Sherwood Heights intends to give students a strong foundation for further study, granted through a traditional, content-based academic program. Expectations are clear and explicit, including a demonstrable facility with the core curriculum and the development of watertight study habits. For many families that culture—one in which social currency is gained through academics—is a primary draw. Extra-curricular programs augment the core areas of instruction. The ideal student is one who is academically inclined, operating at the top of their peer group, and looking for an environment that prizes all of that.

With a proven record of admission to competitive university programmes, Sherwood Heights provides a clear pathway to future success."
"At InnovOak School, we prioritize a well-rounded education that goes beyond traditional standards while integrating the innovations needed to prepare students for tomorrow's challenges. Our LifeREADY program fosters academic excellence, character development, critical thinking, and leadership skills. We carefully plan educational pathways to ensure students' future success, allowing parents to look back and proudly say, "What a remarkable young person they have become!""
"At Sherwood Heights, we combine academic rigour with personal attention, balancing traditional instruction with purposeful innovation. We emphasize mastery of core subjects through clear expectations and consistent daily practice, while integrating technology across the curriculum to build confidence and digital fluency. Our Careers-in-Focus and enrichment initiatives connect classroom learning to real-world applications, inspiring students to see purpose in their studies. Families consistently note that our blend of structure, enrichment, and warmth is what truly sets Sherwood Heights apart."
"InnovOak School distinguishes itself with a focus on both academic excellence and essential life skills, starting with the youngest learners. Its accelerated curriculum, including Singapore Math, ensures strong academic foundations. InnovOak’s LifeReady Program equips students with practical skills like managing finances, cooking, and personal branding, fostering independence from an early age. Beginning at 2.5 years old, students are introduced to foundational life skills alongside their academic development.
InnovOak sets itself apart through a blend of accelerated learning and personalized guidance. Its curriculum surpasses Ontario standards, building strong math and literacy skills. The school guarantees that by Grade 1, students will have mastered essential reading, writing, and math skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for ongoing success"
"At Sherwood Heights, our commitment to a strong academic foundation means we prioritize depth over breadth, focusing on the essentials—language, mathematics, science, and critical thinking—rather than following fleeting educational trends. This deliberate approach ensures that students build lasting knowledge and disciplined study habits. While our structured and rigorous environment may not suit families seeking a fully self-paced or alternative style of learning, our students thrive when they embrace high expectations, consistency, and personal accountability."
"At our core, we believe traditional educational values and academic rigor come with deliberate trade-offs. We prioritize foundational learning skills—such as critical thinking and perseverance—over simply rushing through the curriculum or focusing solely on content. This means students master how to learn, setting them up for long-term success as a person and learner. Our commitment to personalized learning and small class sizes means we deprioritize students as part of a large group, ensuring every student receives individualized attention. We foster creativity through inquiry-based learning, but less emphasis is placed on unstructured play as the primary learning method. Students prepare for future careers by integrating life skills and forward-thinking programs, choosing to prioritize real-world readiness over fleeting educational trends. By backward mapping from graduation, we focus on the end goal - ensuring that every student is equipped to thrive as a student and a person."
"Founded in 1989, Sherwood Heights began as a small, independent elementary school and has since grown into a thriving institution with two campuses serving students from Preschool to Grade 12. Over more than three decades, we have expanded our facilities, introduced new academic streams, and enriched our extracurricular programmes to support well-rounded student growth. Our high school facility features modern innovation labs, state-of-the-art science and art studios, and collaborative learning spaces that reflect our ongoing commitment to providing a forward-looking, dynamic education for every student."
