The Sacred Heart School of Montreal was founded in 1861, and built around the principles that were at the core of the Society of the Sacred Heart, which was begun by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat in 1800. Among those principles was to educate girls to take part in society beyond the home or the church. Barat sought to encourage girls to take a transformative role in their communities, something that, it perhaps goes without say, was a unique perspective for the time. Sacred Heart continues to follow that ideal, expressing it within modern curricular and extracurricular programing, including the integration of 21st century literacies and online tutoring. An international gaze, too, is used to inform the program, seen specifically in service trips and international exchanges. The school was unique when it was formed, and it remains at the cutting edge of education today.

Though when we pick up our kids from school each day, we’re not thinking about those things. Instead, we ask: “How was your day?” Maybe we ask it reflexively, but when it comes to how children learn, that’s actually where the rubber really meets the road. Kids learn best in a consistent, supportive, personal, safe, and community-focused environment. Providing that kind of environment is what forms a basis for all of the work at Kingsley. When they say “thrive” they mean it in the broad sense—gaining a strong academic foundation—but also in the sense of having fun, gaining confidence, and finding a voice within a community of peers. The programs are strong, the teaching staff seasoned, and the school has had consistent success for more than three decades. For the families that enroll here, all of that is important. Likewise, the strength and focus of the learning environment is often, quite rightly, a principle draw. After all, a child's ability to thrive in life begins in having a good day, today.

Reggio Emilia programs are offered by some schools at the preschool and elementary level. The approach aims to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of projects (as opposed to activities or lessons): teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. They can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. The philosophy calls for a high degree of parent involvement as well, particularly when forming curricula and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).
Small class sizes guarantee students individual attention from our dedicated faculty. An accelerated mathematics program leads to Calculus in Secondary V. The school also offers an AP course in European History, Psychology and English. French is offered at four levels to match girls' aptitudes, including Français langue d'enseignement, which is equivalent to what is taught in a French school. Sec I & II have the opportunity to take Social Sciences (History and Geography) in French. The Faculty Scholars program allows motivated students to work on an independent project with an expert in the field. Sacred Heart girls benefit from the balance between academic excellence and rich extracurricular programs. Students compete in team sports such as ice hockey, basketball and soccer, and participate in clubs.
At Kingsley we follow the Ontario Curriculum with enhanced programs in music, French and physical education taught by specialty teachers beginning in kindergarten. Our aim is to give students the skills to teach themselves and to empower them to reach their own unique potential. Building relationships, learning to understand themselves, their actions and interactions are the basis for our strong character development. Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.

The Arts are an integral part of our society and our life experiences and are therefore an essential part of a well-rounded education. They open the door to artistic sensitivity, creativity, and the exploration of a student’s talents and interests. They further develop leadership skills, self-confidence,creative thinking and approaches to problem solving as well as provide the means to explore various mediums of personal and artistic expression. Each discipline combines theoretical understanding with a variety of practical applications in both individual and group settings. Historical, cultural and individual perspectives place the arts within a broader context; and students learn to analyze the role of the arts in the past and present and to recognize their power as both a catalyst for, and a recorder of, social change.
MUSIC: Students receive four weekly periods of specialist music instruction and perform at two concerts per year. They begin recorder in Grade One, read music by Grade Two/Three, and join Band in Grade Four/Five. In choir, they learn proper singing techniques and sing in parts. We take fun music field trips, including a bus trip to the symphony every April. Students have the opportunity to join a lunchtime ukulele club or take private lessons after school in singing, piano, guitar, ukulele, and theory. Indeed, each student starts the day by reading the \'Daily News\' which appears as the homepage when first opening up their Chromebook.\n\nEach class also has a \'Google Classroom\', a virtual classroom, which teachers can use to place learning material, evaluations or otherwise engage with the students in discussion and classwork. In addition to giving students the opportunity to increase their level of physical fitness and raise their awareness of healthy lifestyle choices, the physical education programme fosters values that are an integral part of a Sacred Heart education: teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, respect for themselves and for others, and a spirit of community.
We have a fun and rigorous physical education program that begins in pre-K and is taught by a specialty teacher. There are also ample opportunities throughout the day for outdoor play engaging gross motor skills. Students are outdoors 2-3 times daily.

Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.
Kingsley offers both a half-day and full-day kindergarten program. Our play-based (Reggio Emilia-inspired) class offers many avenues for our young learners to thrive. Our small class sizes allow for individual attention and a balance of teacher-led lessons as well as time for each child to explore on their own and with peers. The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
Our school approach is to meet each child from the place of their development and work from there. We believe in a differentiated approach for all children at our school. Classes are teacher led, and differentiation then applied.

A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. At Kingsley we believe in partnering with our parents. If a child is demonstrating learning difficulties we make sure to bring this to the parents attention. We work together to find the right solution for the family that we are able to support as a school.
