The Sycamore School doesn’t look like a typical school—it occupies a house in downtown London—and, in fact, it isn’t a typical school, which is why families turn here. The students arrive having demonstrated their skills and academic abilities, yet, for a range of reasons, aren’t reaching their potentials in a more traditional learning environment. Instruction is cooperative, allowing students to take responsibility for their learning in consort with their instructors. One of the goals is to motivate learners, and to help them find their own unique paths to success. The ideal student is one who will thrive within a very close-knit, student-oriented setting, and who is capable of operating at the top of his or her peer group.
View full reportFounded in 1956, HDCH has been doing great and impressively consistent work ever since. It has a good breadth of curricular and extracurricular offerings. Instruction is connected with projects, encouraging students to work together toward completing meaningful tasks, which builds and supports a facility with the core curriculum. Families are also drawn by the values which undergird the academic program. The school reaches out to resources and organizations within the local community, using those interactions to build an empathetic worldview and a genuine appreciation of diversity. Certainly, there’s a lot to love.

Learning in the 21st Century requires that schools change with the times. Bodies of knowledge do not stagnate and education must not continue to do so. At the turn of the 20th Century, John Dewey believed that "the teacher should only provide background information and have the students work together in groups on the concept. This should start conversation and discussion, and give rise to valuable collaboration. Although the written exam would continue to play an important role, particularly presentations, projects and other evaluation techniques are used to keep track of the progress."
The London School pedagogy considers these notions and takes them forward into the 21st Century where all that exists as knowledge is available to everyone who knows how to access it in the online forum, how to evaluate the credibility of the information and how to interpret its meaning. Students no longer must prove their worth by spouting the wisdom of the ages but rather by developing the discernment required to use knowledge to its best advantage; how to apply it to everyday life and how to evaluate the impact of certain knowledge and actions from the appropriate historical perspective. We do not want future generations to repeat past mistakes but we do want them to understand how their choices and actions will shape their future. What our students need to know remains to be seen. It is our job to ensure that they have the confidence and skills to recognize the value and application of knowledge as presented to them through a variety of personal and school experiences.

One of the ways that we will accomplish this is through the essentials of Project-Based Learning (PBL). And it is our vision to have Project-Based Learning as an everyday learning experience for our students at Hamilton District Christian High.
At the core of Project-Based Learning is that real-world problems capture students’ interest and provoke serious thinking as the students acquire and apply new knowledge in a problem-solving context. This learning is contextual, creative, and shared. Students collaborate on meaningful projects creating opportunities for groups of students to gather information, think critically be creative and communicate in order for them to answer challenging questions or solve complex problems. By making learning relevant to them in this way, students see a purpose for mastering state-required skills and content concepts.
Hamilton District Christian High is registered as a private school with the Ontario Ministry of Education. It provides a curriculum that follows Ministry guidelines and standards and uses the credit system outlined in the Ontario Secondary School Document (1999). All the teachers have Ontario teacher’s certification. Graduating students will have completed the credits required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Our progressive liberal arts program aims to deepen the learning experience while strengthening skills and exciting a passion for learning in a creative, collaborative environment. HDCH welcomes learners of all kinds, with the caveat that we are a small school with some limitations of resources. For example, we offer a Lifeskills Pathway for student with severe cognitive ability, however we have a low capacity of 5 students for that class due to its high resource needs. Our older school building is undergoing on-going accessibility upgrades, but these may not always serve students with complex physical needs. We undergo a careful and kind process to determine what the students needs are, matching these with our resources, to ensure a wonderful fit.
High school aged students typically may have previously diagnosed learning disabilities; The Sycamore School will refer students to an appropriate clinician for assessment and/or renewed assessment as indicated. The Sycamore School offers accommodations to students with learning disabilities who are able to work toward achievement of graduation requirements with minimal support. Small classes may be the support that individual students need.
We would not advise a family against de-enrolling their child at our school if they had a clinically diagnosed learning disability that became apparent while studying at HDCH, so long as we were able to accomodate their needs.

Teens who are experiencing anxiety, depression, sensory overload, social anxiety and/or school refusal and who have demonstrated the ability to complete credits toward the OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma but may who require more time in order to meet the graduation requirements.
The best way to get the most out of your high school experience is to get involved. Student life is rich at Hamilton District Christian High. We offer much more than academics and have very active extracurricular programs. Whether you’re into sports, inclined towards the arts, or serving in your community (or all), there are plenty of activities to help you stay active and connected. Our campus thrives on the involvement of the entire school community. Exceptional learning is for every student. Each student has unique God given gifts, abilities, and learning styles. We work to differentiate learning so that each student can succeed. We provide support for faith development, academic planning and development, learning, and individualized programs where appropriate.
The deposit of $2,000.00 represents part of the total yearly tuition and as such is applied to monthly tuition at the rate of $200.00/month or fraction thereof over the ten month period.