"We are building a culture that will guide us into the next 100 years. With a mindset that blends the agility of a startup with the depth of traditional learning, we continuously reshape education to meet today’s needs while preparing students for the future. Unlike larger institutions, we ask, "Why not?" and "What do we tackle next?" allowing us to remake education where others haven’t, taking bold steps to improve the student experience.
Our key moments—from integrating Singapore Math and launching the LifeREADY program, to balancing inquiry-based learning with foundational skills—are driven by this approach. We assess, reflect, plan, and act with the speed of a startup, keeping us ahead in education.
Our location in the innovation and historical district reflects this fusion of tradition and innovation. We tackle new areas and address what others should have, setting a lasting culture focused on personalized learning and real-world readiness for future success."
"Students who thrive at Sherwood Heights are motivated learners who embrace challenge and structure. They approach their studies with curiosity, responsibility, and a genuine desire to achieve their personal best. Within our supportive and disciplined environment, they learn that effort, respect, and achievement go hand in hand. At Sherwood Heights, students value a culture where academic excellence is celebrated alongside creativity, leadership, and good citizenship—preparing them to succeed with confidence both in school and beyond."
"At InnovOak School, students and families who thrive align with our reimagined educational philosophy. Some students need more than they currently receive, including those intrinsically motivated and seeking academic challenges and enrichment, yet lacking personalized attention in larger classes. These students excel in small groups and benefit from a coaching relationship with teachers, often missing in traditional settings. Self-sufficient students may also be overlooked in crowded classrooms. Families needing a solid foundation in traditional learning and upholding family-focused values will find our approach beneficial.
We are Private School Reimagined,!
We create a collaborative environment where parents and teachers work together to support growth but we do not interfere with parenting. We balance foundational education with innovative opportunities, aligning with our commitment to nurturing enthusiasm and ensuring a supportive, values-driven learning experience."
"Sherwood Heights offers a structured and academically focused environment that may not align with families seeking a highly flexible or alternative approach to education. Our programme is designed for students who respond well to clear expectations and steady academic challenge. While we provide individual attention and support, the pace may feel demanding for those who require extensive accommodations. Our priority is always each child’s success and well-being, and we work closely with families to ensure that Sherwood Heights is the right environment for their child to truly flourish."
"We may not be the best fit for families whose children have learning needs far below grade level. Our approach requires students to engage with high academic standards, and we may not support those needing extensive remediation. Students must take an active role, developing independence and resilience. Families who are not supportive of learning beyond classroom time or who cannot support reasonable homework expectations, may find InnovOak challenging. We also expect parents to value and uphold uniform, attendance, and school policies, and families that cannot partner with the school would struggle with our values. InnovOak is not suited for families seeking a boarding school culture or those focused on elite status over student learning. For parents who expect a public school approach, or a tutoring-style model, InnovOak may not be a fit—our small classes are designed for engaged, personalized learning, and we are contantly removing limits that are found in today's public schools."
"Families choose Sherwood Heights for its rigorous academics, individualized attention, and welcoming school environment that fosters meaningful connections among students and teachers. They value our proven results—graduates who consistently earn admission to competitive university programmes—and the personal care that defines everyday life at our school. With a strong reputation for academic excellence, dedicated teaching, and small class sizes, Sherwood Heights continues to attract families who seek a nurturing and achievement-oriented education for their children."
