Pear Tree is young, and has all the attributes of youth: energetic, engaging, fun. The day program grew out of the Pear Tree education programs, and launched in 2016. So, it’s fresh, and indeed that’s an attraction. The feel is a great one, and that’s not to be underestimated—creating the right environment, the right feel, is important. With Pear Tree, it’s that vibrant feel that creates the first impression. The program is the definition of progressive, with small classes, hands-on instruction, and built around links across areas of the curriculum. Students are required to work collaboratively, solving problems together, and to engage creatively with each other and with technology. Activity is important, as is nutrition, which is just as it should be. The ideal learner is one who will thrive in an active, creative, small-group oriented environment.
View full report“It is something that belongs to the girls,” reads an editorial in the inaugural issue of the St. Margaret’s School Magazine, “their own particular property ... in which they can all share, and to which everyone may contribute.” That was in 1911, just a few years after the school was founded by three women who wanted to offer something, well, more—more support, better academics—and to allow girls to dream bigger dreams. While the editor was writing about the magazine—that’s what she’s referring to as the “property”—she could just as easily be writing about the school itself. Since the beginning, St. Margaret’s has been just that: a place where girls feel a sense of home, a place where they can share something of themselves and where their contributions are valued. While the school has grown over the years, including a move in 1970 to the current 22-acre property, that tradition has remained. St. Margaret’s was at the forefront of girls’ education when it was begun (in that first issue of the magazine there is a photograph of girls playing basketball, which would have been notable at the time) and it remains so today. It was the first all-girls STEM school in the country and a leader in that regard, as in 2019 when they hosted a STEM Leadership Conference, “Sustaining Our Future.” The campus is, frankly, gorgeous, sympathetic to the cultural and natural environment, and includes LEED certified facilities. Programs are challenging in all the right ways, inquiry-based, and instructors are keen to include lots of real-world experience, getting the learning out beyond the walls of the classroom. The accomplishments of the alumnae are a symbol of the strength of the school, and the list of notable graduates includes the full range of endeavour, from engineering, the sciences, to environmental activism and the arts.

A 'good school' isn't good enough. Children deserve the most complete, inclusive, and up-to-date form of education.
The traditional approach to teaching places students in homogeneous age groups. All twelve year olds in this room. All eight year olds in this room. They sit in desks facing the front and learn the core subjects one at a time for a set period of time each day. 45 minutes of math, followed by 60 minutes of English, followed by a short break, and then 45 minutes of science. Everything is compartmentalized and isolated.
This, quite frankly, has nothing to do with how we best learn.
That's why Pear Tree School is a different kind of private school.
Pear Tree School’s mission is to provide a complete, inclusive, and stimulating education that nurtures the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and ethical development of every student.
We aim to equip our students with the skills, knowledge, and values needed to lead fulfilling lives and make a positive impact on the world.
Working in partnership with teachers, families, and the wider community, we strive to create a supportive and dynamic learning environment that encourages active participation, critical thinking, and personal growth.
By combining academic excellence with a whole-child approach, we strive to inspire and empower our students to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens.
We are dedicated to ongoing growth and evolution, both as individuals and as a school, in order to continuously provide an education that meets the changing needs of our students and prepares them for success in all aspects of life.
That’s Pear Tree School.
We invite you to experience the difference.

Traditional
International Baccalaureate
Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Some private schools offer International Baccalaureate (IB) programming. The "Diploma Programme" is offered to students in the final two years of high school, while the "Primary Years Programme" (ages 3 to 12) and "Middle Years Programme" (ages 11 to 16) serve as preparation for the diploma program.
Pear Tree School embraces a holistic education model, distinguished by the Pear Tree Method, which merges academic rigor with real-world relevance. Our theme-based approach to the B.C. curriculum, crafted by Master's-educated directors and teaching faculty, is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills, ensuring students are well-prepared for the complexities of the future. Central to our approach is the integration of subjects through themes, allowing students to explore connections across disciplines and apply their learning in meaningful ways. We prioritize the physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being of our students, incorporating daily physical education, a nutritionist-designed hot lunch program, and a supportive, inclusive community environment. Our commitment to small class sizes ensures personalized attention, enabling each student to thrive. With a strong emphasis on global citizenship and environmental stewardship, Pear Tree School students engage in projects that encourage community involvement and a deep understanding of global issues. This comprehensive approach not only achieves academic excellence but also nurtures responsible, empathetic individuals equipped to contribute positively to society.
At St. Margaret’s School, we empower every girl to set her own course and shape her own future. We offer a rigorous STEM-focused curriculum: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and represents an inquiry-based method of teaching and learning. Traditional separations between subject areas are bridged to forge deeper exploration and understanding of broad topics. In this inquiry-based model, valuable attributes of creativity and critical thinking are emphasized. As an international centre for girls’ learning and leadership, we offer rich resources and challenges to support each student's development as an individual, and a global-minded citizen. Academics at SMS are amplified by extensive experiential learning offerings spanning leadership, service, and wellness/athletics to build up confidence, perspective, and life skills. A spirit of life-long learning is shared between students, families, and faculty: our annual professional development and family workshop series shares the latest scholarship in brain development, teaching methods, and educational trends. Through this innovative approach our curriculum evolves and continues to be relevant as we engage our entire community in issues affecting girls today.

