(4.5) Student Experience
The Teachers and staff are very involved and student focused. They know each of them by name in the hallways and have a rapport with them. I can call the front desk and don't have to explain which child is mine and I rarely call! The teachers, supporting staff and Principle all take the success of their schools personally. You can see if in their interaction with each other and the students. My child enjoys going to school, studying with her classmates, learning new concepts and subjects utilizing a variety of methods (teachers like to mix techniques), and they always feel supported and encouraged to do their best. Bullying, negatively etc. is not tolerated and the students are rewarded for appropriate behavior by the faculty threw awards and peer recognition. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much they cheer and encourage each other to do well including a study buddy system, reading partner with younger/older grades etc.
(4.5) School Leadership
When ever I've made inquiries, suggestions or had any concerns, they were addressed immediately and appropriately by the teachers and staff. As previously noted, they encourage students to be respectful of each other and offer monthly awards in recognition of the students displaying specific traits. Parents are kept aware of any behavioural concerns or recognition through open conversation and/or impromptu meetings.
As previously noted, I like the fact that the students are challenged and also presented with different ways to learn different subjects and topics. Combination of exploration, projects, studying, etc are incorporated into their classrooms which the students really enjoy. Teachers are quite passionate and take the time to learn about their students and how their students are learning the subjects. When students are having a tough time learning new subjects, the teachers often change or adjust how their presenting the work and use tests and quizzes to gauge how the students are adapting to the subject and work. We receive regular report cards (interim) as well as teachers make themselves available for impromptu emails and phone calls or meetings after school depending on our availability. They are aware which students need additional support with specific subjects, suggest practice help etc. to support the learning.
The academic program is very rigourous. Weekly tests: some standard such as spelling but there are also math, social studies, French science etc. starting from Grade 1. There are public speaking, projects and presentations as well. Including competitions with other schools. When compared to the Public schools, it's not even close as far as content and rigor. My child's studying habits are solid as a result and having homework is fairly frequent depending on the topic and time of year.
Yes, chess-club, to cross-country, basket-ball, school play, volley-ball etc. are all offered. The students are definitely well rounded! Although academics are the main focus, the sports offered like Cross-country, computer lab time, field trips and things like skating and swimming lessons as gym alternatives are a great mix for the students to try something new. My child is proud of her school and her peers. I've never heard them disappointed about something at this school (she previously attended Montessori). She will attend another 4 years here and then head to highschool.
Average classroom has maximum 13 students, they all interact and play together, encourage, cheer and help eachother, it's so awesome to see. They use each other as study buddies, give notes of recognition to one another, pleasant surprise when I opened their Friday folder and found notes of gratitude from other students for what my child had done for them.
(4.5) School Life
Yes, my child enjoys enjoying to school. She enjoy's her classmates, how they work together, the interaction with old and new teachers and overall school faculty. The faculty know the students by name and address them in the hallways etc which is a pleasant surprise. It's very reassuring to know that you can call the school and ask the reception about your child without having to explain who they are or how to find them!! Someone is always their to support them! Overall I am very pleased with my choice of school and have recommended it to family and friends!
Parents are very much encouraged to participate, give feedback and participate in the school's event's, decisions, trips etc. My only comment would be that for parents like myself who don't participate in drop-off or pick-up, sometimes I would hope for better advance notice of large events.
(4) School Location
The school is located within a neighborhood but the students stay within the property as it is sectioned off appropriately.