"InnovOak is chosen by families for its commitment to exceeding traditional learning foundations. Parents value our model that prioritizes distraction-free learning, exceeds Ontario standards, and fosters a positive environment where teachers develop fundamental skills in every student. We emphasize early reading and writing skills crucial for graduation success and mathematical fluency through our SPEAK Math approach. Our LifeREADY approach equips students with essential life and learning skills, alongside a robust curriculum including Arts, Science, Humanities, Coding, Financial Literacy, and Physical Education. Each grade supports a clear path to graduation, fostering well-rounded, independent learners. This comprehensive approach ensures students are thoroughly prepared for the challenges of tomorrow. We uphold traditional values that align with parents' educational goals, ensuring a supportive and enriching educational experience at InnovOak School."
"Sherwood Heights is widely recognized within the community as one of Mississauga’s leading private schools, known for combining high academic standards with a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. Our reputation is built on exceptional student achievement, the professionalism and dedication of our staff, and the strong character of our students, who embody the school’s core values of integrity, effort, and kindness in all that they do."
"We are known for being a forward-thinking school that blends traditional values with modern innovation. Families recognize InnovOak for our high academic standards and our commitment to preparing students for the future. Our LifeREADY program is a standout feature, as it equips students with essential life skills like financial literacy and coding—skills that set them apart. We’re also known for offering personalized attention with small class sizes, ensuring that every student is engaged and supported.
In the public eye, InnovOak is associated with developing well-rounded individuals—students who excel not only academically, but also in areas like critical thinking, self-regulation, and leadership. Families appreciate our strong partnership with parents and our commitment to real-world readiness, balancing academic rigor with emotional and social growth. We stand out for reimagining private education in a way that resonates with the modern family, while remaining rooted in tradition."
"Families are often pleasantly surprised by the warmth and personal connection that define life at Sherwood Heights. Behind every academic success is a dedicated teacher who notices the small details, offering encouragement, guidance, and mentorship along the way. This genuine focus on relationships—built on care, respect, and support—is one of the school’s greatest strengths, shaping an environment where students feel seen, valued, and inspired to do their best."
"ocated at the intersection of the Innovation and Heritage Districts within a tech startup space, InnovOak deliberately integrates innovation into traditional learning. Our unconventional setting in a renovated factory-turned-tech space is a testament to our commitment to combining innovation with decades of educational expertise. As InnovOak continues to grow, we expand our offerings to include a gym space, outdoor activities, and a focus on Arts, Science, Humanities, which enhances learning and provides a well-rounded student experience. While our space may defy tradition, our sensible and creative approach resonates deeply with families seeking a quality education. Parents are surprised that there is a school willing to focus on their child with the importance they deserve but may have been missing. Families that want to grow with us are in for an exciting journey that doesn't just get their kids to graduation, but prepares them for whatever their future holds."
"Many new families are pleasantly surprised by the advanced level of study at Sherwood Heights, even in the early grades, and by how quickly students rise to meet those challenges with confidence. They also appreciate the wide range of opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, including clubs, robotics, music, athletics, and leadership activities, all of which help students develop a balanced set of skills and discover their individual strengths and interests."
"Families are surprised to learn that the following things are an important part of our school:
- We guarantee that our students can read, write, and express themselves mathematically by the time they enter Grade 1.
- Our students who start with us early surpass the expectations of the Ontario curriculum, meeting their grade expectations at the start of the grade rather than the end.
- We implement an effective guidance coaching model that surprises with its proactive, results-oriented approach.
- We focus on teaching our own Foundational Skillset (Learning Skills) to help improve each student's learning.
- We celebrate Canadian culture, maintaining traditional celebrations like Halloween and Christmas while also supporting cultural traditions that matter to our students.
- We focus on teaching students rather than the latest progressive trends in a neutral educational environment."