These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
At Pear Tree School, our math approach is all about making numbers engaging and meaningful. We believe in learning by doing, so students tackle real-life problems that matter to them, like figuring out how much space is needed for a family pet or budgeting for a class field trip. Our teachers, all experts with advanced degrees, guide students through these challenges, ensuring each child gets the support they need to succeed and even surprise themselves with what they can achieve. We weave math into exciting themes, showing students the role numbers play in the world around them, from art to the environment. This way, math isn't just numbers on a page—it's a tool they use to explore their passions and understand their world better. Our goal? To ignite a love for learning that turns every student into a confident problem solver, ready to take on the future.
SMS strives to infuse students with confidence, enthusiasm, and a passion for mathematics. Through a rigorous program, students are provided a spectrum of opportunities to reach their full potential regardless of whether or not their career goals require high-level math for entry to university.
At Pear Tree School, we don't use traditional math textbooks. Instead, we create custom-made materials tailored to our math-in-context approach, ensuring a comprehensive and immersive learning experience that aligns with our themes and real-world application.

At Pear Tree School, our approach to teaching early reading is centered around cultivating a love for reading and building a strong foundation in literacy from the outset. We employ a balanced literacy approach, combining phonics for decoding words with whole-language methods that emphasize meaning and story comprehension. Our Masters-qualified educators use our engaging themes to make reading relevant and exciting. Through interactive read-alouds, shared reading experiences, and personalized reading activities, we ensure that each child is supported according to their individual learning pace and style. This nurturing environment encourages curiosity and a passion for exploration through books. Our goal is not just to teach students how to read, but to instill in them a lifelong love of reading and learning, setting the stage for their future academic success.

At Pear Tree School, our approach to teaching writing in the younger grades is centered on fostering creativity, expression, and a love for communicating ideas. We believe in nurturing each child's unique voice and ideas from the outset. Our method integrates the foundational skills of writing with our engaging, theme-based content that resonates with young learners. Through personalized and interactive activities, students learn to articulate their thoughts clearly and confidently. They engage in a variety of writing forms, from stories to reports and journals, all within a supportive environment that encourages experimentation and reflection. Our Masters-qualified educators, skilled in adaptive and differentiated instruction, ensure that every child progresses at their own pace, receiving the guidance and encouragement they need. The outcome is not just the development of writing skills but also the cultivation of creative thinkers and effective communicators, prepared for the academic challenges ahead.

Inquiry-based science emphasizes teaching science as a way of thinking or practice, and therefore tries to get students “doing” science as much as possible -- and not just “learning” it. Students still learn foundational scientific ideas and content (and build on this knowledge progressively); however, relative to expository science instruction, inquiry-based programs have students spend more time developing and executing their own experiments (empirical and theoretical). Students are frequently challenged to develop critical and scientific-thinking skills by developing their own well-reasoned hypothesis and finding ways to test those hypotheses. Projects and experiments are emphasized over textbook learning. Skills are emphasized over breadth of knowledge.
Science programs that balance expository and inquiry learning equally will likely have an equal blend of tests and experiments; direct, textbook-based instruction and student-centred projects.
At Pear Tree School, our approach to teaching science from Kindergarten through Grade 12 emphasizes hands-on, experiential learning, seamlessly integrated within our theme-based approach to the B.C. curriculum. We ground scientific exploration in real-world contexts, encouraging students to observe, inquire, and experiment as they engage with natural phenomena and technological advancements. By leveraging the Pear Tree Method, we ensure that science education is not only interdisciplinary—blending math, technology, and the arts—but also deeply connected to societal and environmental issues, fostering a sense of responsibility and curiosity about the world. Our educators, equipped with Master's degrees, guide students through a discovery process that nurtures critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing them for the complexities of the future. This progressive, holistic approach cultivates a lifelong passion for science among students, empowering them to become informed, innovative contributors to society.

