For over 30 years, WillowWood School has been providing a safe and nurturing environment for students of all kinds. WillowWood individualizes programs to accommodate a diverse student body with varying learning styles. “We work well with kids with learning differences such as ADHD, giftedness, dyslexia, and Asperger's, as well as kids who’ve been bullied or neglected in larger settings,” says Jeff Clayton, Communications. At this school, everybody knows everybody else. “Bullying is remarkably rare, and addressed immediately, by peers as well as teachers,” says Clayton.
WillowWood embraces individuality and strives to bring out the best in each unique individual. “We all learn differently,” says Principal Fred Howe. “When teachers recognize this and can help students to understand how they learn best, it creates an environment that is truly limitless.” The warm and nurturing environment created at WillowWood allows students to explore themselves while feeling safe, empowered and responsible.
WillowWood's new Foundation Program for Primary students offers individualized program delivery within the core areas of learning. “This enables students to learn at their own level of skill development and independent functioning,” says Clayton. The program includes double the language and math instruction that is typically available in Grade 1 and 2 programs. Social skills development is also included in the curriculum to help students cope with stress, work effectively in teams and treat others with respect; skills that will serve them well into adulthood. The program also includes cognitive skill development in the areas of memory, attention, visual and sensory processing and integration.
