Luther College High School was established in 1913 as a boys’ boarding school, and with just 32 students that inaugural year. Girls were first admitted in 1920, and over the years there have been other changes, too. Today the population is predominantly day students, though there is still a sizable boarding program. The High School campus completed a $18.3 million dollar expansion in 2014 which includes a new performance stage, three new classrooms (two of which are dedicated to fine arts), a gymnasium and student fitness training centre, a student commons, and upgrades to existing structures. The school also has fully renovated science laboratories and extensively upgraded on-campus dormitories. The motto “Quality Education in a Christian context” reflects an emphasis on the whole person—intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and physically—within a progressive Christian context. The values that provide a foundation for the program are rightly a draw. The ideal student is one who can thrive in an active, diverse school community, and who is intending to proceed to post-secondary studies after graduation.
Having been founded in 2002, Greenwood is a relatively young school, though has grown in response to the needs of the families that enroll here, and the place that it has within the academic mosaic of the city. It still thinks of itself as a small school, and the lived experience is personal and close-knit. That said, at 500 students, it’s certainly not tiny, and the curricular and extracurricular programs benefit from the size. The current facility, opened in 2016, is an apt expression of the goals of the school, as well as the families that support it. It includes flexible learning spaces and up to date athletic and arts spaces. Greenwood, in some sense, still flies a bit below the radar in the public consciousness, though given the success and growth it’s experienced, that won’t last long. The ideal student is one able to thrive within an active, academically oriented learning environment.

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.
Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Luther College High School exceeds the curriculum established by the Government of Saskatchewan. In addition to the required courses, Luther students must take more math in Grade 9, a second English class in Grade 11 and a course in Christian Ethics for each year of enrollment. Access to Greenwood's Student Success Centre (SSC) is included in each student's tuition fees. After reviewing a psychoeducational report and seeking parent/guardian and teacher input, we may recommend that a student with a learning difference carry a reduced course load so they can access SSC support. Students who do so receive a timetabled period in the SSC where they earn a Learning Strategies credit. Grade 12 students in need of SSC support can enrol in the Transition Skills Program, a non-credit course.

Greenwood's assessment of student-applicants emphasizes character, personality, academic readiness and interest in personal growth. Among the questions we consider are the following: • Does the applicant have the academic ability to complete the requirements leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma? • Do the applicant and their family have values and experience or inclinations that are consistent with Greenwood’s ‘whole person’ approach to education? • Is the applicant involved in the school life of their current school and in extra-curricular activities outside of school, and will they contribute in a positive way to the Greenwood community? • What is the character of the applicant? Is the applicant supportive of others? How has the applicant dealt with previous challenges and opportunities? • Is the applicant academically and otherwise engaged in life? Are they curious, interested in learning and excited about trying new experiences?
Applying to Greenwood involves the following steps:
All applicants are required to complete the Character Skills Snapshot (CSS), administered by the Enrollment Management Association. This online tool examines seven essential character qualities or “non-cognitive” attributes of individual students. Research shows that these qualities are the ones that independent schools feel are most important to nurture in their students. The CSS takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