In social justice- inspired programs, literature is not viewed as something to be merely decoded and “appreciated”: rather, it is viewed as a catalyst to social action. Choice of texts tends to favour contemporary works. If a classical text is used, it’s often in the context of social deconstruction: students are asked to critically examine possible prejudices and historical narratives inherent in the work. Like in traditional literature programs, students are often asked to engage in class discussion and critical essay writing, but more time might also be devoted to cooperative group projects and personal reflections. The goal is to teach students to think critically about what they read, while becoming intellectually and physically engaged in the social issues pertaining to their wider community.
These literature programs draw in equal measure from “Traditional” and “Social Justice” programs.
Our literature curriculum is designed to evolve with students as they progress through grades, offering a rich tapestry of genres, cultures, and perspectives. From the early years to the upper grades, we emphasize critical thinking, empathy, and global awareness through literature. In lower grades, we introduce students to a diverse range of stories and poems that foster imagination, moral understanding, and a love of reading. As students advance, the complexity of texts increases, incorporating classic literature, contemporary works, and non-fiction, all chosen to challenge students and expand their horizons. Discussions, analytical writing, and creative projects encourage deeper engagement with texts, enabling students to articulate their interpretations and connect literary themes to their own lives and the world around them. This comprehensive approach ensures that by the time students graduate, they are not only proficient in literary analysis but also appreciate literature’s power to inspire, challenge, and transform.

Expanding Communities
The Expanding Communities approach organizes the curriculum around students’ present, everyday experience. In the younger grades, students might learn about themselves, for example. As they move through the grades, the focus gradually broadens in scope: to the family, neighbourhood, city, province, country, and globe. The curriculum tends to have less focus on history than Core Knowledge programs.

At Pear Tree School, our approach to teaching Social Studies from K-7 is deeply rooted in our holistic educational philosophy, encapsulating the integration of theme and project-based learning with a global perspective. Each grade explores a range of interconnected themes that are designed to not only cover but transcend the BC Curriculum, ensuring a rich, multi-dimensional understanding of social, cultural, environmental, and historical contexts. Through hands-on projects, collaborative research, and critical discussions, students actively engage with real-world issues, developing a strong sense of global citizenship and environmental stewardship. Our aim is to foster empathetic, informed students who appreciate diversity, understand the complexity of societal structures, and are motivated to contribute positively to their communities. By embedding technology, arts, and physical education into our Social Studies curriculum, we offer a dynamic, interdisciplinary learning experience that prepares students to navigate and shape an ever-changing world.

Pragmatism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes making learning relevant to students’ present-day experience. Assignments tend to centre around projects and tasks rather than argumentative essays; these projects will often have a “real-world” application or relevance. There might be more of a social justice component to a pragmatic program, though that isn’t always the case. Subjects like history and philosophy are still covered/offered, but they play a less prominent role in the overall program than in the case of perennialism. The social sciences (contemporary geography, sociology, psychology, etc), meanwhile, might play a more prominent role in pragmatic programs. The key goals are to make learning progressive and relevant, while teaching students real-life skills and critical thinking.
These programs represent an equal balance between the perennialist and pragmatic approach to teaching the humanities and social sciences.
Our approach to humanities and social sciences is centered around an immersive, interdisciplinary methodology that bridges traditional boundaries to create a rich, cohesive learning experience. We employ The Pear Tree Method, which integrates theme and project-based learning with a critical, global perspective. Through this lens, students explore complex societal, cultural, environmental, and historical issues, connecting academic knowledge to real-world contexts. Our curriculum is designed to not only meet but exceed BC Curriculum standards, fostering deep, critical thinking and a profound understanding of the human experience across time and space. Interactive projects, collaborative research, and technology integration are hallmarks of our program, encouraging students to become active participants in their learning journey. We aim to cultivate empathetic, informed citizens who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and passion to contribute meaningfully to a diverse, interconnected world.
We believe in developing the whole student / whole girl and therefore offer an equal balance of perennialism and pragmatism in our humanities and social science program. We focus on teaching big ideas through critical thinking, and logic to support the inquiry-based learning approach here at SMS. We also provide hands-on, real-world learning opportunities through simulations, field trips, and expert guest speakers. In this way students can apply, create true meaning from, and connect more deeply to the content, with the goal of creating informed, curious, and active citizens.

