There are many things that online instruction can offer that other schools simply can’t, including distance learning and remediation. Stephen Baker began developing the concept of the Virtual High School in 1995 with that in mind, and VHS gained accreditation—with it the ability to confer the OSSGD—in 2002. Courses can be started at any point, and students are able to work through the material at their own pace. There are many opportunities for interaction and collaboration with other students and instructors. At the end of the day, it’s a unique approach, and it has proven itself with a range of learners with a range of academic purposes.

As with those of its vintage, RMS has a long reputation for providing a quality program, one that has a high fidelity with the core aspects of the method. The school has grown to comprise four campuses, allowing for a nice range of resources while also maintaining a close-knit community environment at each location. RMS has also grown into its own identity, one based in adopting new methods and approaches, as appropriate and when sympathetic to the school’s mandate to educate with an eye to achievement and leadership. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a close-knit, challenging, active, and social learning environment.

Our Montessori-based Kindergarten Montessori (JK-aged students) and Prep-ONE (SK-aged students) combine with our Elementary programme to provide an integrated and seamless Junior Kindergarten to Grade Eight experience. Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. Online physical education gives students the flexibility to not only work through the course in whatever order they prefer, but it also allows them to choose activities for assessments that best fit their individual skills and comfort level. Students demonstrate their understanding and abilities through a variety of assessment opportunities. When it comes to the physical part of online physical education, activity-specific skills and strategies are supported by video instruction. Students see the movements of a skill or activity prior to participation, and then submit a video of themselves performing it for assessment and feedback. Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

Asperger's Syndrome On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour. | ||||

Troubled behaviour / troubled teens roubled teens tend to have problems that are intense, persistent, and can lead to quite unpredictable behaviour. Clinical Depression This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life. | ||||
Clinical anxiety This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror. | ||||

Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine. | ||||
Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder) This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech. | ||||
Blindness Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness." | ||||

VHS can implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs). An IEP is a document that outlines a student’s strengths, weaknesses, learning needs, and any accommodations to be made within a course. We implement any accommodations listed in an existing IEP that apply to our learning environment. Accommodations may include a reduced workload, simplified tasks and materials, or more time for learning and completing activities. Exam and test accommodations may include, but are not limited to, extra time to write an exam or test, the ability to scribe answers or read questions, memory aids for exams, breaks during exams, and no marks deducted for spelling. The assistance of other persons and the use of specialized equipment may also be required to accommodate the needs of the student.

Whether a student has a clinically diagnosed learning disability or develops learning difficulties while enrolled at VHS, we can accommodate and respond to their individual needs. With self-paced courses, round-the-clock access to course content, and 18 months to finish, VHS students have the freedom to take as much time as they need to review content, take notes, and practice retention. Our courses present content a number of ways (text, audio, images, video, interactive activities) and include a built-in screen reader. When it comes to assessments, students may choose how they present their ideas (e.g. write a paper, give an oral presentation, create a visual). Additionally, we make accommodations for students who use assistive technologies in their learning.
Learning accommodations can be made to meet the individual needs of our students. The smaller class sizes and teacher-student ratios allow for more individualized attention to help students meet their greatest potential. Having an open communication with the parents allows us to guide our students.

Anyone can take a course with Virtual High School. Our educational model and student body reflect the complexity and diversity of education in the twenty-first century. VHS students choose when and where to study, when to submit assignments, and when to write tests and the final exam. Students who derive the most benefit from the programs at Rowntree are those who are prepared to fully engage in school life. While the school has a strong focus on “STEM” (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) oriented classes and activities, Rowntree is also well known for its vibrant arts and athletics programs, and community involvement.
There are no admissions requirements, though students will be required to provide proof of their successful completion of a prerequisite course or equivalent, if applicable.
Rowntree Montessori School challenges its students towards Academic Excellence while developing the whole-child. We welcome all student applications regardless of academic level, learning styles or previous private school attendance.
We do not administer entrance exams, however, through the Admissions process, each student will be assessed through one or more of the following in order for the school to make an informed Admissions decision: observation, interview, more formal assessment and report cards, where appropriate.

Once the Admissions Office has received the full application you will be notified about next steps. Additional required school forms and a financial contract will be assigned to the parent through the online enrollment system, when appropriate.
When submitting your completed application, you will need to provide copies of the following: Proof of Citizenship, Health Card, Immunization records, and report cards from the last two years for students who have previously attended an elementary program elsewhere. We also require your signatures on a financial agreement with the school as well as all the required payments.
Tuition fees for the 2019-2020 school year range from $7,500 to $13,900 depending on programme selection. We offer sibling discounts and a number of payment plans.
