    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Preschool/K curriculum

    Montessori
Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

If you want to learn more about Montessori education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also check out our guide to Montessori preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.

    Academic
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    ROYAL CACHET MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Montessori can mean different things to different people, and programs and facilities can vary between schools. That said, if you knew very little about what Montessori is, Royal Cachet may well reflect the image that you would have in your mind. The school operates out of a dedicated building, purpose built to house the Royal Cachet program. That's a plus. Within it the administration seeks to provide a setting and a model of instruction that remains very close to the intentions and techniques outlined by Maria Montessori. This is very much the school for those looking for a very traditional, dedicated, consistent application of the Montessori method. The ideal student is one who thrives in a play-based, constructivist learning environment.

    THE GILES SCHOOL

The Giles School provides an enriched language immersion program from preschool through the middle grades. The French program starts in preschool, and a Mandarin program begins in grade 1 with a period a day spent in an immersive Mandarin environment. It's perhaps safe to say, in terms of language learning—both in terms of when immersion is introduced, as well as providing multilingual immersion—the program is the only one of its kind in Canada. Classes are small, and academics are rigorous, covering the entire core curriculum and then some. The ideal student is one who can benefit from enrichment and who will thrive within a play-based, curiosity-driven environment.

I am delighted to welcome you to The Giles School. As a mom of two boys myself, I know that one of the most important decisions a family makes, is choosing a school for their children. At The Giles School, we understand the care and thought that goes into selecting the right school for your child. That is why we want to share with you what makes our school so special and why our learning environment is like no other.

Through highly enjoyable and engaging learning experiences, students acquire the skills and knowledge as part of our world-class French Immersion Program where students develop as their own individuals through a broad range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities which include coding, Robotics, chess, and being part of our Leadership Program amongst many other activities. All of this is made possible by a strong partnership with our parents who are active in the school life.

All of our classroom teachers are highly qualified and continuously engage in professional development training to ensure standards are kept high. State-of-the-art technologies are integrated into our curriculum and classrooms to ensure our students are prepared for the future. iPads use for all of our Grades 1 to 6 students, and laptops for our Grades 7 to 8 students, securing that our students are “World Ready”.

Our differentiated approach to learning means lessons are planned by taking into account your child’s strengths and talents. Small class sizes and low student-to-staff ratios (6:1) mean that students can receive the individual attention they deserve, thus achieving excellent academic and personal development.

Your child will develop into a responsible global citizen guided by our school’s principles of being inclusive, innovative and international. Students are encouraged to be inquisitive and to play a part in their own learning, as well as being challenged, taking risks and given the opportunity to discover their abilities.

It is our firm ambition to ensure that our students who complete their education with us are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage of their education journey with the solid foundation of a character to succeed in life to match.

I encourage you to book a private tour and visit our campus. I will be pleased to welcome you and look forward to sharing the achievements of our school and our students. I know that you will sense the unique atmosphere here and will want your child to become a part of it.

    With best wishes,

Isabelle Faulkner - Principal of The Giles School

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      ROYAL CACHET MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.

      THE GILES SCHOOL

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

      ROYAL CACHET MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Royal Cachet Montessori Schools provide education based on the methodology developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. RCMS offers authentic Montessori programs and is licensed by MEDU. Our classes are directed by MACTE accredited Montessori teachers using a full spectrum of authentic Montessori training materials. The children manipulate these specialized training materials to learn and flourish.

      THE GILES SCHOOL

The Giles School has created a strong program that supports infinite possibilities for growth and development. Founded on the concept of early enriched learning within a bilingual setting, the academics at The Giles School challenges students with enriched standards. Students engage in a fully French immersion setting from PK to Grade 3. One-to-one French lessons for French beginners from Grades 1 to 8 are offered as part of the day tuition. Mandarin programming begins in JK. Baby yoga and Ballet lessons are integrated in the day schedule for PK to Grade 1. Students experience extensive field trips and benefit from artists in residence. Coupled with intense expectations, the Giles Community is committed to the whole child. Love and individualized attention ensures the well-being and success of each student. We aim to awaken the mind, quicken the spirit and stir the heart. Students in Grade 4 through 8 also take a weekly leadership course focusing on character education, the ideals of the United Nation and service learning.

The multi-age grouping is promoted in the pre-school classrooms since the younger students look up to and learn from their more senior associates. The more mature students re-enforce their learning, they become more out-going while assisting the younger students, and they take on leadership roles in the classroom.

The Montessori approach is to provide many training materials for the students to choose from and the supportive guidance of teachers to challenge the students to excel.

      THE GILES SCHOOL

The Giles School is built on a foundation that supports being international, innovative and inclusive. Students and staff come from many different backgrounds and by working in a small classroom setting, they are able to have a supportive learning experience where the teacher is in regular contact with the students and his or her work. We survey our students, staff and parents each year to be sure we are making a difference in their lives. We believe to be "World Ready", we must provide a wealth of experiences that includes a context for planning and implementing service learning projects. In this way we are both rigorous and supportive.

      THE GILES SCHOOL

The Giles School offers a special leadership program that focuses on the multiculturalism, character education and service learning. Given our school aims to support a French and English bilingual culture, it is important to pay attention to cultures internationally. Service learning, therefore, is where character is applied at the school, local and global levels. The Giles Leadership course aims to prepare young people for success in high school, college, work and life. Students work with The Leader in Me text book, resources that will serve them throughout their lives.

We offer open admissions because we believe every child can excel in our nurturing educational community.

    THE GILES SCHOOL

The Giles School adheres to a first-come, first-served admissions philosophy.

We do not pre-screen children entering our school from the Pre-K level through Grade 1 on the basis of standardized tests or any other form of evaluation. We believe that when children in the early years are placed in a highly stimulating academic environment infused throughout with strong emotional sustenance, they will thrive, regardless of their initial aptitudes. Students who wish to transfer to The Giles School from Grade 2 on, will be assessed on their French proficiency level.  One-to-one lessons may be added to support new French learners.  Our goal is to ensure that every student who enters The Giles School programme will learn consistently and with confidence, achieving the same level of excellent fluency as his/her peers.
