    Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

    Academic
    Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher.     LA VILLA MONTESSORI SCHOOL

    La Villa rightly prides itself in offering a very authentic presentation of the Montessori method, and for many families that is a primary draw. As such, students are engaged in an active, hands-on, cooperative environment, where the core curriculum is delivered in consort with a growing understanding of their place in the community of the school and beyond. Close attention is given to the acquisition of skills as well as interpersonal, physical, and emotional development.

    STRATHCONA-TWEEDSMUIR SCHOOL

    Strathcona-Tweedsmuir became a school, in that name, in 1971, though it’s history stretches back more than a century. It is essentially an amalgamation of three schools that excelled in different ways: St. Hilda’s School for Girls, Strathcona School for Boys, and Tweedsmuir, a girls’ school. The current school motto, Nil Nisi Optimum, “nothing but the best,” was originally used by Tweedsmuir, as was the black watch uniforms—in that and other traditions that remain in place reflect the founding schools long, shared histories.
     
    The amalgamation came at a time of economic growth due to a boom in oil and gas exploration in the region. Each school was outgrowing its footprint, and so looked to combining forces. The world, too, was changing, and the move to a co-ed academic atmosphere was equally emblematic of the time. The newly minted Strathcona-Tweedsmuir also moved to a sizable parcel of land, where the school remains today.
     
    In time, the school would continue to grow its curricular offerings, including advance placement courses, adoption of Round Square, and the growth of the International Baccalaureate program. STS was also an early adopter of digital technologies in the classroom. Those things are an expression of perhaps the most important tradition that STS expresses, namely that of looking ahead, being flexible, and working to adapt the program to student need. The ideal student is one who will thrive in large, vibrant, and challenging academic environment.

    Message

             La Villa Montessori School came to fruition after years of imagining what the ideal environment would be like for my own children. I had come to truly understand the African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child" in order to provide the most positive and healthy environment for the children to thrive in every way. In Latin, the word Villa (Villam) refers to a farm or village and so it became La Villa Montessori School and the very essence of our community. After our first year of operating in 2015, I saw that having a strong cohesive community between the parents and staff at La Villa being a pillar of support and guidance for the children in our care.  We continue to provide the highest level of care and compassion for the children while fostering a trust and support with our parents. 

    As one of a handful of internationally recognized Montessori schools in Canada following AMI’s standards of quality and authenticity, we are very proud to have this distinction to support and grow the Montessori movement around the world.

    • Exploration beyond the classroom is not "extra" at STS. It's essential. We call these studies "co-curricular" rather than "extra-curricular". We believe our robust co-curricular program contributes to the poise and confidence of our students. The program is also an important part of what creates strong connections between students, and with the faculty. The combination of academics, options and co-curriculars give your child the chance to satisfy their curiosity and broaden their horizons in unexpected ways. While our teacher-led co-curriculars are energizing and mind-opening, they're also an opportunity to make strong connections with regular class studies. Faculty are intentional in strengthening coursework through co-curriculars. They are also quick to recognize when a student's interest is piqued during class, and will guide the student to a fitting co-curricular to further the classroom experience.
