interactive displays allowing a complete and seamless teaching and learning environment in the evolving digital world. Computers (both Mac and PC) are available to every classroom from preschool to grade 8. Preschool and kindergarten focus on basic usage including phonics games, basic typing and respecting the computer. Grades 1 through 4 have light usage in class with typing tutorials and basic understanding of some programs and apps. Lessons are bi-weekly. Grades 5 to 8 use computers almost daily to assist in research, reports, presenting, printing and typing. Students in grades 5 to 8 also have personal Chromebook using the EDWIN program from Nelson Education.
At Albert College, we have online working expectations through which students can seamlessly shift from being in-person to being at a distance as a learner. Digital citizenship concepts and understandings are integrated into our offerings as required for various age groups. Physical education and staying active are vital to all students. We encourage various team and individual sports, including soccer, floor hockey, basketball, running, track and field, baseball and much more. Kendellhurst has four school house leagues that incorporate all age groups for internal school games and events. We offer monthly rotating classes of yoga, Zumba, box fit and hip hop dance through experienced and specialized instructors. These programs are included in our tuition.
Our athletes are coached by a dedicated group of staff and faculty members that are highly certified in their respective sports and tireless in their dedication and enthusiasm. Students are given the opportunity to play on a team, refine their skills, try new things and develop a healthy, active lifestyle. Our athletes compete regularly against teams from the Conference of Independent Schools and those in our local associations. Each term there is a wide range of athletic opportunities. Some are competitive, some developmental and some simply recreational. Specialized courses at the Senior School provide the students with an academic credit.

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.

In Pre-Kindergarten children need a warm, inviting, accepting and supervised program that will stimulate their growth and development and maintain their curiosity about learning. Pre-K students experience active, experiential learning through play and a comprehensive, integrated curriculum of carefully-planned and child-centred daily activities. The purpose of the Pre-K program is to focus on the development of the whole child – physical, social, emotional, and intellectual – in preparation for early and ongoing success in our formal Junior and Senior Kindergarten.

The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
Teachers approach each student as an individual learner and thus work with strengths and challenges to ensure student progress and growth at each grade level. Many of our students move beyond grade level - if they are able to move forward with guidance.

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

We suggest parents first visit our school with their child for an initial tour to assess whether the academic climate is appropriate for their child. We then offer a one day visit for us to assess each student's needs and how/if we can accommodate any special needs.
