Vaughan College was founded in 2009 in order to provide a vibrant, robust preparation for success in post-secondary studies. The core academics are key, as they should be, though so is an attention to facility in their application, within specific disciplines, and as applied across the curriculum. The student body is smaller than the mean, allowing a very close-knit learning environment with a high level of teacher-student engagement. The atmosphere itself is a draw, one in which social currency is gained in part through academic achievement—all students arrive academically oriented, and therefore enter a community of learners that are all of a like mind. The program seeks to develop values as well as a global perspective, which is also a draw. Howlett Academy’s academic programs prepare our students for higher order thinking while ensuring they have many opportunities to develop their confidence and self-esteem. Each student develops at a slightly different pace, creating a need for fluid age groupings and an education plan that is tailored towards his or her cognitive, social and emotional needs. Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
