Northstar isn’t your average Montessori school, in part because of its size—with an annual student population of 300, it’s a fair bit larger than the average—as well as its resources. The school was founded in 1996, though has grown its programs considerably in the intervening decades. There are some things that understandably stand out, such as the training pool, which is a recent addition, though they only underscore a more general awareness of the broad range of programming and facilities throughout the school. There are lots of bells and whistles, all of them welcome, though the core program is here too, with a fidelity to the Montessori method as demonstrated through CCMA accreditation. The program is offered from preschool through Grade 8, allowing families a consistency of approach and experience through the primary and elementary years.
View full reportFounded in 1909, LCC has a long tradition and a reputation to match. The list of alumni includes some shining lights of Canadian arts, letters, politics, business, and academics. There is a sense of place, and it’s considerable—students feel that they are participating within something larger than themselves. Of course, LCC has evolved over the years, though adaptations have been considered and orderly. A bilingual program for the primary grades was adopted in the early 1990s. The school became fully coeducational in 1995. The International Baccalaureate programme, too, is relatively new. Families are attracted to the traditions of the school, and the dedication to adapting to meet the needs of students. LCC continues to provide an example both of the value of looking ahead, developing programs that will meet the evolving needs of students, and with an eye to the kinds of academic, professional, and social environments students will encounter in their post-secondary careers and beyond.

"The most surprising feature about our school is our all-season indoor pool. This is part of the physical education program and students ages 3 1/2 to 12yrs are provided swim lessons. Another feature our school has is a climbing wall. Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.
Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.
Some private schools offer International Baccalaureate (IB) programming. The "Diploma Programme" is offered to students in the final two years of high school, while the "Primary Years Programme" (ages 3 to 12) and "Middle Years Programme" (ages 11 to 16) serve as preparation for the diploma program.

Balanced Literacy
Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.

Clinical Depression This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. Muscular dystrophy Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals. | ||||
Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine. | ||||

The function of our school is to augment the development of each child – intellectually, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically so that the child may eventually emerge as a well-rounded independent adult. Students requiring supports outside of Northstar’s expertise will be supported through all avenues possible, including welcoming community partners and other professionals into the environment to help build a better understanding of the students’ learning needs. We will support both child and the family by meeting with all necessary persons to understand the child’s needs and to learn about and implement any individualized plans and accommodations that have been put forth.

A child coming from another Montessori school would be able to transition in our school easier as they are familiar with how the class is set up, the materials and how to work with it.
At LCC we aim to educate the child in mind, body and heart and, as such, admission considerations at our school extend beyond test results. We want to know the whole child. We seek diverse students who demonstrate potential, excitement for learning, and commitment. When we invite a student to join our school, we believe that it will be a mutually beneficial experience. We want the child to grow beyond their imagination and expect that their involvement in our community will strengthen the school as a whole.
Generally when we assess a child, we mainly focus on their language and math skills.