The communicative method of language acquisition emphasizes the use of the target language in authentic contexts. The approach commonly features interactive group work, games, authentic texts, and opportunities to learn about the cultural background of the language. Drills and quizzes may still be used, but less frequently than with the audio-lingual method.
These programs feature an equal blend of the audio-lingual and communicative styles of language instruction.
At Pear Tree School, starting in Grade 2, students embark on an exciting journey into French studies, where language learning is seamlessly woven with cultural exploration. We believe that truly understanding a language goes beyond memorizing vocabulary and grammar; it involves immersing oneself in the rich tapestry of the culture that speaks it. Our method integrates language lessons with cultural insights, engaging students with authentic uses of French, traditions of French-speaking communities, and the unspoken language of gestures. This holistic approach not only enhances linguistic skills but also fosters a deep appreciation and respect for diversity, preparing our students to be global citizens who can communicate effectively and empathetically across cultures.
Our International English Language (IEL) program prepares students to graduate confident in the English language and to achieve success at universities and colleges in Canada, the US, and other parts of the world. Depending on their English ability, international students may begin the program in dedicated IEL classes or enter regular classes with additional support. Progress through the IEL Program is flexible and dependent on student achievement. Each student is provided with a level of support matching her individual needs and abilities, and each student advances through the program at her own pace. Classes are taught by experienced English Language teachers who teach every subject from an IEL perspective. This means the challenge of learning English does not impede success in other subjects. IEL classes are designed to help students adapt to a Canadian classroom and develop learning strategies that prepare them to succeed in the regular classroom.

The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
At Pear Tree School, fine arts are not subjects; they are a vital part of our holistic educational ethos, seamlessly woven into every aspect of our program. Our students engage with the fine arts continually, enriching their learning experience and fostering a deep appreciation for artistic expression. To ensure a rich and diverse exposure to the arts, we collaborate with external professionals who bring specialized skills into our classrooms, from visual arts to music and drama. These experts complement our classroom teachers' efforts, allowing students to explore a wide range of artistic mediums. Importantly, all arts education at Pear Tree is contextually integrated, ensuring that students understand and appreciate the relevance and application of their artistic endeavors. This approach not only enhances creativity and critical thinking but also ensures that the arts remain a meaningful and enduring part of our students' lives.
Starting from our youngest girls in Early Learning, arts education is a priority at all levels of the school, developing appreciation, skill, and creativity. The Arts Program at SMS offers outlets for self-expression and the development of creative interests. It also encourages appreciation for art and builds awareness of art in everyday life. There is an intimacy of knowledge that comes through the study of art; students learn how to observe, listen, and become more thoughtful and reflective. There are a variety of opportunities for performance throughout the year, both within the school and in the community including adjudicated festivals. Each year in the month of May, we celebrate the arts with Fine Arts Week, which involves days of back-to-back events including dramatic productions, an art show, and performances by the choir and band.

Effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy through the curriculum. However, this is not a dominant focus.
At Pear Tree School, technology is thoughtfully woven into our theme-based curriculum, serving as a dynamic tool to enhance learning, creativity, and productivity. Rather than being an end in itself, technology is employed to deepen understanding, facilitate innovative problem-solving, and foster digital literacy. From interactive software that brings math concepts to life to digital storytelling platforms that enrich language arts, we ensure technology complements our hands-on, theme-based approach to education. In early grades, technology use is moderate, reflecting our emphasis on developmental appropriateness and the value of tangible experiences. As students progress, they engage more deeply with digital tools, learning to research, create, and communicate effectively in a digital world. Our aim is for students to emerge not just as consumers of technology but as proficient, ethical, and critical users, prepared for the technological advancements of the future.
SMS students are welcomed to on campus maker labs and coding camps as well as encouraged to participate in advanced competitions where they develop technology based solutions for real world problems.

At Pear Tree School, our daily Physical Education Program is directly tied to our whole-child education approach. Through our Physical Education Program we develop your child's academic, social-emotional and physical performance every school day. Physical + Improved physical fitness + Skill and motor skills development Socio-Emotional + Teaches self discipline + Facilitates development of student responsibility for health and fitness + Influence moral development, leadership, cooperate with others + Stress reduction – an outlet for releasing tension and anxiety + Strengthened peer relationships + Improve self-confidence and self-esteem + Respect - for your body, classmates and teammates + Experience in setting goals Academic + Subject integration (science, math, social studies) + Through sports, we study about physiology, psychology, nutrition, problem solving, and strategy + Exercise helps to strengthen and stimulate your brain. Increased fitness = improved academics
The benefits of an active and balanced lifestyle are well documented: students who are active on a daily basis are healthier and perform better academically than their inactive peers. Physical activity is essential to the overall health and wellness of our students and an integral part of each student’s learning experience. There is truly something for everyone and every level of ability: opportunities to compete, play on a team for fun or participate in recreational activities. SMS provides opportunities for daily physical activity through physical education, athletics teams, club sports, intramurals, house challenges and outdoor recreation.
Academic
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