I am forever bursting with gratification over what our students and faculty are able to achieve. The multitude of accomplishments are varied and far-reaching, and make our school environment exciting, rewarding, engaging, and satisfying. We are relentlessly working towards one theme, and that is ‘Making It Happen’. Students ‘make it happen’ as they are fully engaged in a wonderful array of exhilarating events, clubs, competitions, tournaments, festivals, and fairs. Guided by their teachers, students are fully immersed in their pursuit to do their best and learn from their experiences. The children participate in a wide array of stimulating activities which include the Science Fairs, Math Competitions, Public Speaking Competitions, Music Festivals, Spelling Bees, Shows, Sports Tournaments, and much more. Also, the clubs are a big hit with the students and serve to broaden their horizons. Traditional
Information not available
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

Sherwood Heights follows an enriched and well-rounded curriculum for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The comprehensive curriculum emphasizes the basic subjects of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, French, and computers; and addresses the importance of music, the arts, and physical fitness.
InnovOak School prioritizes the traditional building blocks of student learning—reading, writing, and mathematics—to establish a robust foundation for academic success. Through structured and progressive instruction in these fundamental skills, students develop strong literacy and numeracy abilities essential for navigating complex academic challenges and future careers. Our curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing students to adapt and thrive in an ever-evolving world where innovation continually reshapes industries and opportunities. By mastering these core subjects, students gain the confidence and competence needed to pursue diverse post-secondary pathways confidently. We also focus on well roundedness by including Sciences, The Arts, French, Humanities, and Physical Education into our weekly schedules. InnovOak School fosters a positive learning environment that encourages creativity and exploration, equipping students with the adaptability and resilience necessary to excel in careers that may not yet exist. Our goal is to empower students to embrace innovation, tackle emerging challenges, and contribute meaningfully to society as future leaders and innovators. To do that, they need to be good students and good people.
Traditional Math
These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.
A traditional, comprehensive, challenging and modernized math programme.
We have adopted a pure Singapore Math curriculum because Ontario’s standards don’t fully prepare students for success and lack structure. Our blended focus fosters deep conceptual understanding, structure, and critical thinking, all of which are essential for higher-level math. We recognized that the Ontario curriculum often lacks the rigor necessary for students to be competitive, so our goal is to ensure that by Grade 9, our students are on par with international math learners. At InnovOak, we teach math as a language through our "Speak Math" approach. This method encourages students to articulate their mathematical thinking clearly and confidently, treating math as a language to be mastered. By "Speaking Math", students gain a stronger understanding of the subject, improving both fluency and comprehension. This holistic approach not only prepares students for success in math but also keeps their post-secondary pathways open beyond Grade 11, where many typically struggle.
In PreK to Grade 8 we use Dimensions as our primary book. Teachers in Senior School are bound by AP and the OSSD, and will chose materials from the Trillium list that are current and are focused on university preparations.
At InnovOak, calculators are tools for advanced math, but students must develop fluency in basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) through daily homework. Calculators may be used for complex problems, but assessments will ensure students can perform basic operations without assistance to build strong math fundamentals.
Phonics-intensive
Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.

The kindergarten programme is academic based, well balanced, comprehensive and instills a love of learning.
We go beyond basic pre-reading skills to develop reading fluency and comprehension early on. In preschool, we focus on pre-reading skills, and as students move into early JK, we begin whole group reading lessons. We use Heggerty, UFLI, and Scarborough’s Reading Rope creating a structured approach to reading instruction, focusing on all critical components: phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. Through a combination of focused instruction, small group work, and individual coaching, we ensure students not only recognize letters and sounds but also learn to read for meaning. Our goal is for every student to enter Grade 1 as a fluent reader who engages actively with texts. Grounded in the science of reading, this approach builds both foundational skills and comprehension, preparing students for long-term academic success while fostering a love for reading.
DIBELS Testing: This school periodically uses DIBELS testing to assess reading progress.
We use Running Records, and Heggerty to asses skill development to measure and ensure student succces.
Equal balance
Programs that balance systematic and process approaches equally likely have an emphasis on giving young students ample opportunities to write, while providing supplementary class-wide instruction in grammar, parts of sentences, and various writing strategies.
Programs that balance systematic and process approaches equally likely have an emphasis on giving young students ample opportunities to write, while providing supplementary class-wide instruction in grammar, parts of sentences, and various writing strategies.
Phonics, handwriting, spelling, grammar concepts, reading and reading comprehension are important components of our writing programme.
At InnovOak, we use an equal balance approach to teaching writing, combining both systematic instruction and the writing process. We emphasize the importance of clear communication of thought and ideas, starting with printing and moving into cursive as students progress. Our students are taught essential skills like planning, revising, and editing, while learning sentence construction, grammar, and the structural elements of narrative writing. At the same time, we encourage students to engage in meaningful writing early on, promoting creativity and idea generation. By writing “real things,” they become motivated to express themselves and improve. Regular feedback helps refine their skills and build confidence. This approach ensures that students not only master the technical aspects of writing but also develop a love for writing, allowing them to communicate effectively and write with purpose. It prepares them for success in all areas of writing throughout their education.
Equal Balance
Science programs that balance expository and inquiry learning equally will likely have an equal blend of tests and experiments; direct, textbook-based instruction and student-centred projects.

