March Academy does an outstanding job in providing a wide variety of extracurricular activities for all students. My son loves sports and tends to only want to try sports. At March, he was introduced to taekwando, yoga, choir, piano, and cross country skiing. He might not have chosen to try these activities other wise. Having them integrated in the curriculum, the students were open to trying new things and develop a broad range of interests.
Yes, I definitely feel there are enough extracurricular opportunities offered at March Academy. The kids can choose between soccer and other activities at recess. They keep the kids incredibly active with cross country skiing in the winter and running during the other seasons. Piano is a great addition for the kids and helps with their fine motor skills. They bring in a professional yoga instructor to teach the children once a week as well as a TaeKwon Do black belt to instruct them once a week as well. My son loves the TaeKwon Do so much that he begged us to sign him up for additional classes in the evenings.
One of the reasons why we decided to register our kids at March Academy over the other private schools in Ottawa was because of their extensive extracurricular activities. They offer once a week: Yoga, Tae-Kwon-Do, choir, piano and gym. Physical education is a main focus of March Academy and their big yard offers a great area for running. The are also field trips to the skating rink and park nearby and once a year a ski trip. Our kids do value the learning experience the different extracurricular activities provide. As parents we're extremely happy to see how these activities altogether are helping to develop well rounded and confident kids. Once a year before the holidays kids are given $20 to do something for others and then they report back to the school with a presentation. Once a year, kids gather on a Friday night for a pizza and movie evening, while parents are allowed to have a free evening. Kids are asked to practice piano at home on a daily basis and are part of an annual recital where they show off their singing and musical skills.
The extracurricular activities are included in the daily life of the school. The children have choir, take piano lessons and have Martial Arts. There is yoga and nature walks. In the winter there is cross country skiing and the annual “downhill ski day”!! This year the school put on the singing musical “Oliver”! It was an amazing performance. One of the BEST plays I have ever watched! The dancing and singing were exceptional. During the month of February, everyone looks forward to Chile Bingo Night!! That is probably one of the best highlights for both the student, staff and parents.
There are wonderful activities at March Academy that occur at the school and at times outside of the regular school hours. Last year the students all trained to run in two community runs and parents ran with the students. The teaching of yoga and taekwando during school hours with qualified instructors is very positive for the students. Our son was not a fan of yoga when he started because he found it too "slow", but now we find him doing yoga at home. The philosophy of taekwando is a positive influence on the social fabric of the school. This is not a school that has organized sports teams due to its small size, but physical exercise and health are central to the school's philosophy and the small size allows for a more interesting mix of extracurricular activities to happen within the school hours.