At Pear Tree School, our Early Years Program marks the beginning of a child's continuous K-12 journey through The Pear Tree Method. Our complete approach ensures that from the earliest stages, your child is immersed in an educational experience that doesn’t differentiate by age but is tailored to their individual developmental stages. Emphasizing a holistic development model, we blend literacy and numeracy with critical thinking, creativity, and real-world applications, rather than focusing solely on conventional subjects. Diverse themes and projects, healthy food and daily physical education encourage well-rounded growth, aligning with our commitment to nurturing every aspect of a child's potential. This foundation sets the stage for a continuous, enriching educational path that is distinct to Pear Tree School.
A recognized leader in early childhood education (ECE), our unique pre-school curriculum focuses on STEM learning through outdoor exploration, play, and the leading methods from a variety of ECE philosophies. We focus on nurturing a love of learning through positive experiences, developing social skills, and building up each girl’s self-confidence. All these experiences come to together to provide a solid foundation for elementary school. Developed by a winner of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education, our program is led by experts holding advanced degrees in education and ECE. Youngsters enjoy a place where they are encouraged to learn and grow, often benefiting from relationships built with students from other grades.
Standard-enriched
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
At Pear Tree School, we adjust our teaching to fit each student's needs, using group work, creative tasks, and classes with mixed ages. This means every student learns at their own pace, in a way that's right for them, making learning more engaging and effective for everyone.
Multi-age classrooms in our International Language program allow students to advance at their own pace to ensure student success in both English language and subject courses. Independent study is promoted through our Program of Distinction and dedicated time the weekly timetable to pursue inquiry-based projects and areas of passion.
Rigorous
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
Pear Tree School fosters a vibrant academic culture centered on growth, curiosity, and resilience. Our expectations are not solely about traditional academic performance; we value the process of learning as much as the outcomes. We encourage students to embrace challenges, ask questions, and engage deeply with their subjects. Our educators create an inclusive environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth, promoting a mindset where effort and persistence are as celebrated as achievement. This approach nurtures self-motivated learners who pursue excellence through curiosity and resilience. Our culture is one where every student is supported to reach their full potential, fostering a community that thrives on mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to continuous improvement and holistic development.
For over 100 years, SMS has built an international reputation of high academic achievement, but that is only part of our story. Our extensive learning support program, guidance, experiential programs, and ability to tailor to individual learning needs helps each girl reaches her potential. Successful graduation and admission to university is actually a very short term goal for our students. By embedding in our students a an appetite for life-long learning, a love of service, philanthropy, healthy habits, and strong values we ensure each girl has the skills to succeed in her studies, career, and in life.
"We intentionally avoid all forms of public distinction between students in terms of academic performance."

At Pear Tree School, our developmental priorities are centered on shaping students into well-rounded, compassionate, and intellectually curious individuals. We aim to nurture critical thinkers and problem solvers who are prepared to tackle the challenges of the future. Our holistic approach emphasizes not only academic excellence but also social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and global citizenship. We foster a love for learning, creativity, and innovation, encouraging students to explore their passions and interests. Ultimately, we strive to develop students who are not only academically proficient but also emotionally intelligent, empathetic, and equipped with the 21st-century skills necessary to contribute positively to society and lead fulfilling lives.
When we talk to parents there’s a common thread to their hopes and dreams for their daughter: more important than marks, they want their daughters to be happy and confident in being themselves. A balanced approach is the only way to build strong girls: head, heart, spirit, and body. Our students are academically strong, creative, and critical thinkers; emotionally intelligent and confident individuals, capable of leading both themselves and others; socially aware and active citizens, motivated to change their community for the better; strong and active individuals, in tune with the joys of movement, sport, and wellness.