Rigorous science programme.
Our science program follows the Ontario Curriculum for each grade level, ensuring students meet the required curriculum expectations to be prepared for OSSD courses in Grade 9. We blend direct instruction with inquiry-based learning, giving students a strong foundation in scientific facts, theories, and relationships while encouraging them to actively engage in the scientific process. Through expository teaching, students gain essential knowledge using textbooks and direct instruction to ensure mastery of key concepts. At the same time, we emphasize hands-on inquiry, where students develop hypotheses, conduct experiments, and engage in student-centered projects that build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This balanced approach ensures students not only meet academic standards but also develop the ability to apply scientific knowledge creatively and confidently. By combining both direct instruction and inquiry-based learning, we prepare students for long-term success in STEM fields and future academic challenges.

Traditional
In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

Reading and reading comprehension, novel studies and various literature programmes are all offered.
Our focus onliterature goes beyond reading and writing; we emphasize learning from well-rounded, quality literature that inspires deep thinking and appreciation for diverse authors. Our students explore the substance of plot, characters, and setting, not only to understand texts, but to improve their writing process in younger grades. By studying these foundational elements, students enhance their writing skills while engaging with both classic and contemporary literature. We encourage personal reflections and connections to the text, world, and self, making literature a vital part of both reading and writing. From picture books to novels and literary classics, our goal is to have students read age-appropriate materials that are relevant to their world. Through class discussions and critical essay writing, students develop the ability to analyze and connect with literature. This balance prepares them for success in OSSD courses and future AP studies, ensuring they engage meaningfully with texts at all stages.

Expanding Communities
Usually focused on teaching history and geography at an early age, the core knowledge approach uses story, drama, reading, and discussion to teach about significant people, places, and events. Breadth of content and knowledge is emphasized. The curriculum is often organized according to the underlying logic of the content: history might be taught sequentially, for example (as students move through the grades).
The Expanding Communities approach organizes the curriculum around students’ present, everyday experience. In the younger grades, students might learn about themselves, for example. As they move through the grades, the focus gradually broadens in scope: to the family, neighbourhood, city, province, country, and globe. The curriculum tends to have less focus on history than Core Knowledge programs.
Teaching history and geography from the beginning with an international approach from a Canadian perspective.
The social studies program for Grades 1-6 at InnovOak introduces students to their world by starting with familiar experiences and gradually expanding to include local, provincial, national, and global communities. Students begin by exploring topics like the self, family, and neighbourhood, building a foundation for understanding how they fit into larger social structures. As they progress, the curriculum broadens to cover cities, provinces, and ultimately the global community. Aligned with the Ontario social studies curriculum, our program emphasizes an inquiry-based approach. Students are encouraged to ask meaningful questions, explore diverse perspectives, and think critically about the world around them. Through storytelling, discussions, and hands-on projects, they investigate how history, geography, and social systems shape their lives. This approach fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and engagement, helping students develop a strong sense of community and preparing them for deeper learning in later grades.
Perennialism
These programs represent an equal balance between the perennialist and pragmatic approach to teaching the humanities and social sciences.
Perennialism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes the idea of education being a kind of “conversation” between generations, and so frequently turns to “Great Works” and “Big Ideas” for teaching-content. Perennialist programs approach past works on their own terms; as if they might actually help students understand “today” better. Past works are not viewed as mere historical artifacts, but as gateways to a deeper understanding of the human condition. History (and, by extension, the humanities in general) therefore plays a large role in perennialist curriculums, though social sciences like economics, psychology, and sociology can still be taught. There is a strong Liberal Arts bent to perennialist programs. The key goals are to develop critical thinking, a strong foundation of core knowledge (or “cultural literacy”), and persuasion skills through informed debate and extensive practice in essay writing.
Rigorous history and geography programme based on the Ministry of Education guidelines.
The history and geography program at InnovOak for Grades 7-10 follows the Ontario curriculum, providing a solid foundation for Grade 10 Canadian History. Students begin by studying local and provincial history, then expand their understanding to include national and global contexts. Through the study of significant events, people, and places, students develop a comprehensive view of how history and geography shape the world around them. Our program is aligned with the Ontario curriculum’s inquiry-based approach, encouraging students to ask meaningful questions, analyze primary sources, and explore diverse perspectives. We employ discussions, hands-on projects, and critical analysis to deepen their understanding of key events and geographical concepts. By fostering curiosity and critical thinking, our approach ensures that students not only gain the content knowledge required but also develop the analytical skills needed to succeed in Grade 10 Canadian History and more advanced studies in the future.
Communicative
These programs feature an equal blend of the audio-lingual and communicative styles of language instruction.
The communicative method of language acquisition emphasizes the use of the target language in authentic contexts. The approach commonly features interactive group work, games, authentic texts, and opportunities to learn about the cultural background of the language. Drills and quizzes may still be used, but less frequently than with the audio-lingual method.
An academic balanced approach.
We introduce French starting in JK, going beyond the Ontario curriculum to meet international language standards, specifically the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This framework ensures that our students exceed basic Ontario expectations by focusing on proficiency across listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. While Ontario requires limited French exposure in early grades, we immerse students in daily French lessons starting in Junior Kindergarten, using the CEFR's language competency standards. With engaging, age-appropriate activities and an emphasis on real-world communication, we ensure students progress toward fluency, not just basic conversational ability. Our approach helps students achieve higher levels of proficiency, preparing them for international opportunities and setting them apart from peers following only provincial guidelines. This advanced preparation guarantees success in secondary-level French and equips students for global interactions in the future.

