When parents are considering a school, they’re right to ask about instructional styles, teaching, programs, assessment. Those are important. Though when we pick up our kids from school each day, we’re not thinking about those things. Instead, we ask: “How was your day?” Maybe we ask it reflexively, but when it comes to how children learn, that’s actually where the rubber really meets the road. Kids learn best in a consistent, supportive, personal, safe, and community-focused environment. Providing that kind of environment is what forms a basis for all of the work at Kingsley. When they say “thrive” they mean it in the broad sense—gaining a strong academic foundation—but also in the sense of having fun, gaining confidence, and finding a voice within a community of peers. The programs are strong, the teaching staff seasoned, and the school has had consistent success for more than three decades. For the families that enroll here, all of that is important. Likewise, the strength and focus of the learning environment is often, quite rightly, a principle draw. After all, a child's ability to thrive in life begins in having a good day, today.

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.
Reggio Emilia programs are offered by some schools at the preschool and elementary level. The approach aims to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of projects (as opposed to activities or lessons): teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. They can last from a few days to the whole year. The study of Social Sciences is an integral part of the Appleby curriculum. The Language and Culture Department consists of French, German, Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic. French is a compulsory subject from Middle One to Upper Two (2D or 3U) and students are required to take an additional international language of their choice in Upper One. A highlight of the program is the Middle Two International Languages course. These programs have an equal emphasis on receptive and creative learning.
Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
MUSIC: Students receive four weekly periods of specialist music instruction and perform at two concerts per year. They begin recorder in Grade One, read music by Grade Two/Three, and join Band in Grade Four/Five. In choir, they learn proper singing techniques and sing in parts. We take fun music field trips, including a bus trip to the symphony every April. Students have the opportunity to join a lunchtime ukulele club or take private lessons after school in singing, piano, guitar, ukulele, and theory. ART: Our youngest students begin to build confidence in their artistic abilities while being exposed to the elements of design. As the students mature they work on expanding their knowledge of the elements of design and applying them to individual and group projects.
The performing arts - dance, drama, and music - present opportunity and challenge as individual academic courses. Appleby’s classrooms are designed to enable exceptional teaching and engaged learning, seamlessly integrating wireless capabilities with EPSON projectors and interactive televisions in the classroom. Appleby classrooms provide a modern integrated learning and lecture environment complete with audio, video, and programmable lighting all controlled through a touch panel. While faculty can teach from anywhere in the classroom, mobile seating allows for flexible seating arrangements, supporting collaborative learning, as well as independent, student-centred lesson design. Innovation plays a key role in the Appleby experience. Today, the majority of student school work is accessed, completed and submitted on their pen-based Fujitsu tablet. Kingsley offers both a half-day and full-day kindergarten program. Our play-based (Reggio Emilia-inspired) class offers many avenues for our young learners to thrive. Our small class sizes allow for individual attention and a balance of teacher-led lessons as well as time for each child to explore on their own and with peers. Our enriched curriculum consists of French, music, and physical education classes taught by specialty teachers beginning in kindergarten.

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
Our school approach is to meet each child from the place of their development and work from there. We believe in a differentiated approach for all children at our school. Classes are teacher led, and differentiation then applied.

Rigorous
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

Academics at Appleby are based on a rigorous university preparatory curriculum. A diverse range of required components provides students with stimulating challenges and the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and values. The achievement: preparation for university and life. Upon graduation students earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and the Appleby College Diploma. In addition to the OSSD requirements, the Appleby College Diploma has even more rigorous academic and significant co-curricular requirements. Appleby is also the first boarding school in North America to offer an integrated global education programme culminating with the Appleby College Diploma with Distinction in Global Leadership.

At Kingsley we believe in partnering with our parents. If a child is demonstrating learning difficulties we make sure to bring this to the parents attention. We work together to find the right solution for the family that we are able to support as a school. Families often have a team in place that we will work with, and if appropriate to our school environment as a whole, we welcome them into the school as support for the child.
Appleby College is dedicated to providing supports and accommodations to students who have received a medical diagnosis related to their learning exceptionalities and/or mental health and wellness. The focal point of these supports is the school’s Student Success Centre (SSC) which provides the necessary supports for those students to have access to official accommodations: those with a Learning Difference (LD) in Reading, Writing or Mathematics, Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Stress and Anxiety, Executive Functioning, English Language Learners (ELL) and other medical conditions. The SSC also supports those students who have suffered head traumas or concussions and are on Appleby’s Return to Learn (RTL) Protocol.

As the first step in the application process please complete the online application form (https://appleby.myschoolapp.com/app#login/apply). Please note, new applicants will be asked to create an account before proceeding to the application form. If you are a returning applicant, the login method previously used when submitting your Appleby College application has changed as Blackbaud - Appleby's education management system (BBK12) provider, has phased out its existing login method. Returning applicants are asked to contact [email protected] and a member of the Appleby Technology Team will be happy to assist you.
It should take you approximately 5-10 minutes to complete the online form. Once you have completed the form you will be asked to pay the school's non-refundable application fee. For Canadian residents the fee is $200, for International residents the fee is $300.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT (IF APPLICABLE): To help us ensure that the applicant (upon condition of acceptance) receives the appropriate support needed to have a successful experience at Appleby, a copy of their last assessment is appreciated if available.
ESL LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT (IF APPLICABLE): If the applicant is a non-native English speaker applying for grades 10 through 12 please provide your TOEFL, or IELTS test date. For non-native English speakers applying for grades 7 through 9 please provide your TOEFL Jr or iTEP test date.