Pear Tree School prides itself on being an inclusive environment. We attract a tremendous range of families and demographics who all share our common goal for a progressive, whole-child education. Pear Tree does not receive any government funding, including special needs funding. This means that any specialized or intensive in-class support must be paid for by the family. Some aspects of our learning methodologies and requirements may be unrealistically challenging for students with certain levels of needs. This can include the need for strong literacy skills, executive functioning skills, collaborative skills, and critical thinking skills.
Our Learning Support team engages learners at the extremes of the learning spectrum, providing additional help in a skill or subject where a student is struggling, or creating enriched opportunities for exceptional students. The goal is to provide the support and challenges needed by each student individually so that they may experience success at their own level.
At Pear Tree School, we avoid the use of labels (e.g. 'gifted', 'ADHD', 'ESL', etc). We find that labels generally have a negative, long-term impact on students. Our learning method engages all forms of learners, while also challenging them to try other approaches. Our teachers are not specialised or trained in special needs or 'giftedness', nor do we qualify for funding for this.
Our Learning Support team is dedicated to providing the necessary support and challenges needed by each SMS student. We work closely with all prospective families during the admissions process to ensure they are choosing a school or program able to provide the right support for their child's learning needs, including students with learning disabilities.

At Pear Tree School, we seek students who not only embody curiosity, adaptability, collaboration, creativity, responsibility, and openness to growth but also deeply value being positive, kind, welcoming, encouraging, and inclusive. We view each class not just as a group of students but as a cohesive cohort where each member significantly impacts the class dynamics and the experiences of others: 1. Curiosity and a Love for Learning We look for students who are naturally curious about the world around them. They should have a genuine enthusiasm for exploring new ideas, asking questions, and engaging deeply with the learning material. This innate desire to learn drives their engagement with our theme and project-based curriculum, fostering a lifelong love for education. 2. Adaptability and Resilience Success at Pear Tree School requires students to be adaptable and resilient. Our innovative approach to education—The Pear Tree Method—encourages students to navigate through interdisciplinary themes, which differs from traditional subject-based learning. Students who thrive are those who adapt to new challenges with a positive attitude and view setbacks as opportunities for growth. 3. Collaboration and Communication Our school places a strong emphasis on developing 21st-century skills, among which collaboration and communication are key. We seek students who are willing to work cooperatively in diverse groups, share ideas respectfully, and listen to the perspectives of others. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, enable students to contribute meaningfully to group projects and discussions. 4. Creativity and Problem-Solving Pear Tree School values creativity and the ability to think outside the box. Students who are successful in our environment often approach problems with innovative thinking and are not afraid to try unconventional solutions. They take joy in the creative process, whether in academic projects, arts, or extracurricular activities. 5. Responsibility and Ethical Awareness We look for students who demonstrate a sense of responsibility towards their learning, their peers, and the wider community. An awareness of ethical considerations and a commitment to positive social impact align with our focus on global citizenship and environmental stewardship. Students who are mindful of their actions and their impact on the world will find a nurturing home at Pear Tree School. 6. Openness to Growth and Feedback A successful student at Pear Tree School is one who is open to personal and academic growth. They should see feedback as a valuable tool for improvement and be committed to self-reflection and continuous learning. Our educational approach supports students in developing a growth mindset, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the future. 7. Positivity and Kindness Our ideal student radiates positivity and kindness in every interaction within the school community. They approach learning and collaboration with a positive outlook, contributing to a supportive and uplifting classroom environment. Kindness, both in actions and words, is essential, as it fosters a sense of safety and belonging for all students. 8. Welcoming and Encouraging We value students who are welcoming to everyone, regardless of background or ability. A student who takes the initiative to include and encourage others, especially those who may feel marginalized or unsure, plays a critical role in building a cohesive and dynamic cohort. This welcoming nature ensures that every student feels valued and supported in their educational journey. 9. Inclusivity and Support Inclusivity is at the heart of Pear Tree School’s ethos. We look for students who actively support and advocate for an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and every voice is heard. They understand that each member of the community brings unique perspectives and strengths, and they actively contribute to creating a space where everyone can thrive. Admission Process In our admissions process, we assess not only the individual qualities of prospective students but also their potential to contribute to the positive, inclusive culture of their cohort. Through interviews, portfolio submissions, and interactions, we encourage families to share examples of how their child embodies these values of positivity, kindness, encouragement, and inclusivity. Our aim is to assemble cohorts where each student not only succeeds academically but also enhances the social and emotional well-being of their peers, creating a nurturing and dynamic learning environment. At Pear Tree School, we believe that a cohesive cohort enriched by diverse, supportive, and engaged students is fundamental to our holistic, forward-thinking educational approach. We are committed to fostering an environment where every student is empowered to make a positive impact, supporting not just their own growth but also that of their peers and the broader school community.
