    Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher.     LUTHER COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

    Luther College High School was established in 1913 as a boys’ boarding school, and with just 32 students that inaugural year. Girls were first admitted in 1920, and over the years there have been other changes, too. Today the population is predominantly day students, though there is still a sizable boarding program. Luther College has just completed a huge capital campaign focused on developing the school’s physical plan. Completed in 2015, it added over 40,000 square feet of space, including a new gymnasium, common spaces, and media labs. The curriculum is taught through a Christian lens, and annual events highlight the Lutheran tradition, including the candlelight services that mark Advent. The ideal student is one who can thrive in an active, diverse school community, and who is intending to proceed to post-secondary studies after graduation.

    THE GILES SCHOOL

    The Giles School provides an enriched language immersion program from preschool through the middle grades. The French program starts in preschool, and a Mandarin program begins in grade 1 with a period a day spent in an immersive Mandarin environment. It's perhaps safe to say, in terms of language learning—both in terms of when immersion is introduced, as well as providing multilingual immersion—the program is the only one of its kind in Canada. Classes are small, and academics are rigorous, covering the entire core curriculum and then some. The ideal student is one who can benefit from enrichment and who will thrive within a play-based, curiosity-driven environment.

    Dr. Mark Anderson is the Principal, along with two other administrators, Vice Principal of Academics, Renee Wilkinson and Vice Principal of Student Life, Shawn Stieb.

    What does learning look like? For me, it mirrors the motto of the Giles School. It should awaken the mind , quicken’ the spirit and stir the heart. The Giles community is a deliberately small school that fosters an inclusive, innovative and international education. I am thrilled to be a part of a school team dedicated to supporting students in their quests to make incredible contributions in their school, work and family lives. As a lifelong learner, I have been inspired by many creative minds including Marie Curie (her selfless devotion to science); Martin Luther King, Jr. (his art of peaceful protest) and Gene Roddenberry (the Star Trek genius, who shares my birthday).

      The academic program emphasizes traditional core subjects while incorporating innovative approaches and modern programs. Luther College High School exceeds the curriculum established by the Government of Saskatchewan. In addition to the required courses, Luther students must take more math in Grade 9, a second English class in Grade 11 and a course in Christian Ethics for each year of enrollment. The Luther school year is made up of two semesters. Students are allowed to take a maximum of six courses per semester. At every grade level, there are certain compulsory courses students must pass. Students may also choose optional courses to fulfill the requirements for their Saskatchewan Grade 12 diploma. A dedicated teaching staff challenges students to excel and discover their gifts. Our well educated faculty only teaches in their major or minor disciplines, and most possess qualifications that far exceed standard requirements.

      The Giles School has created a strong program that supports infinite possibilities for growth and development. Founded on the concept of early enriched learning within a bilingual setting, the academics at The Giles School challenges students with enriched standards. Students engage in a fully French immersion setting from PK to grade 2; mandarin programming begins in grade 1. Students experience extensive field trips and benefit from artists in residence. Families will have an opportunity to be co-learners with their children when we embark upon our first trip to go the the NASA Pathfinders Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama in March of 2020.       A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

      A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus.       The Giles School is built on a foundation that supports being international, innovative and inclusive. Students and staff come from many different backgrounds and by working in a small class setting, they are able to have a supportive learning experience where the teacher is in regular contact with the students and his or her work. We survey our students, staff and fparents each year to be sure we are making a difference in their lives.       The Giles School offers a special leadership program that focuses on the multiculturalism, character education and service learning. Given our school aims to support a French and English bilingual culture, it is important to pay attention to cultures internationally. Service learning, therefore, is where character is applied at the school, local and global levels. The Giles Leadership course aims to prepare young people for success in high school, college, work and life. Students work with The Leader in Me, as well as the Leadership for Dummies texts, resources that will serve them throughout their lives.

    • Luther Invitational Tournament (LIT) LIT 68 is February 6 - 8, 2020 The Luther Invitational Tournament (LIT) is the longest running high school tournament in Canada. It began in 1953 on the initiative of John Chomay, the senior boys basketball coach and athletic director. LIT is a student-run tournament, lasting three days in February. This annual tournament is one of Luther's most well-known athletic initiatives and cherished traditions. This prestigious tournament is highly regarded for promoting sportsmanship, respect, hospitality and high-level competition. In 2016, LIT was inducted into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame. Teams from across western Canada are invited to participate each year.
    • The Candlelight Services are a musical celebration of Advent composed of lessons and carols presented by the choristers and instrumentalists of Luther College High School.     The Giles School adheres to a first-come, first-served admissions philosophy.

    We do not pre-screen children entering our school from the Pre-K level through Grade 1 on the basis of standardized tests or any other form of evaluation. We believe that when children in the early years are placed in a highly stimulating academic environment infused throughout with strong emotional sustenance, they will thrive, regardless of their initial aptitudes. Students who wish to transfer to The Giles School from Grade 2 on must fulfill minimum French language criteria and join us for a French language ability evaluation before being considered for our programme. Our goal is to ensure that every student who enters The Giles School programme will learn consistently and with confidence, achieving the same level of excellent fluency as his/her peers.
