View full reportWhen parents are considering a school, they’re right to ask about instructional styles, teaching, programs, assessment. Those are important. Though when we pick up our kids from school each day, we’re not thinking about those things. Instead, we ask: “How was your day?” Maybe we ask it reflexively, but when it comes to how children learn, that’s actually where the rubber really meets the road. Kids learn best in a consistent, supportive, personal, safe, and community-focused environment. Providing that kind of environment is what forms a basis for all of the work at Kingsley. When they say “thrive” they mean it in the broad sense—gaining a strong academic foundation—but also in the sense of having fun, gaining confidence, and finding a voice within a community of peers. The programs are strong, the teaching staff seasoned, and the school has had consistent success for more than three decades. For the families that enroll here, all of that is important. Likewise, the strength and focus of the learning environment is often, quite rightly, a principle draw. After all, a child's ability to thrive in life begins in having a good day, today.

In my 13 years at Kingsley, I have had the honour and pleasure of watching our students engage, discover, and thrive. Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Reggio Emilia programs are offered by some schools at the preschool and elementary level. The approach aims to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of projects (as opposed to activities or lessons): teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. They can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. The philosophy calls for a high degree of parent involvement as well, particularly when forming curricula and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).
At Woodland we value a holistic approach to education. We provide a wide variety of curricular and co-curricular options in order to Enfold, Engage and Equip students for lives of Christian faith and service. In addition to the OSSD, our Woodland Diploma requirements ensure that students take courses from a variety of discipline areas. This balance provides students with a well-rounded education in Math & Sciences, Arts, English & Languages, Humanities, Canadian & World Studies, Business, Computers & Technological Studies, and Physical Education & Health Related Studies. All of our Woodland courses are foundationally built on one or more Christian Worldview Themes. These themes connect the essential focus of our courses to the Biblical story of “Creation, Fall & Redemption, and Restoration”. They also highlight connections between the courses, discipline areas, and co-curricular activities of our school program.
At Kingsley we follow the Ontario Curriculum with enhanced programs in music, French and physical education taught by specialty teachers beginning in kindergarten. Our aim is to give students the skills to teach themselves and to empower them to reach their own unique potential. It is an activity that involves the exploration, contemplation, and enjoyment of abstract concepts, theoretical principles, as well as problem solving skill development. All of these aspects allow us to explore and experience the richness of beauty, complexity, harmony, and precision that God has imprinted into his creation. Mathematics informs how effective and honest use of measurements, information, models and statistics can be used to positively impact our world. It is the goal of our Science department to prepare students for a life in fellowship with, service to God. In order to do this, students need to see themselves as unique and special creatures who are also an intricate part of the body of Christ. While studies in chemistry, physics and biology help students to appreciate the detail and wonder of living and non-living systems, they also reinforce the fact that nothing exists in isolation. In seeking to understand the created, we come one step closer to a deeper understanding and appreciation for our Creator! A firm understanding of scientific methods and theories is essential. Not only are we able to use appropriate technology to minister to the needs of others, but we are also able to speak to issues such as reproductive technology, genetic engineering, environmental problems and misuses of technology with a Christian voice.

Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
These programs have an equal emphasis on receptive and creative learning.
We are made in the image of the Creator and we therefore have innate creativity which is expressed by different people in different ways. The Arts program at Woodland provides a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their creative talents the areas of visual art, music, and drama. Our Arts courses seek to educate, refine, and mobilize the inherent creativity in all students. All courses have a hands-on focus with both theory, Christian worldview and performance fully integrated in each.
MUSIC: Students receive four weekly periods of specialist music instruction and perform at two concerts per year. They begin recorder in Grade One, read music by Grade Two/Three, and join Band in Grade Four/Five. In choir, they learn proper singing techniques and sing in parts. We take fun music field trips, including a bus trip to the symphony every April. Students have the opportunity to join a lunchtime ukulele club or take private lessons after school in singing, piano, guitar, ukulele, and theory. ART: Our youngest students begin to build confidence in their artistic abilities while being exposed to the elements of design. As the students mature they work on expanding their knowledge of the elements of design and applying them to individual and group projects.

Woodland seeks to provide extra-curricular activities programs that supplement the academic program of our school. We recognize that God has gifted students in a variety of ways, including abilities in athletics. Our Athletic Program provides an opportunity for students to develop and use their God-given abilities. We also believe that participation in extra-curricular activities, especially athletics, provides a good opportunity to encourage students in their relationships with Jesus Christ. These activities also enhance the atmosphere of the Woodland student body, providing students and parents opportunities to express positive school spirit. And finally, extra-curricular activities provide an opportunity to express our faith to other schools, coaches, and officials.
We have a fun and rigorous physical education program that begins in pre-K and is taught by a specialty teacher. There are also ample opportunities throughout the day for outdoor play engaging gross motor skills. Students are outdoors 2-3 times daily.

Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.
Kingsley offers both a half-day and full-day kindergarten program. Our play-based (Reggio Emilia-inspired) class offers many avenues for our young learners to thrive. Our small class sizes allow for individual attention and a balance of teacher-led lessons as well as time for each child to explore on their own and with peers. Asperger's Syndrome On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour. | ||||

Clinical Depression This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life. | ||||
Clinical anxiety This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror. | ||||
Suicidal thoughts This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life. | ||||
Drug and alcohol abuse This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning. | ||||

Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. The Academic Support Program (ASP) serves the needs of students of all levels of ability who face challenges in their academic work, assisting them to identify their gifts, learning styles and unique learning needs. The goal of the program is to help students develop skills and strategies, not only to assist them in reaching their academic goals to the best of their abilities, but also to foster positive lifelong habits and skills. A student enters the ASP program through a previous IEP (Individual Education Plan) substantiated by appropriate assessment(s) and/or teacher referral through the Guidance Department.
At Kingsley we believe in partnering with our parents. If a child is demonstrating learning difficulties we make sure to bring this to the parents attention. We work together to find the right solution for the family that we are able to support as a school. Families often have a team in place that we will work with, and if appropriate to our school environment as a whole, we welcome them into the school as support for the child.
