The student body at Wise Owl reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, and the school uses that as a foundation to encourage and celebrate a multicultural perspective. Wise Owl is small, which is a draw for the families that enrol, as is the program that runs from preschool through the primary and elementary years. There is a close, family feel, with an individual attention to the needs of the students. Likewise, there is an attention to building students’ emotional and social esteem within a values-based environment. Our Montessori roots are evident in our "Pre-Casa" and "Casa" programmes for students aged two to six years. These younger children are provided with the best of traditional Montessori education, which is proven to foster early academic development. They also experience more modern programmes in technology, such as coding, and other specialist disciplines which complement and support the Montessori base, providing our students with a truly outstanding early educational experience.
Our Elementary school programme further nurtures each child's potential by providing students with rigorous academics at a full grade level ahead in core academic subjects. Technology plays a key role in the facilitation of this – SmartBoard technology is available in every classroom. UC students also participate in a fully supported iPad program, in which applications or apps are used to enhance learning. Students in grades 1 to 5 have access to iPads, and every student in grade 6 to 8 has an individual school-issued iPad that is pre-loaded with educational applications. Extra-curricular activities are also integral to the UC experience. Students access our state-of-the-art auditorium for enriched and comprehensive arts education including vocal and instrumental music, visual art and drama. For the past 11 years, UMS students have surpassed achievement expectations for every grade in mathematics, as measured by the CAT-4 Canadian Achievement Test and reported by Psychometrics Canada Ltd. In 2015, our grade 7 and 8 students participated in the Gauss Contest, set by the Centre for Education at the University of Waterloo. Nearly one-quarter of our contest participants earned scores of 89% or higher. For the Canadian National Mathematics League, set by the University of Windsor, our grade 6 and 7 students placed second and third, respectively, nationally. Five of our students earned spots in the top twenty students nationwide. Overall, our grade 6 and 7 students earned second place out of more than 200 schools, and our grade 8 students finished 13th out of 164 participating schools.
Wise Owl adheres to the Ontario curriculum as the cornerstone for our mathematics education. Our comprehensive methodology integrates in-class activities to reinforce concepts, adapting approaches to developmental stages. Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.

UMS pupils work at a grade-ahead level in Language Arts. Students are UMS are progressively introduced to French vocabulary beginning as early as age 2, in our Pre-Casa and Casa program. Formal instruction in French begins in grade 1, giving elementary students several years of head start in French. During French lessons, students learn vocabulary and develop conversational skills, using a fun and interactive approach involving stories, props, music, games and activities. The main resource for French instruction is AIM -- Accelerative Integrated Method -- a system which uses hand gestures to represent and mimic sounds and words. This is a popular movement-based approach to learning that is especially helpful for active, high-energy students that enjoy expressing themselves through large-muscle movement (kinaesthetic learning).

Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

At Wise Owl, we view computers as valuable supplementary tools for lessons, providing access to a wealth of teaching materials and media through the internet. However, our pedagogical focus prioritizes the direct teacher-student relationship. We believe that immediate communication between teacher and student allows for nuanced understanding and tailored guidance without reliance on technology. While technology is pervasive in children's lives beyond school, we emphasize maintaining a space for interpersonal interaction at Wise Owl. Regular exercise is essential to children’s overall health and positive development. Students participate in formal Physical Education classes with trained teachers, as well as in a wide variety of intramural and competitive sports teams. Our competitive teams compete against other local schools. Physical Education classes follow the Ontario Health and Physical Education Association curriculum. In these classes, not only do the students have the opportunity to be physically active while learning important skills, but they also work on developing their self-esteem, learn about good sportsmanship, and develop positive exercise habits while having a great deal of fun. Our Elementary programme also offers students many sports teams, such as basketball, volleyball, golf, swimming, soccer, cross country, floor hockey, and many more.
Wise Owl Private School's physical education program is a structured and engaging initiative that collaborates with a specialized company every Friday, ensuring a consistent schedule for sports activities. Students benefit from diverse sports exploration, including team sports, individual activities, and recreational games, fostering a well-rounded understanding of physical activity. Our focus extends to skill development, tailoring activities for different age groups to enhance fundamental motor skills and sports-specific techniques. We prioritize physical fitness and overall well-being, integrating activities that promote cardiovascular health, flexibility, and strength. Academic
Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
The Montessori approach is a student-centered and student-directed teaching method that is offered within a prepared environment, which fosters exploration, experimentation, creativity, and respect. Our Casa programme builds on the foundation of the Montessori Method with extremely popular enhancements and additional learning opportunities for our students in music, science, visual and dramatic arts, and more.
The preschool program at Wise Owl is designed to instill essential skills for success in Junior and Senior Kindergarten. Through interactive activities, students build foundational abilities, such as developing Number Sense and exploring various counting methods. In Junior Kindergarten, they delve into Measurement, Geometry, Data Management, and Probability. Senior Kindergarten fosters creativity, challenging students to think innovatively and apply classroom learning practically, preparing them for future academic pursuits with adaptable thinking.
Standard-enriched
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.
In our Montessori classrooms students are encouraged to work independently, as well as in small groups. As each child is an individual, they are encouraged to learn at their own pace, following their own personalized programming while being guided and monitored by our specially trained and nurturing teachers.
Wise Owl Private School adopts multi-age classrooms, cultivating collaboration among students of varying ages. High school students benefit from guided independent study, fostering self-directed learning and autonomy. Our instructional strategy emphasizes differentiated instruction, tailoring teaching methods to meet individual needs, ensuring a personalized and effective learning experience for all students.
Supportive
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
Our belief is that children are very capable and given the right opportunity and environment can excel academically at a very young age. Our Montessori classrooms provide students with the perfect environment to encourage development of essential skills as they develop a strong academic foundation. Students are challenged and encouraged as they progress through the enriched Montessori curriculum, with an emphasis on language and math skills development, before entering our elementary program, which follows the Ontario curriculum at a year-ahead.

Students in a Montessori classroom learn at their own pace following an individualized programme. This type of environment naturally provides accommodation for students who may have difficulties with some areas of learning as students are able to move at their own pace through the curriculum with the support and guidance of our specially trained teachers. Activities and materials that students can manipulate hands-on before moving to more abstract learning, encourage children to develop a more thorough understanding of what they are learning, encouraging greater success.