Creative
These programs have an equal emphasis on receptive and creative learning.
Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
Fine arts is an important part of our curriculum.
Our arts program at InnovOak strikes an equal balance between receptive and creative learning, giving students a deep appreciation for art history and the opportunity to actively engage in art creation. In addition to studying the principles of visual arts, music, drama, and theatre, students participate in studio work that fosters their cognitive and emotional development. To ensure success in high school courses such as AMU1O, ADA1O, and AVI1O, we build strong foundations from an early age. This includes vocal training in Grades 1-3, learning brass instruments in Grades 4-6, and strings in Grades 7-8. We set ambitious goals, such as school-wide concerts, arts nights, and performances, giving students the opportunity to showcase their talents. By blending expressive creativity and disciplined skill-building, we provide students with the tools they need to thrive in both artistic appreciation and practical execution as they advance through our program.

Light integration
A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.
Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.
A constructivist, collaborative approach to teaching and integrating technology.
We focus on teaching students how to use technology to enhance their learning and communication skills. Beginning with keyboarding, we ensure students can communicate fluently and use productivity tools effectively. Our approach emphasizes the appropriate use of technology, including social media and AI, which are integral to the future of work. We equip students with the skills to use, create, and adapt to modern technology. We offer communication technology courses as part of the OSSD, ensuring students are proficient in the tech skills needed for their studies and future careers. While we use interactive whiteboards and laptops for schoolwork, we limit screen time to educational purposes. Our philosophy is based on light integration, where technology supports learning but does not distract from fundamental skills. We focus on developing digitally literate students who can navigate technology effectively without over-reliance.

Learning the rules of the game and good sportsmanship are important. House league teams, sports teams, intramural sports.
Our physical education program follows the Ontario curriculum, emphasizing a commitment to healthy lifestyles and fitness. We offer a well-rounded approach, incorporating individual and team sports, helping students develop skills in participation, teamwork, and self-discipline. Beyond traditional activities, we include non-traditional options such as rock climbing, skating, and swimming, giving students the chance to challenge themselves in new ways. The program is based on PPL1O, PPL2O, and PPL3O, with a focus on physical fitness, active living, and mental well-being. Students engage in various sports and fitness routines, promoting lifelong health. We also provide a variety of extra-curricular activities, adapting offerings based on student interests. This allows for exploration of unique or specialized activities outside of the classroom, fostering active participation and a lifelong love for physical activity.
Academic
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

