The school community is one made up of devout Catholic families that share many of our values. We have met other like-minded parents and enjoy interacting with them at school or other school events. We parents are actually invited to participate in the life of the school. There are many opportunities throughout the year that allow us to see our kids in action, through performances, parents' days, etc. The school also works with parents to develop the children from an academic standpoint and also a spiritual standpoint. The school will also hold parent retreats to discuss how we can raise our kids up to share in our values and just be good citizens. I appreciate that the focus of the school is not simply in academics but also helping develop the children into good people.
Guiding Light Academy really takes the time to engage parental involvement at the school. At the beginning of each school year there is a parent meeting where all parents can meet, the events for the school year are shared, and then there is always a really informative and forming talk that is given by the Heralds of the Gospel. These meetings have not only served in building relationships with the other parents and getting to know those families that are new to the school but have also helped me grow as a parent who wants to raise happy, resilient and spiritually sound children. The events that are held at the school yearly are also great platforms to get acquainted with the teachers of the students and with the particular parents of the classmates of each child.
Guiding Light Academy provide many opportunities for parents for be involved. Before the beginning of the school year, parents are invited to the Parent Orientation. It’s a time where we can meet new parents as well as mingle with familiar faces. This session also allow parents to see what’s to come for the school year ahead and provide us with important dates so nothing is missed. During the school year, parents/grandparents and family can volunteer and participate in different activities such as Mother’s/Father’s/Grandparent events, Cultural events, Sports events, Fundraisers and concerts. Guiding Light Academy is filled with multi-culturalism and they really embrace the different cultures by hosting events that bring in experience and life from around the world, through costume, food, history and presentations. From the get-go, parents are made to feel welcome and Guiding Light Academy really value and believe in the importance of parent involvement.
If there is a school that feels like a family, where the parents feel welcomed and involved it's Guiding Light Academy. Pre-covid the school and the Heralds of the Gospel organized many fundraisers and events, especially the Christmas gala dinner where parents were invited to help fundraise. The Heralds of the Gospel also held prayer retreats for the parents and families so that we would all be on the same page with regards to the Catholic formation of the children. They school also held events where students would perform and parents were invited to watch. Those were wonderful opportunities where we could get together and catch up. They did annual events honouring Mother's Day, Father's Day and Grandparents' day as well which were very special, and also taught the students to honour their elders. The graduation and awards ceremony at the end of the year was something to look forward to as it featured performances by the children, graduating speeches by the grade eight students, and of course prayers of thanksgiving, and it was held outdoors with a picnic. It really is like being part of a large family!
