Winning Championships Through Teamwork

The CHS Varsity Volleyball Team won the AAA Varsity Girls BC Provincial Volleyball Championships for the first time in December 2017. This exciting accomplishment was made at home - with Crofton House hosting the tournament, welcoming 15 teams from throughout the province for this three-day event.

Team captain, Lianne Strother ’18 describes how this was more than just a tournament, “Provincials are not just about the sport, but also about uniting a community where we all share that common interest. Crofton House did a really good job of bringing everyone together. We didn’t just put on a sporting event. It was a community event, starting with the opening banquet, which was really fun for everyone.”

The theme of the tournament was movies and TV series and teams showed incredible spirit dressing up as their favourite movie or TV characters for the opening banquet and performing some fantastic lip- synching musical numbers.

As Gerald Lambert, Senior School Athletics Program Coordinator says “whenever Crofton House hosts a tournament like this, it’s not about the game. The event is really about getting the entire sporting community together to celebrate - the players, the coaches, the spectators. It’s about creating a fun atmosphere and involving everyone from the opening banquet right through to the final game.”

Certainly the CHS community - parents, teachers, students and coaches - all came out to support the team and watch the Crofton Falcons go undefeated in the tournament - never losing a set! Jadyn VanSanten ’19 was named the tournament MVP, while Shea Baker ’19, Sana Arora ’19 and Lianne were all named Tournament All Stars.

Describing the teamwork that made their winning streak possible, Lianne says “we really came together, almost as a family. We had all these posters that we signed that said, ‘We are going be a family and we’re going to work to be champions. A lot of it was about playing for each other, especially, being a senior on the team I felt a lot like the younger girls really worked to help us win in our final year.”