The kindergarten programme is academic based, well balanced, comprehensive and instills a love of learning. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of reading, writing, mathematics, social science and French. Students will also expand their language skills through conversation, word activities, stories, audio and visual material, and computer software. Gross and fine motor skills and co-ordination are developed through physical and educational activities and the use of paints, crayons, clay, sand and water. Creative expression is encouraged through arts & crafts, music, and drama.
At InnovOak School, our kindergarten approach integrates the science of reading while focusing on foundational skills critical for early literacy and numeracy. Our program ensures students leave Senior Kindergarten meeting Ontario's end-of-Grade-1 expectations in both reading and mathematics. Through inquiry-based learning and proven teaching methods, students master phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies in language arts. Mathematics instruction emphasizes understanding place value, developing number sense, learning number fluency, and the basics of addition and subtraction through hands-on activities. Our curriculum includes dedicated time for science, art, music, and indoor/outdoor play, fostering creativity, curiosity, and holistic development. By creating a nurturing environment, InnovOak School prepares kindergarten students to excel academically and socially, equipping them with the skills and confidence for future success.

Our differentiated assessment approach provides voice and choice with customizable evaluation methods, enhancing personalized educational experiences that align with student learning styles and strengths.
Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

Intellectual
The goal is to cultivate "academically strong, creative and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions."
Our developmental philosophy is focused on a balanced approach, giving equal attention to intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth. We aim to shape students into well-rounded individuals who are academically strong, emotionally intelligent, socially aware, and physically active. Our emphasis on intellectual development nurtures creative and critical thinkers who can tackle complex problems and make thoughtful decisions. We also want parents, at graduation, to look at their children and think, “What a remarkable young person they have become.” By fostering a blend of rationality, empathy, and self-awareness, we help students grow into confident individuals ready to lead themselves and others. Our holistic approach ensures each student develops into a thoughtful, engaged citizen, prepared to make a meaningful impact.

While we do not offer in-house programs for specialized support services such as social work, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (SLP), we fully support external providers coming into the school during the school day to deliver these programs. We believe that facilitating access to these services, identified by parents as essential, ensures the best outcomes for students and their families. By allowing these services to be provided on-site, we make it easier for students to benefit from them, increasing the likelihood of program success. We have established connections with professionals in the fields of social work, OT, PT, and SLP, and can refer parents to trusted partners when needed. Additionally, we can recommend counselors and social workers when appropriate, offering families a network of support to ensure their child's educational and developmental success.
Information not available
At InnovOak, we do not actively seek students who require an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). However, if challenges arise, we leverage our special education expertise, Student Success model, and staff skills to create learning plans and IEPs tailored to the student’s needs. We work closely with families to ensure effective support is provided. If needs evolve, we collaborate with parents to discuss future academic goals and potential pathways, including whether a different setting may be more suitable. We also explore creative options, such as adding resource support or staff capacity. If helpful, we may consider the use of Educational Assistants or tutors, with these services provided by the school but funded in addition to tuition.

A student with a love for learning.
We are looking for students with a positive attitude, whether they are confident in their abilities or still discovering their strengths. Whether they are intrinsically motivated or need encouragement, we provide a supportive environment that helps them excel. Our focus on success nurtures students who are coachable, open to feedback, and able to translate that feedback into personal goals and growth. Many of our students come from academic environments that may not prioritize students as individuals and learners, but rather view them as tools for social change. At InnovOak, we emphasize personal growth, offering a traditional approach with an innovative educational model. We value students who are resilient, adaptable, and willing to take positive risks in their learning. Students should be willing to embrace independent work, critical feedback, and goal-setting. Whether shy or extroverted, students who thrive here are motivated to grow in areas like resilience, self-discipline, and critical thinking. We seek those who value a challenging, supportive environment where their growth as learners and individuals is the primary focus.
