Which Montessori school is better in Calgary? Regular public schools are better or Montessori schools?
Alberta Education does not make comparisons of schools or school authorities. However when it comes to selecting a school, parents and students can choose from a wide range of options. They can select from public schools, Catholic schools, Francophone schools, private schools, and charter schools. The existence of choice within our education system facilitates new ideas and learning opportunities for students, increasing the overall quality of Alberta’s educational environment. Government believes enabling parents to choose the schools and/or programs that best suit the needs of their children is in the best interest of all Alberta students.
Montessori schools are based on the “Montessori Method” of education developed by the Italian Dr. Maria Montessori in 1907. The “Montessori Method” addresses the development of the whole child and is rooted in the belief that all children possess an intellectual and creative potential, a drive to learn and the ability to be self-directed.
In both the public school system and accredited private schools teachers with both an Alberta teaching certificate and a teaching certificate from an accredited Montessori teacher training course guide the students in individual and group learning experiences Both the Alberta Programs of Study and the Montessori curriculum are taught. In Calgary, the Calgary Board of Education offers the Montessori Program in three elementary schools and there are three private schools that offer the program to elementary students.

River Valley School is a private school in Calgary that offers an excellent elementary Montessori program for children in Lower Elementary (grades 1 to 3) and Upper Elementary ( grades 4 to 6). It is an CCMA accredited Montessori school with teachers who are both Montessori certified as well as Alberta Education certified. The key principles of a Montessori education are adhered to and children are offered continuity and challenge, independence and leadership. River Valley School is built upon the strong core values of peace, trust, respect, creativity, independence, leadership, confidence, and global citizenship. Specialist teachers offer additional opportunities in music, pysical education, art, french and many extracurricular activities. All teachers are committed to meeting the needs of the diverse needs of the students. While there are many fine public schools in Calgary, River Valley School is a small and very special school. It is worth a look.
Mosaic Montessori Academy in a private school in Calgary that specializes in the Montessori Method. They have a Casa program for children aged 2 1/2 to 6. From all the schools that we visited, Mosaic Montessori was the only school that had teachers that were qualified as well as experienced. The administration has an open door communication policy and parents are encouraged to volunteer as well. I extremely happy with the program.
