West Island College (WIC), in Montreal, is effectively two schools under one roof. It offers an enriched education for Grades 7 to 11 in two streams: one for native French language speakers and a separate French immersion program. Academic excellence is the main focus at WIC. The school also has strong athletics and arts programs, and offers a wide range of extracurriculars that includes musical theatre, debate, robotics, school newspaper work, and yoga. This helps unlock kids’ passions and nurtures their interests. After enrolment, kids enter one of three houses at WIC, creating instant camaraderie and community. Small class sizes, individualized learning, and whole-person development help kids thrive academically but also socially and emotionally. Dianne Johnson founded the Junior Academy in 1988 in the belief that small is better, and indeed the school has remained small, with an annual enrolment of just 100 students. Johnson lead the school for most of its life, lending a continuity to the program and keeping the focus clearly on the quality of the students' learning experience, and maintaining, above all, an atmosphere of care and support. While not all students arrive from the immediate area, the school prizes its position within the community, and encourages active parental involvement within the life of the school.

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Junior Academy offers a wide array of programming to support a variety of learning profiles. We offer small, break out groups for remedial programming in Language, Math, Science and Social Studies. Our Special Education Specialists provide resource support in the form of tutoring and our Strength Based approach enables students to leverage their strengths in order to succeed. By creating a partnership between our teachers, Special Education Specialists, additional therapists, our SLP and OT, we are uniquely positioned to support students with learning differences.
We have 1 learning specialist who reviews psycho-educational assessments and individualized education plans that are currently being followed. We always endeavor to collaborate with our families to support different learning profiles. There are several resource teachers on staff at Junior Academy who are available to assist students on an individualized basis. Student Success Plans, often known as I.E.P.’s, are drafted and followed if a student requires specific modifications or accommodations to his or her academic program.
