Pear Tree is young, and has all the attributes of youth: energetic, engaging, fun. The day program grew out of the Pear Tree education programs, and launched in 2016. So, it’s fresh, and indeed that’s an attraction. The feel is a great one, and that’s not to be underestimated—creating the right environment, the right feel, is important. With Pear Tree, it’s that vibrant feel that creates the first impression. The program is the definition of progressive, with small classes, hands-on instruction, and built around links across areas of the curriculum. Students are required to work collaboratively, solving problems together, and to engage creatively with each other and with technology. Activity is important, as is nutrition, which is just as it should be. The ideal learner is one who will thrive in an active, creative, small-group oriented environment.
View full reportThere are many things that online instruction can offer that other schools simply can’t, including distance learning and remediation. Stephen Baker began developing the concept of the Virtual High School in 1995 with that in mind, and VHS gained accreditation—with it the ability to confer the OSSGD—in 2002. Courses can be started at any point, and students are able to work through the material at their own pace. There are many opportunities for interaction and collaboration with other students and instructors. At the end of the day, it’s a unique approach, and it has proven itself with a range of learners with a range of academic purposes.

The traditional approach to teaching places students in homogeneous age groups. All twelve year olds in this room. All eight year olds in this room. They sit in desks facing the front and learn the core subjects one at a time for a set period of time each day. 45 minutes of math, followed by 60 minutes of English, followed by a short break, and then 45 minutes of science. Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.
Math is a skills-based subject (in contrast to science and social studies, which are more knowledge-based). Math skills are to be used, not simply memorized. As such, at Pear Tree School, math skills embedded within themes; they are tied to social studies (quantities, statistics), science (weights, speeds, measurements), and business (financial literacy). As such, students at Pear Tree learn math in context. Math at our school is connected to real life and is truly meaningful. At the same time, working with real-life numbers means that it is challenging! Consequently, math at Pear Tree is more engaging and more challenging than traditional math classes.
The VHS Math Department aims to reach all learners by responding to their individual needs. Students have opportunities to learn through text, images, diagrams, and interactive activities. We model problem-solving in detailed examples and offer lots of opportunities to practice with structured exercises. Our formative activities allow students to gain valuable feedback from their teacher before completing graded assignments. Our assessments are not limited to traditional rote math problems. We also include opportunities to develop skills that prepare students for success in post-secondary studies and in the workforce. Students also have opportunities to write papers following the APA format, and create presentations that demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of concepts covered in their course.

Inquiry-based science emphasizes teaching science as a way of thinking or practice, and therefore tries to get students “doing” science as much as possible -- and not just “learning” it. In social justice- inspired programs, literature is not viewed as something to be merely decoded and “appreciated”: rather, it is viewed as a catalyst to social action. Choice of texts tends to favour contemporary works. If a classical text is used, it’s often in the context of social deconstruction: students are asked to critically examine possible prejudices and historical narratives inherent in the work. Like in traditional literature programs, students are often asked to engage in class discussion and critical essay writing, but more time might also be devoted to cooperative group projects and personal reflections. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). Fine arts are integrated into every aspect of our program. Therefore, Pear Tree School students are continually learning about and using fine arts. We often work with external professionals who are able to support our classroom teachers with specialised art skills. At the same time, our classroom teachers ensure that any art learned is done so in context to make it meaningful and useful!
Students in our art courses develop their creative skills as they learn and apply the concepts, styles, and conventions of various forms of fine art. This is accomplished through the appreciation, analysis, and performance of different artistic mediums in a range of creative disciplines, including drama, music, and visual arts. We encourage students to springboard from their interests and personality when approaching coursework and assessments. Effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy through the curriculum. However, this is not a dominant focus.
A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.
Technology is seamlessly integrated into all of our programs. We want our students to become adept at using technology in meaningful ways, i.e. for creativity and productivity. The use of technology increases as students reach higher grades. Obviously, in the younger grades, there is much less use, as there are other development priorities.
Because our courses are completed entirely online, VHS students are constantly developing and practicing the digital skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

Online physical education gives students the flexibility to not only work through the course in whatever order they prefer, but it also allows them to choose activities for assessments that best fit their individual skills and comfort level. Students demonstrate their understanding and abilities through a variety of assessment opportunities. When it comes to the physical part of online physical education, activity-specific skills and strategies are supported by video instruction. Students see the movements of a skill or activity prior to participation, and then submit a video of themselves performing it for assessment and feedback. Additionally, through the use of case studies and self-reflection, students learn to think creatively and critically about a number of issues related to healthy and active living.

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

Pear Tree School prides itself on being an inclusive environment. We attract a tremendous range of families and demographics who all share our common goal for a progressive, whole-child education. Pear Tree does not receive any government funding, including special needs funding. This means that any specialized or intensive in-class support must be paid for by the family. Some aspects of our learning methodologies and requirements may be unrealistically challenging for students with certain levels of needs. This can include the need for strong literacy skills, executive functioning skills, collaborative skills, and critical thinking skills.
VHS can implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs). An IEP is a document that outlines a student’s strengths, weaknesses, learning needs, and any accommodations to be made within a course. We implement any accommodations listed in an existing IEP that apply to our learning environment. Accommodations may include a reduced workload, simplified tasks and materials, or more time for learning and completing activities. Exam and test accommodations may include, but are not limited to, extra time to write an exam or test, the ability to scribe answers or read questions, memory aids for exams, breaks during exams, and no marks deducted for spelling. The assistance of other persons and the use of specialized equipment may also be required to accommodate the needs of the student.
At Pear Tree School, we avoid the use of labels (e.g. 'gifted', 'ADHD', 'ESL', etc). We find that labels generally have a negative, long-term impact on students. Our learning method engages all forms of learners, while also challenging them to try other approaches. Our teachers are not specialised or trained in special needs or 'giftedness', nor do we qualify for funding for this.
Whether a student has a clinically diagnosed learning disability or develops learning difficulties while enrolled at VHS, we can accommodate and respond to their individual needs. With self-paced courses, round-the-clock access to course content, and 18 months to finish, VHS students have the freedom to take as much time as they need to review content, take notes, and practice retention. Our courses present content a number of ways (text, audio, images, video, interactive activities) and include a built-in screen reader. When it comes to assessments, students may choose how they present their ideas (e.g. write a paper, give an oral presentation, create a visual). Additionally, we make accommodations for students who use assistive technologies in their learning.
