    Developmental Priorities

    Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.
    Intellectual
The goal is to cultivate "academically strong, creative and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions."
    Social
The goal is to cultivate "socially aware and active citizens, motivated to change the world (or their community) for the better."

    Curriculum

    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
    Student-paced
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.

    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Our Take

    KEYSTONE SCHOOL

One of the resources of Keystone International Schools is the city itself, something that administration has very consciously built into the programs. Toronto has a wealth of resources, of course and Keystone strives, rightly, to make the most of them. While not a preparatory school in name, the program nevertheless addresses itself to a student population preparing for success at university. Supports are in place for international students, and the school adopts an international gaze, looking well beyond the school walls, educating students to be adept at international communication and engagement. The ideal student is one able to thrive within a diverse, collaborative academic environment.

    CHISHOLM ACADEMY

Chisholm was created to address the needs of the kinds of learners who are prone to falling through the cracks of a traditional education. Special needs is the term we might use, though the definition used at Chisholm admits a broader understanding than we typically grant, including students from across the entire academic spectrum. What they share is a need for a more structured academic experience. The school is headed by Dr. Howard Bernstein and Dr. Shirley Bryntwick, both clinical psychologists. The ideal student is one who requires more than they are able to get from a traditional academic setting, and who benefits from a very structured, personal, planned approach to their education. A robust interface between parents and the school is encouraged, and close communication is ongoing throughout the academic year.

If a student is ever in need of guidance from any member of our academic team, we are always there to provide hands-on, individualized support."

As students make friends & become increasingly confident, learning becomes easier. CHISHOLM ACADEMY

"The "normalized" environment we create, allows us to function as a traditional school yet employ all the aspects of individual educational plans. • SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

    Message from school leadership

    Message from school leadership

Welcome to Keystone International School, a dynamic, boutique school, in the heart of Toronto.

We strive to involve students in their own learning experience. Teachers are not lecturers but are facilitators in the classrooms. Our inquiry-based, holistic approach to education encourage students to take action and become life-long learners. We always remind students that every subject has a relation to the real world. Whenever we can get away from the classroom, we make sure to do that; it’s far more interesting to go check out some super structures to think the physics behind it, see live art pieces and discuss them at the museum, or play logic games to calculate probability for math class. In Economics or Business, we observe a product over time to understand the effects of demand and supply. All these experiments keep students interested and makes learning easier, fun and most importantly permanent.

At Keystone, we nurture our students to be well-rounded and intuitive individuals while challenging them to excel academically. Our culturally diverse environment prepares our students for the future when they will be collaborating with others at a global level.

It is incredibly satisfying to know that we created Chisholm Academy with the help of thousands of parents, students and staff.  I believe that we are the premier private school, for students who need support based on their learning or emotional needs.  Success has been demonstarted in the amount of time that our staff stays with our school, the acceptance rate into college and university and our students success in the work force and with their family.  You can only imagine the joy we all feel when students visit Chisholm Acaedemy, to "show off" their success and their families with young children.  Parents "lend us" the children with the hope and excectation that we will nurture them and teach them the lessons they require academically and to ensure they are the fine citizens that we want our chidren to become.  It continues to ne an honour to lead Chisholm Academy with the help of so many supporters.  Best wishes, Dr. B.

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      KEYSTONE SCHOOL

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

      CHISHOLM ACADEMY

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

      KEYSTONE SCHOOL

Our students are prepared for the rigours of university, while acquiring practical life skills. This combination makes them valuable in the global workplace. Student-centred learning focuses on the student’s needs, abilities, interests, and learning styles, with the lecturer as a facilitator of learning. Intentional learning develops students’ explicit understanding of their own approach to learning as well as confidence in their discipline-specific knowledge base in order to confidently address cross-curricular skills and metacognitive functions.

      CHISHOLM ACADEMY

Chisholm Academy, as the IEP school, writes individual education plans for every student. Academy staff always follows the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum but are able to accommodate students as according to their individual plans. This approach allows all students to move towards reaching a level playing field with those students not experiencing learning difficulties. Extra support is always available in a kind and supportive manner. We attempt to provide many alternatives to mastering the Ontario curriculum. In addition, with help to minimize multiple test and assignments at the same time. Students are allowed to repeats assignmenst and tests for issues related to their IEP.

The process approach to teaching beginner writing aims to get students writing “real things” as much as possible and as soon as possible. The goal is to create the right environmental conditions to encourage a love of writing and a motivation to write well. With children invested in the writing process -- through assignments children find meaningful -- students are then given feedback on how they can improve.

A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      KEYSTONE SCHOOL

Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

      CHISHOLM ACADEMY

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.

While students join classes on campus, they are also offered independent courses. This allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and helps them to improve their time management skills. Students have the opportunity to engage in class discussions and interact with one another throughout independent courses.

      CHISHOLM ACADEMY

All students learn differently so it is our goal to taech differently. Our teachers thoroughly know the IEP of each student and pace them accordingly to their needs.

      KEYSTONE SCHOOL

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

      KEYSTONE SCHOOL

Our aim is to encourage students to take action and become life-long learners in order to make the world a better and more peaceful place. Through their school years, they become internationally–minded inquirers and thinkers, who ask questions and seek their own answers from both local and global perspectives. At Keystone, by nurturing students’ natural curiosity, we foster a love for learning.

      CHISHOLM ACADEMY

Without question, Chisholm Academy is one of the most supportive environments for students with learning weaknesses or emotional concerns. We expect all students to do their best but we minimize cempetition. Awards are given for academic performance but also for determination, working with others, sports, drama, art etc. When kids feel good, they learn better!
