    OAKVILLE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL (OCS)

    OCS was founded in 1982 to serve a need principally for a quality school that taught the Ontario curriculum through a Christian lens. Since, the school has built its reputation on precisely that: offering a Christian perspective on the core Ontario curriculum. The school has a strong community feel, a product to some extent of its size, though leadership has given close attention to developing instruction and extra-curriculars, including the development of a strong athletic program. The school continues to reflect its original mandate while also remaining agile, adopting new programs and practices to meet the needs of students in a changing world. 

    MACDONALD-CARTIER ACADEMY

    Macdonald-Cartier was formed in 1990 to offer a challenging, academic, bilingual program, and it’s been happily and successfully been doing it ever since. The student body is small, with just 60 students annually, which translates into a very responsive, student-centered approach to curriculum delivery. The intention is somewhat unique, namely to give students a strong preparation for high school with an eye to university admission. The feel, as the name implies, is very rooted in a sense of place, and in that the school is an expression of the cultural and historical life of the national capital region. Likewise, there are a wealth of resources located locally, and Macdonald-Cartier rightly makes very good use of them.

    Welcome to Oakville Christian School (OCS)! Our mission is “Nurturing Excellence in a Christ-centred Academic Environment”. Over the past thirty five years, OCS has experienced increasing success, combining Christian faith development with high academic standards.

    Oakville Christian School has a vibrant academic program that exceeds Ontario Ministry guidelines with programs in Athletics, French, Music and Art. Following the research-based School-wide Enrichment Model, OCS provides challenging high-end learning that is enjoyable for everyone. Our learning environment is supported by Smart board technology, a computer lab, a mobile laptop lab and two dedicated computers in every classroom. All students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of different sports, and OCS competitive teams have developed a high reputation for outstanding sportsmanship and skills in tournaments. Students are also given excellent opportunity for leadership activities among other students. In addition, participation in musical performances, drama, chapel presentations, interest clubs and community service provides students with the growth necessary to develop academically, physically, spiritually and socially.

    Families are attracted to the school because of the Christian environment, high academic standards, strong sense of community and the highly professional, experienced and dedicated teaching staff.     MCA was founded in 1990 to offer parents in the Ottawa area the option of a demanding academic program that would prepare their child in both the French and English languages. The program is designed to teach the students skills that will help them succeed in school and in life.

    Being a small school is a big advantage when you want to give quality instruction and teach skills that will serve the students for life. We present them academic and physical challenges that will encourage them to leave their comfort zone and truly begin learning.

    Our program has evolved to meet the demands of our Canadian society but our mission to teach the students how to learn has never changed.  The need to teach methods to improve their organizational skills and become responsible students is even more important today than it was when I founded the program in 1990.

    We specialize in working with students at the junior high school level. I believe that this is an age where we can  influence the child`s academic and life skills the most to prepare them for high school, university and beyond. Our students have always worked hard and played hard with a big smile on their faces.  Some things should never change!

      To guide our academic curriculum at OCS we use the Schoolwide Enrichment Model, which is a tool for total school improvement that allows each school to keep its unique characteristics, personality, and culture. It is a research-based model with roots in gifted education with goals to provide challenging high-end learning that is enjoyable for all students. The Schoolwide Enrichment Model at OCS is comprised of 3 main components – the total talent portfolio, curriculum modification techniques, and enrichment learning.

      MACDONALD-CARTIER ACADEMY

      The program is designed to prepare the student for his/her learning needs in high school and college or university. At MCA we specialize in teaching grade seven and eight students the basic learning skills that are not always mastered in elementary school but are essential for those who want to excel in high school and university. We carefully select the students who demonstrate average to above average academic abilities. In doing so, we can accelerate the academic program and teach the student the skills to become responsible and efficient learners and workers. All MCA teachers work on these four keys to learning: the ability to listen in a classroom setting; note taking; time management of homework and corrections; and, methods for exam preparation. The student will have post exam evaluations six times a year where he/she will choose and try different strategies learned in Educational Anthropology class to maintain or improve their academic progression.

        Pragmatism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes making learning relevant to students’ present-day experience.       Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

      At MCA we focus on middle school students and three facets of their development. The first is the academic facet that encompasses a challenging, fast-paced program. The second is the social facet where we encourage students to say \"bonjour\" and to be engaged, friendly and positive. The third facet is physical where we introduce students to a variety of challenging activities such as long distance cycling, canoe-camping and rock-climbing/zip lining. We find that the satisfaction of hard work combined with time for play can bring a smile to the face of a grade seven and eight student.

    This is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Children with ADHD may be hyperactive and unable control their impulses. Or they may have trouble paying attention. These behaviors can interfere with school and home life.

    A characteristic seen in people with learning disabilities such as Dysgraphia or Non-verbal LD. It can result in missing subtle differences in shapes or printed letters, losing place frequently, struggles with cutting, holding pencil too tightly, or poor eye/hand coordination.

    Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome).
    Asperger's Syndrome
    On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour.
    Down syndrome
    his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics.

    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy. These may include growth deficits, facial anomalies, and damage to the central nervous system, which can lead to cognitive, behavioural, and other problems.

    This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life.
    Clinical anxiety
    This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror.
    Suicidal thoughts
    This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life.
    Drug and alcohol abuse
    This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning.
    Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
    This is a disruptive behavioural disorder which normally involves angry outbursts, often directed at people of authority. This behaviour must last continuously for six months or more and significantly interfere with daily functioning.

    This is a condition of the central nervous system. It affects the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. Symptoms can include fatigue, loss of motor control, memory loss, depression, and cognitive difficulties.
    Cerebral palsy
    his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture.
    Muscular dystrophy
    Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals.
    Spina Bifida
    This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine.
    Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
    This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech.
    Blindness
    Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness."
    Deafness
    Hearing impairment, also known as "hearing loss," is a partial or total inability to hear. The degree of hearing impairment varies between people. It can range from complete hearing loss (or deafness) to partial hearing loss (meaning the ears can pick up some sounds).
    Cystic Fibrosis
    Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited genetic condition, which affects the body's respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. It affects young children and adults.

    We are a small school geared to preparing our students, through an accelerated program, for high school and beyond. Our staff does not have the expertise to help the student who is diagnosed with a learning disability.     Prior to acceptance, all students must successfully complete qualification examinations. Normally these examinations are taken in the fall of the year prior to entrance. Applicants must submit a copy of their most recent report card.

    Applicants will be interviewed by a MCA administrator. The interview is designed to determine the applicant's willingness to work within a disciplined environment, and to verify the accuracy of reports submitted.
